Nineteen years after the formation of the Empire, Luke Skywalker is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet of Tatooine. Obi-Wan begins Luke's Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue the beautiful Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of the evil Empire. Although Obi-Wan sacrifices himself in a lightsaber duel with Darth Vader, his former apprentice, Luke proves that the Force is with him by destroying the Empire's dreaded Death Star.

Though I disagree with Ben in these star wars reviews, I actually really enjoy him being there because it allows disagreement, discussion and for them to defend certain parts of the movies.

I don’t enjoy Ben- at all. He says the most cliche things possible. “Adult”, “mature” critics like him are only allowed to like Empire because it got four stars back then. Lazy reviewer. What’s the purpose of a re-watch if Ben is parroting the original takes from 1980? We know it was written better Ben- yawn- you suck.

+Joe V Well they really are terrible films. I think the prequels are judged too harshly not because they're not terrible films too, but because the old ones they're compared to are really not as good as people think. Phantom Menace might be a little worse than A New Hope but not by much.

+Zombi Pineapple Dude that's not it at all. Redlettermedia did a 7 part review on why the prequels suck, not just compared to the original trilogy, but as movies on their own. And no nostalgia has nothing to do with it.
@Stabby666
@Stabby666 8 лет назад
+Zombi Pineapple What (mostly younger people) don't get is that the first 3 films blew away everything else at the time with their special effects. These couldn't be done with CGI at the time, as they are now, so audiences were amazed to see stuff flying about in space, lazers etc. Star Wars also finally introduced the idea that spacecraft could be weird shapes and sizes, as there's no need to be aerodynamic in space. Also the idea of light sabres etc, lots of things that other films have subsequently used. These were great films. If you're just looking at them compared to modern technology, over 40 years later, of course they can't compare technically. It's like saying a 69 Dodge Charger sucks because it's less fuel efficient than a Prius.

X-men 2 is better than the first. The Dark Knight is better than the first. Spiderman 2 is better than the first. Terminator 2 is better than the first. Aliens is about as good but in totally different ways. Debateable. The Road Warrior. The Towers is about as good as the first in totally different ways. I think there's an extreme amount of sequels better than the first, and I think if there's competent film-makers, they are more likely to up their ante with the second film. It's when the studio gets involved in the creative force when the sequel is likely to be a money-grabber and it won't even compete with the first: Jaws.

"...In the glory days of science fiction, critics wrote about the "sense of wonder.'' That's what "The Empire Strikes Back'' creates in us. Like a lot of traditional science fiction, it isn't psychologically complex or even very interested in personalities (aside from some obvious character traits). That's because the characters are not themselves--they are us. We are looking out through their eyes, instead of into them, as we would in more serious drama. We are on a quest, on a journey, on a mythological expedition. The story elements in the "Star Wars'' trilogy are as deep and universal as storytelling itself. Watching these movies, we're in a receptive state like that of a child--our eyes and ears are open, we're paying attention, and we are amazed." Roger Ebert , Empire Strikes Back review, 1997

Leigh Brackett's first draft, based on Lucas' story outline. was virtually unusable - as she was dying while writing it. Lucas then rewrote the script from scratch before Kasdan worked his magic. Lucas gave Brackett credit for his draft nonetheless to basically honor her dying wish. This is all documented in How Star Wars Conquered the Universe.

You can actually find the origional Leigh Bracket script online. It's Basically the same, but toned down - there is some crazy stuff in the Bracket script that never made it to film. Oh, and Yoda was named Minch. And all the names of the planets permutated Bracket was also an accomplished Sci-fi novelist.

I actually agree with Ben about wishing we saw more of the actual empire. We only get to see the imperial forces on star destroyers or the Death Star; later we see Emperor Palpatine. But, we never get to see the Empire itself as a thing. We don't see Palpatine making "evil" decisions, the empire enslaving whole colonies or worlds, or them doing anything at all other than hunting for rebels. We just see military actions like blowing up a planet or searching for rebel forces. Inglorious Basterds can get away with us not seeing the Nazi's do anything evil because we all know a bit of history. We know what was happening off screen. So, just showing us Hans Landa, Hitler and few other Nazi's... we get it and can assume what the others are off doing. We know what the government is up to. We have no idea what the Empire is actually doing and it would've been nice to see some of it on screen. IDGAF about novels or comics or games or cartoons.

@detubeme
@detubeme 8 лет назад
+Ragitsu Have you SEEN the prequels? They spend SO much time on trade disputes, Senate hearings, and council meetings. They go to SO many different places for pretty much no reason except to show some different planet that's a part of the galaxy. They show so many different aliens just so you know they exist. I'm just saying, hey... how about you show me the emperor and a general discussing how they've conquered a new system or plan to colonize a new world but have to destroy the indigenous life there first or something? Just let me know what they're up to. Otherwise, the rebels might as well just be terrorists and the jedi were just plotting to overthrow the government: Anakin's point of view. It's pretty simplistic to just say: "they're the bad guys because they're evil!" What if the economy boomed and life got better for everyone in the empire once the Emperor took over? LOL. What if things were awesome for the systems that complied, but then the rebels just kept messing stuff up?

Here's my problem with this movie, and perhaps a Star Wars geek could help me out: after Luke splits up with the rest and goes to the Dagobah system, the story involving Han, Leia et al. seems to take about a couple of days to transpire. Meanwhile, Luke has found the time to almost complete his training under Yoda, and also fly all the way to cloud city to help his friends. It feels like an arc that should have taken months, and is out of sync for me with the other arc. Is there an explanation for this?
@ryanelitz7312
@ryanelitz7312 8 лет назад
It's not the majority the idea is most of his training is before Luke is a Jedi master before return of the Jedi and after empire
@malky2583
@malky2583 8 лет назад
The training yoda was giving him was mainly philosophy preparing him mentally for the challenges ahead, not in practical fighting skills thus could be shown to luke in a short period of time. Many things would come to luke with just the opening of his mind to the force. That was the main issue luke was having do to his advance age at the beginning of training. The trip into the darkside force area is a kin to the trials a jedi is supposed to go through to achieve a higher rank, facing his father was also a trial, so was the battle of yavin4 in a new hope. Rescuing han could also be considered a trial as well, as before the purge that is the sorts of missions padawans might have been sent on with their masters. So by the end of the 3rd movie when vador says your skills are complete he is likely correct that over the last few years, many of which were off screen luke found the knowledge to be worthy of being a knight. His official I guess ceremonial trial is sparing vader's life knowing he might die as a result. He goes from a brat that just wants to get out and see the galaxy to leader willing to sacrifice and be committed to a cause.

It's also the one that was made with the most technical skill. The freezing chamber is flawlessly lit and colored. You have opposing colors on the color wheel for dramatic contrast. That scene would not have been nearly as powerful if the lighting came from any direction other than below. It's just so effective. This movie is one of the many movies of that period that use "technohorror" (not scariness or all out gore, but the sense of rejection or revulsion of the merging of technology and flesh). They really don't do technohoror like this anymore. It's usually too gory (like Jamie Lee Curtis' Leviathon or the Fly). Maybe it's the blending of the fantasy genre with the technohorror that makes this look just right.

You know who else was a female screenwriter in hollywood the first half of the 20th century... Ayn Rand. gasp! Wouldn't to make any comments about Rand and her role of the progress of women in media. nope. that would actually be progressive.

Leigh Brackett was an incredibly famous and important early SFF author. The screenwriting mostly came later and was not SFF. It's wonderful that she got to cross the two streams once. (Although I think that Lucas had Kasdan mostly scrap her work by the final version.)

She wrote the screenplay for the Bogart/Bacall movie that escapes my mind at the moment, but was awesome... The Big Sleep, or no maybe its the other one

+EoghanMcCarthy900 I think it's a collection of historical battles that took place on the North Pole where the soldiers could see the stars crystal clear while fighting under them.

Ben is totally correct. Star Wars is the most overhyped crap. the orig trig is just as bad as the prequels
