You can get the original, non fucked up versions somewhere. It's not legal, but what Lucas did to them shouldn't be, either.

Cory Weston A fan group has done a recompilation of the originals from the best sources available. I found them quite easily. It's not full HD quality, nor even the cleanest material, but it's not that bad, and any original trilogy would be better than the special editions, no matter the video quality.

+( ͠° ͟ʖ ͡°) There's also the DVD limited editon which has the unaltered version on the bonus disc. The format is 4:3 letterbox, but if you cut the picture (with VLC player for example) you got it right. It's abit grainy but ok.

Oh Ben saw the version of Jedi with that horrible clueless Vader scream Lucas put in, which completely ruins probably the best moment in the movie. Where up to that point Luke and Vader had mentioned feeling conflict off the other, but with Vader there's nothing to really go on because you can't see his face. You see Luke reacting to things, his face shows us what's going on with huim. You never really know what's going on with Vader, until that moment when you feel the conflict of save his son or serve his master. The little head movement, the music, Luke crying out in pain in the background, and then..."NOoooooooooooooono..." Fucking George.

They are kind of harsh on Jedi. Tbh, I think it has aged better in most respects than A New Hope. The Jabba sequence is pretty badass, except for Boba Fett's death. The face-off in the Throne Room is one of the greatest scenes in the trilogy, and my all-time favourite scene is the burning of Vader's body. But yes, the Ewoks. I read the Making of ROTJ and in it Lucas' creative deterioration is becoming clear. *Everyone* else hated the Ewoks except for him. In the script discussions, he kept referring to them as "My Ewoks" and was determined to build the story around them, not vice versa. His constant interference on set and stubbornness bit him in the ass too, as he originally wanted Spielberg to direct but couldn't because he had left the Director's Guild, angry over having to pay a fine for not putting credits at the beginning of Empire. Spielberg would have had the muscle to convince him to make some obvious changes for the better.

Vader yelling "no" when he saves Luke at the end, was added in the Blue Ray versions. The scene is far more powerful without that bit of dialogue.

Not to mention that this one in my opinion has the worst added on special addition scenes such as having an annoying silly cgi musical number in jabbas palace where they are literally singing directly at the camera which is kind of breaking the 4th wall as well. Though I will add I personally actually like the song change in the last scene from the ewoks singing to the flute like song because I thought the new song was more emotional.

Empire strikes back had some clashing tones as well. All the drama unfolding in Cloud city was intercut with C3P0 being sloppily put back together and bitching up a storm at Chewbacca for having his head on backwards, or R2 trying to fix the hyperdrive instead of putting his leg back on, funny how easily people seem to forget that.

God, I hate myself for writing this, I'm sure I'm the 80th person to point it out by now, but Boba Fett doesn't actually die in the Sarlacc pit. There's extended universe material - a book I read as a teen - that depicts him as being only partially digested and later escaping, continuing his career as a bounty hunter and holding a serious grudge against Han. I'm sorry, I'm so, so sorry, I'm going to STFU now. I have no idea if extended universe material is relevant or even canonical.

It's been a while since I last saw this, I'm about to go watch it. My opinion has always been that the ewoks are fine, the problem with this movie is Jabba's palace. It's so stupid convoluted and it takes way way way too long before the movie finally puts Jabba to bed. You judge the Ewoks by their cuteness and size, but they're a hunter culture, the forest is their terrain, they've existed there for who knows how many eons. Why is it so implausible. Maybe now I'm in my 30's the cuteness will bug the shit out of me, we will see.

@adronias
@adronias 8 лет назад
+nicodimus2222 There's lots of silly shit in Jabba's palace, but I guess it depends your definition of silly. There's the dude cying over dead rancor, humanoids get Jabba's wick wet, the droid screaming over hot metal, boba bested by bumbling blind bandit. Then there's Luke's plan, that's the silliest shit of all. How does he know that Chewie won't get skinned and turned into a rug on the spot. That the droids won't get melted down for scrap parts. That leia won't get sent off to some space brothel somewhere. He sends all these weak useless characters into a hive of scum and villainy and then he saunters in last with the best part of his plan, weaponless. Come on. It was great we finally got to meet Jabba, but we're in the concluding movie of a trilogy and we get 40 minutes on a subplot irrelevant to the story the series is telling. Nuts. Jabba's palace is just Lucas redressing the bar scene in SW where he didn't get to show us how creative he is with all the magical looking aliens he can create. yawn.

Boba Fett was a nobody! He was never anything but an interesting costume design. If by mystique you mean he had almost no screen time or dialog, then yea, I guess he had mystique. Just like that guy who was commanding the walker in the battle at Hoth. Most people don't remember him, because he didn't have a cool costume. I have to say, I think you guys are totally off point. The Ewoks are not nearly as bad as people make then out to be.

Good banter during dangerous situations is literally one of the best and most entertaining things that a movie could use, it's one of those things that Hollywood movies doesn't do very well at all anymore and I miss it. Now it seems like EVERY story has to have a dark dramatic tone to be taken seriously and there is no wiggle room for anything else from a critical point of view and that's completely wrong imho. Besides weren't everyone gushing over The Martian and how good Matt Damon's performance was? He was literally joking his way through death-defying situations and that didn't take away from the gravity of his struggle, so why should Han Solo's dialogue be a problem? Critical double standards like these is why it's so hard to know what people want these days because even they don't know.

I know the ewoks were cheesy to many, but I love RotJ. I acknowledge that Empire is the better of the two films, but I was a kid when I first saw this and it was a "good guys win" feel good movie that I loved. The action was great and the underdog ewoks giving the rebels the chance to succeed was great to my adolescent mind. Return of the Jedi will always be my favorite in my heart even as I know in my mind that Empire Strikes Back is a superior film.

Good god what a one sided review. If three of their scores are positive why exactly are they positive? I don't know because all they did was bitch about everything they disliked. It's a very flawed film but it's still my all-time favorite film mostly for one specific reason which is the elephant in the room here...THE SPACE BATTLE! In terms of sheer exhilaration that battle has still not been surpassed ("Return of the King" came the closest), an overwhelming amount hard work and artistry went into the creation of that battle and it's the job of serious film critics (whom these people pretend to be) to point that out in their review.

Should have replaced the Ewoks with the Wookies. That would have been a battle, I guess Lucas sort of redeemed that portion in Revenge of the Shit. Lol. But aside from the lame way Boba dies, the overly long Jabba sequence, and lame Ewoks I found that Vader softening up and his conflict with Luke to be interesting. As well as Luke's maturity and how evil the Emperor is.

I do enjoy Return of the Jedi, as there is a lot to love about it. But man there's a lot not to like as well. The rehash of the climax of the first movie, the awkward shift in tone from what Empire established, EWOKS...this movie was most certainly the weakest of the originals. The stuff involving Luke and Vader was compelling, but it's undercut by so much silliness.

Jedi gets too much flack, here and the internet in general. Its not as good as 4/5, but the gap between 4/5 and 6 in quality isn't as large as people think. 4 and 5 are like 9.5/10, Jedi a solid 8 to 8.5ish

I didn't like star wars until I was around 14 and they were being re-released in the theater. When I was little (around 3 to 6)I couldn't stand the films. I hated Jabba, the Jawas, the Ewoks, and I really fucking hated Chewbacca. I didn't understand what was going on and I didn't want to. I was raised Catholic early on and when I would hear "May the force be with you," I immediately associated it with church. Right now though, I don't really have a problem with Ewoks and I think it makes a lot of sense to include them. Because they were so small and primitive the Empire didn't see them as a threat and that is what allowed them to defeat the Empire. It is kind of like how they didn't see individual fighters as a threat to the original death star.

Return of the Jedi doesn't get the credit it deserves in my opinion. The whole Jabba section (aside from the shitty special edition additions) is incredible. It has easily the best space battle, the lightsaber duel at the end is my personal favorite. The emotion and operatic nature of it is amazing and just all the other action scenes are awesome. It's my 2nd favorite behind A New Hope. Empire is a better movie overall than Return of the Jedi, but I prefer slightly more.

This is definitely the worst one of the series, the plot was too similar to episode 4, they should not have had done another death star destruction story line. Also the Ewoks ruin this movie, Endor could have been a really good story line, the main characters were going there to sneak into an Imperial base and sabotage some shit, but then they spent half the fucking movie with these stupid fucking teddy bears which can somehow defeat armored imperial troops and vehicles with rocks, bows and arrows, and logs, it made no sense and ruined the tone of the movie. Also they're right, Boba Fett went out like a bitch, why even have this mysterious badass character if you don't do anything with him? Ben is also right about the force lightning thing, the emperor was shocking Luke for a long time, how fucking weak is that power if it not only couldn't kill him in that time, but not even seriously injure him?

I wish they would've made the battle on the planet a lot less storybook. Deactivate the barrier, but the cost in lives was so high that the rebels are almost wiped out. Pumps up the importance of the big climactic battle, doesn't necessarily break tone as badly as "cutesy bear-crafted home-alone traps defeat scary empire" does.

I think the Ewokes are adorable. Return Of The Jedi is the best Star Wars movie Imo

Oh I can't wait until they review the prequels. Hopefully they can schedule it so that Ben is there.

This is the only Star Wars movie I like. The first two did nothing for me, but this one at least had midgets in little bear suits :)

Well I made a comment on 'The Empire Strikes Back' movie review video that Ben would probably give the prequels 3's out of 10 and now that he gave 'Return of the Jedi' a pathetic 5 out of 10, I'm starting to think that's very likely going to happen lmao

+Joe V I'll take the prequels over Return of the Jedi. Jedi is the worst of all the Star Wars movies.
@CarSVernon

movieman82us only someone who is hung up on Han Solo and his minimal role in it can say something like that. It's Luke's journey-- not Han's-- and it resolves itself wonderfully in Jedi.

+movieman82us I think Empire is the worst of the original trilogy. The only bad thing about Jedi is the Ewoks.

+Joe V To be fair the whole of the middle act is boring and noting actually happens.

1:36 "This is where you start to see the cracks." Yes!! That's when GL lost his magic! Temple of Doom is the same. Gone completely with Howard the Duck. Back briefly in Lost Crusade (perhaps more Spielberg there?). GL should have had other directors do the prequels.
@sidhartheleswarapu

Temple of Doom was good. And he didn't make Howard the Duck. Gloria Katz was the writer and William Huyck was the director.

The Stuff with Luke and Vader is very powerful. Vader turning against his master to save his son is one of the best moments in cinema. The whole light saber fight is emotional and strong.

luke's saber was blue? had no idea... the special editions really change a lot of random shit.
@TKDLION
@TKDLION 8 лет назад
+carlos orlando It wasn't a special edition change. Luke's lightsaber was originally blue but was changed to green before the movie was ever released. The reason was that green showed up better on film.
@UTU49
@UTU49 8 лет назад
+TKDLION I believe that the main reason they changed it to green was because they were doing external shooting for the first time with a lightsaber, and they needed some contrast between the lightsaber and the sky.

They are so unaware of how their middle age synicism affects their critical eye of everything. They should mix the cast with younger critics that don't have a mid life crisis and a pessimistic view on almost everything they review.

Love the beginning of Jedi and the end. It's the middle part that suffers. The Ewoks wear out their welcome and Solo is given nothing to do.
