Thanks for watching, liking and subscribing! Sadly with how big the game is I couldn’t get around to a full review but hopefully this gives you a decent little picture of what to expect. Thanks to SwitchUp as well, helping me get in touch with the team for this one!
I feel old scrolling through these comments. Everyone saying they played it as a kid or never at all. I was in my late 20s when this came out. It was the single best Star Wars experience I ever had.
I remember being a wee kid and reading about this game on PC gaming magazines. It was everything I've ever wanted and more, I would dream of owning it one day! Oh, the memories!
I'm suprised nobody mentioned this but the enemie's (and all npc's) sounds dont work in combat. Usually there are battle cries or your companions make some in-combat dialogue but there is nothing. I hope this gets more attention and Aspyr gets it fixed!
I noticed that. To be fair, they did get annoying when I played it on the Xbox version. The Droid sounds are also bugged when they get hurt or destroyed.
It's kinda good that they didn't release them both at the same time. You know the cartridge would only have one game with a download code for the other. This way people who prefer physical media can get both games on cart, if they even remaster the second for switch anyway.
I’ve had this on my radar ever since it was announced, and I’ve been looking forward to it ever since. I’ve played the game both on PC and iOS, though I’ve never completed it. This review gives me a little pause, though I may bite the bullet regardless. It’s good to know its idiosyncrasies in advance. Thanks for your review!
@@SwitchCorner perhaps you can drum into them why it is important to upload a 60 fps video of a 60 fps game. idiots. this channel rocks though :) although you could've chosen a better word than resolution.
Still one of my absolute favorite RPGs to this day. Played it a ton on my cousin's Xbox when I was a kid back in the day, and fell in love with it, especially with it being Star Wars; really opened my mind to all the expanded universe stories and "what ifs" rather than just limiting my imagination to the movies. Bought it on Android for my phone a couple years ago too. Glad to see that it plays well and seems like a good port. Will definitely be picking it up, am hoping for a physical cartridge from Limited Run or some similar company
I feel like I want a whole ass UI re-do for KOTOR, as much as I enjoyed it at the time, everytime I go back to relive the memories I tap out when I have to deal with the UI
Also trying to shoot the sith fighters on the phone version is dang near impossible at first and is nearly the hardest thing I've ever done in a game lol, if anyone has played it on their phone they should understand how frustrating this can be, at least until you get used to it and how the ai moves and acts
I understand and agree 💯. I have Kotor on my phone and was happy to see that Aspyr finally got around to porting the second one. Here's hoping sales do really well for the Switch, so that they can port the second one to the Switch as well. Also, I hope the turret sequences are smoother and easier to control.
Friendly reminder: get your main character's lvl as low as possible until you reach datooine to have more skill room for force powers since your max lvl is at 20.
I was a teenager when the first Kotor came out. I played it on the PC, I've played it on the Xbox, I even own it for my Android. I have to say though this Switch version looks the cleanest by far! You can bet your asses, I'm getting it for the Switch as well, today.
Great review as usual but I was wondering something. I know you're not digital foundry but would you be able to show handheld for even 5-10 seconds of a video for those of us with the lite? So many switch games look good docked & they seem ok in handheld unless it's your only way to play, then the graphic downgrades are really noticeable. Idk if that would be way too much extra work but it would be helpful.
One of the best RPGs I've ever played! I had it preordered as soon as I could. I agree that the text box could be a little smaller (never though I'd say that about a Switch game) and it would be nice to see it locked at 60fps considering it's age. That being said, I can deal with these minor quibbles in order to be able to dive back into this world and experience the Old Republic again. Hopefully it sells well enough for #2 to get ported as well.
I was pretty much an adult when this came out. I love it, I have it on my still-working xbox. I’m really happy with the switch version and it’s nice being able to move around the house playing without having to lock myself in my room.
When I played this game I was so confused on what to do I’ve never played a game where so much freedom existed. But I knew I liked it. I want to get a copy really bad
COMBAT MODE ENGAGED! Boi...this box is HUGE :( Some of the upscaled textures have too much sharpness and look out of place, but otherwise - good to have that on Switch and it turned out better than...GTA... Hope they patch the combat box and maybe also implement a....30fps cap. Rather have steady and locked 30, than this up and down. Would also be better for battery life in Hand Held Mode.
How did you not expect an inconsistent frame rate? Have you played the other Star Wars ports Aspyr has done for the switch? They all suffer from low frame rate. This is exactly what I've come to expect from them. They cant get it right. It gives me little hope for the remake.
@@ryankayello so i just checked their twitter, and the said the text box is an intended feature but they said they would pass on the feedback to their dev team. So hopefully we can give them enough constructive criticism that they decide to fix it.
I’m pretty sure the majority of videos will be commenting on it lol so hopefully they do something! I’d be so much happier without it. I can handle a few minor frame drops given the style of the game
@@SwitchCorner yeah honestly it’s the only thing keeping me from buying it, personally i don’t notice frame rate drops during combat in games but that box looks painful to deal with.
I think the phone version is better. They actually messed up a decent deal of the graphics with this one by upscaling assets that were never meant to be upscaled to the resolution they make it. So, the phone has more consistent graphics, which are very good. I wouldn't bother with such a poor port, if it wasn't f'n KotOR.
I’ve never played this…kinda intrigued. But I’ve never been a Star Wars fan, but I do love me some rpg goodness. Might check it out to give it the respect it deserves. I wish I didn’t miss this back in the day. Maybe after SMT V.
Might have to pick this up, i played it on XBOX back in the day, and have it on Steam, but there is no controller support there, which is a shame. So having this new Switch version would be ideal.
@@kevinschmidt8101 when I get home this evening I'll gladly check it out. Or if you'd rather have a quicker answer you can always do some internet research.
I preordered it and stayed up late as hell plotting outbmy character. I played this as a kid over a friends house so I never beat it. I have been loving every second and hope they bring the second one over
The Switch port also has a returning glitch that allows you to duplicate armor and weapons which can be handy in getting credits, simple use a consumable like shield or stim but pause the game before the animation can finish make sure you have at least 2 characters click an item you want to copy equip it and you'll know if it worked when the equipped weapon doesn't appear equipped then move to another character giving them the same item you where equipping then it will appear on that character. get out the menu then pause again all you need to do is save and reload that save file might seem tricky to some so look up videos but it's pretty useful when getting some good items early on cause who wants to play mini games to get the credits
@@GacMan47 I've done this glitch plenty times it doesn't effect your game it just duplicates armors or weapons good for getting credits during the early stage of the game
Sometimes I wonder if people actually understand how certain games are meant to be played. Like I've only played 2 games in my life that made me change how I played them which instantly made me WAY better at the game and understand a lot more about the game and the first one was Dark Souls years ago and the other was KotOR1 this year. I (for KotOR) basically tried to play in real time for the longest time and then eventually realized that you're supposed to pause for every action (if you need to) which instantly made the game a lot easier for me and made me understand a lot more about the game mechanics. I just get the sense sometimes that some people that make vids about these games don't understand these things.
Just because you didn’t like real time doesn’t mean it isn’t the right way though so I don’t agree. I played this game back when it released with a whole lot of pausing, however, in the options you can turn off the pause, it’s designed to be harder on the player. Saying it’s wrong though when the creators included the option in both the gameplay on the fly and in the menu is off the mark. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t make it wrong.
@@SwitchCorner I didn't say it's wrong bc I don't like it, I didn't even say I didn't like it. I was just trying to point out that the way the game is structured it makes it a lot easier (and technically dnd is turn based so yeah that'd mean it's kinda made to be optimized that way) but that doesn't mean you can't play it however you want. When you get better and faster you don't need to pause as much or at all but you are severely disadvantaged if you do not pause and do not know what you are doing and that's a fact not an opinion.
I just checked the eshop and the game is 12.49€. For that money I may buy cause I never played it. But I have a feeling it will need a patch or two until it runs smoothly.
I'm a massive star wars fan and have tried to get into Kotor so many time but never could! Still gona buy it in switch, sure it's only £11 so might as well!
If you're talking about the game in general, no. KorOR holds up to this day, if you enjoy tactical RPGs. If you're talking about this port, IDK, 🤷♀️. The phone version is *REALLY* good, has low system requirements, and is $5 cheaper, but it has conflicts with some devices. I'd look up if there are any issues with your current device on record first, but that's pretty uncommon. I use a samsing galaxy 7, and it ran like an f'n charm! Both of these are mobile, but your phone's store may have a return policy if you either you or your phone hate it. KotOR usually gets stellar reviews from people, but some aren't interested in the heavy dialogue, plot, and RPG tactical slow burn gameplay.
I was 7 when this came out. I played it a lot and got quite far but couldn't find out what I was supposed to do late in the game. I always wanted to come back to it but I don't have an Xbox anymore, and the steam version has problems. The aspect ratio is messed up, I had to find a fix for it, and the mouse and keyboard controls are horrible. The switch port is literally perfect. It looks really good in handheld and remains as fun as I remembered, and it's been a long long time. The dialoge has aged percectly... the character interactions are well acted and the game does emotions very well... facial animations hadn't progressed much at this point but with Witty word choice and good acting the characters display sorrow, anger, tension and levity quite well. They're also really funny sometimes! The story is so well fleshed out. I never really cared for Fallout or Skyrim storylines, and I'm not even a big fan of star wars. Something about this game though, it's so grungy and gritty. 10/10
If they even release a remaster of II, I seriously doubt Limited Run would release a double pack. There’s more than enough demand for individual physical releases of both, and the original is already out on Limited Run as of today as a single release.
I played it a long time ago on a device far away (my Kindle Fire,) and I was not a fan. The only Star Wars game I've actually enjoyed is the Lego games, and Jedi Power Battles. The Force Unleashed would have been good, but the corniness of the cut scenes bogged it down. Lego made it funny, and they combined all the movies.
Have you ever played Jedi Academy? It's on the Switch for like 10 bucks, and like $5 on sale. The force powers are good, and three are the best ever done in a game: Force Lightning, Force Grip, and Lightsaber Throw. You'll need the third rank of the spells for the first two to see them in their glory, but lightsaber throw is immensely satisfying even in it's most basic form. Force Grip though is *OUTSTANDING* on the switch, because of motion controls. It's basically just force choke, but you can move around the enemies with a wave of your hand; this makes it so you can slam enemies into walls or the floor to snap their necks, you can slam them into their allies to knock around entire hordes, and you can even pitch mother fuckers insanely far to snipe with guys, once you get the hang of it. Also, last but not least, the lightsaber combat is one of the three best melee combat systems ever made! (Hellish Quartz, Bushido Blade, and Jedi Academy) It also has an online multiplayer mode. The story is so average that I consider it bad though. It gives you the chance to go evil or good though.
I have one simple question. Can you stack commands? Every video i have seen has the character select one command at a time. In addition to story, KOTOR was known for stacking commands which offered more strategy. Has this been removed or is it still there?
If it wasn't removed it should be the "Y" button. Mmy guess is that these guys are just pressing the "B" Button which erases your previous queue to replace it with a new command. The xbox version did the same, and I'm estimating this based of the x/y axis button layout. The xbox version was the "A" and "X" buttons respectively
Been loving it even though I’ve beaten it over 25 times across Xbox, pc and iPhone. Still fun and I still buy it on new consoles haha. Can’t wait for the remake too.
Honestly, the framerate is comparable to the Xbox One X version and possibly the Series X version. It just hasn't been properly optimized for modern consoles. Besides a few bugs and whatnot, I don't expect much future updates, since I'm sure they want to focus on the remake more.
It actually looks like the phone version is superior. That's extremely disappointing, and if I didn't love the series so much, I wouldn't even consider getting this game on the Switch. Phone memory is harder to come by though, and KotOR 2 isn't on Switch yet.
I’ve already bought this game a couple times. What are the advantages over playing this bc on Xbox Series X? Full screen and handheld mode? Irrc, it runs at 1920p and maybe 60 FPS on Series X. Going to pick up the Switch port for price, but wondering which to play this weekend.
I’m still wondering the same myself… I can’t help but guess the Xbox version at 1920p will be better and probably less buggy (though the original was still plenty buggy).
you still can, people just dont read tutorial texts that say you haev to perss X for it instead of A(A replaces your Que with a single input of your currently selected option)
KOTOR is my favorite game of all time. I have tons of ways to play it including original XBox and mobile phone. So even though I’m tempted to buy it again and to support the making of these games, I can’t honestly find a reason to play/pay again, since my last play through was about 2 years ago. If they ported both games and did a combo pack I most likely would have bought it.
Mmy most recent playthrough was about half a year ago, but I'm totally going to pick this up and complete it again! I love the combat system, and optimizing builds is a lot of fun. I've also wanted to try a no leveling run on difficult mode. I've managed to defeat Taris without leveling, and I'm eager to see just how far I can go, 😁👍
Hopefully frame rate can be fixed with some tweaks and a patch, otherwise they should have just locked it to 30, for some reason switch games at 30 don't feel that bad
i dont get why people scream for a Framerate cap at 30.... it dosnt hit 60 all the itme.. yes, but the framerate it does hold, it holds consistent within the map. its not a sudden dip in framerate within a single map, but framerate changes between different areas alltogether, with great frametimes making it better then just having a 30fps cap
@@SwitchCorner well they obviously lied then because I just tried to get into it and it flat refuses to allow me to play it because it says it's not available yet
Really disappointed with the frame rate issues; thanks for pointing this out. I know it's not imperative for this game but like you said, it's 20 years old! 30fps locked would have made more sense surely.
That could just be some game engine issues. Aspyr may not have thought about the limitations of the game's allocated processing power. It's something you have to pay attention to if you want to go crazy with mods. Some small places in the reg game caused minor hiccups, so this could just be that; or sloppy work may have exasperated the problem. Still better then the steam version though, unless you mod like crazy, 😉
@@thesurvivorssanctuary6561 I don't know much about coding, mods etc. but I was hoping that Aspyr would have learned enough about porting to the Switch to optimise this better. That being said, if it's better than the Steam version then I'll probably pick it up and finally play through it. :)
@@usaliengames9810 tbf... given how consistent teh frame times and the overall Frame RATES are per area(the changes in framerate are mostly depending on the map instead of what your actualy looking at, with the engine related slowdowns during certain particle effects being obviously ignored) i honestly prefeer the "uncapped"(well 60 FPS cap but you know what i mean) aproach as it still feels better to play it at a consistent frames per map with great frametimes (like, its amusing how the frame rate barely changes within a given map. but how widely it changes between maps=
@@usaliengames9810 tbh i don’t see how this is better than the steam version? Even without mods the game works at 60+fps while looking better imo, & mods can make it look even better while adding in a few things.
@@jeremiahfelipe8008 I was replying to @The Survivor's Sanctuary as they had stated it was better than the Steam Version. I don't have the Switch version so I don't actually know which one is better.
I think it's fine in a game like this honestly, for me it's platformers and first person where you really feel it. Can cope in anything RPG typically. The only real issue I have with this port is the huge text box in combat, they need to chill out on that and dial it back
@@playmoreindies9638 their ports are considerd very barebones and have often problems in terms of framepacing or framerate...(aka not holding 60 or having inconsistent frametimes(i find the frametimes worse then not holding 60 tbf)) The games work(mostly, i have a strange tendency to crash in aspyr ports if i play the games for several HOURS at a time) but arent as good as People wish they would be. The Ports i played form them for the switch(which are republic commando, jedi knight and jedi outcast and KOTOR) all run "good enough" but you cant deny that they could have done more But then again, they said they are straight up ports, not remasters soooooo
No advanced copies for GTA, that’s a huge game to face so unsure on what the coverage will be this far. The team with KOTOR were good enough to send advanced copies
"noone cares about one of the most acclaimed star wars Games of all times and its new port to a new system that maybe finaly make the game playable in a modern fashion on an actual Screen instaed of a phone without haivng to fiddle with mods, ini files or a plethara of bullshit to get the game running on PC to start with" yes youa re TOTALY right that noone cares about Fucking KOTOR of all things... heck i dont LIKE kotor and evne i dont pretend that "noone cares"
never played it before, so its a good switch port besides some fps drops to 40-ish which isn't bad for me SOLD downloading it now, thanks man cheers stellar review
