Because Maul wasn't the main villain. He was an expendable tool and Darth Sidious' puppet. Very much like Boba Fett, who had a total of 5 lines across the entire trilogy.

DeltaJugg Nope. Still disappointing. He was the main villain of The Phantom Menace. If not, he wouldn’t be the final climactic battle. Unless it’s a bad movie, your heroes at least confront the big bad in some way. Even if you still don’t consider him the big bad of TPM (cause that’s pretty subjective, I’ll give you that) it’s still not good to give your “final boss” if you would, exactly 0 characterization. Being a silent assassin only excuses him not talking to the heroes, not him literally never talking. Even if it’s not explicitly dialogue, there are other ways to characterize him. TPM was just....bad. Unfortunately. At least they fixed him for the clone wars (also goes against the Solent assassin idea, because, yknow, he won’t shut the fuck up in that show).

@@bleachedraptor131 Maul may have been the "final boss", but he was the kind of character that is simply there to serve as an obstacle and not a main villain with complex character arc and deep motivations. Just something to fight in the first chapter of a larger story where the main villain is yet to be revealed or is still being built up. Star Wars Maul was Fellowship of the Ring's Lurtz. Besides, not every villain has to be talkative to be well defined. Maul was for the most part presented the same way Sidious was in TPM, by being this ominous and mysterious character to clearly showcase that he is evil, but to not fully betray their intentions or going on a deep rant how his childhood traumas made him who he is or whatever else. Should he talk to himself or some randos on Tattooine while searching for Qui-Gon, or should he express himself verbally during the Duel of the Fates, it would ruin his whole silent demeanor he was portrayed as. It was meant to be an incentive to kickstart interest in the evil side of the story, and I repeat, that was the whole point, and that's why he was expendable. He was a narrative tool to push the story forward, not a multi-layered character you were meant to get attached to. But he was also showcased as a villain specifically during his fighting encounters with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan. Not only is his appearance very devilish and menacing, not only did he show contempt both in his lines, few as they are, and facial expressions during the fight; he was also a determined and capable fighter, being able to tackle two jedi at once. His whole purpose was to be an intimidating obstacle, and his entire characterization was revolving around that idea. And he also has shown too much confidence and pride, which was his downfall at the end. For as minor a role he was meant to play, and as little characterization as you say he's had, he still had more character in him than, for example, T-1000 in Terminator or the Night King in Game of Thrones. But it doesn't make a character inherently bad, they're just supposed to serve a different purpose than a relatable villain the likes of Darth Vader, Grima or Saruman. Most importantly, Maul's contribution was very miniscule to the scope of the entire movie, as compared to the character of T-1000, who has had the entire movie for himself, and each action scene with him as the focus. Maul has only had the final duel and a minor encounter on Tattooine, but he had to split his action screentime with Sebulba, Nute Gunray, the entire CIS robot army + the aquatic fauna of Naboo. Because again, Maul was a minor villain, a minor character, mostly serving as a narrative tool, an expendable obstacle to push the story forward. The fact that he had as few lines as he did is not "sad", it's just intended for a character whose contribution is meant to be as minor as it was. But at the very least Maul has presented himself as a threatening duelist, whereas if you compare him to a character of comparable importance, Boba Fett, who was just walking, looking menacingly and said about as many lines as Maul throughout three separate movies, only to then fall off a plank and get eaten by a desert flower, then Maul simply looks much better in comparison as a character, because his purpose was at the very least justified in the end and contribution to the movie was at least somewhat impactful for a minor character. Boba Fett is just a hyped up disappointment throughout the whole series.

DeltaJugg I’m not denying your stance on Boba. What you say on him is true. However, Maul has little presence in the movie. I mentioned you don’t need a lot of actual dialogue to get a good villain (and he is, still, the villain of this movie) but we don’t get that stuff with Maul. A lot of what you said is stuff we get after the fact or projection. Maul’s facial expressions aren’t that deep. The fact that he can’t fight two jedi isn’t that impressive given the rest of the series villains (Dooku, Vader, The Emperor, etc). Not going to comment on the Night King because I don’t know GOT, but the T-1000 is a much more interesting villain. He does speak a lot in that movie (compared to Maul anyway) and we DO get characterization of him. Cunning, unrelenting, intelligent. Maul, we get the idea that he’s at least a competent fight from tatooine, and that’s it. Then we get the final confrontation. He has things that make him stand out in the “meta sense”, the fans view point (his double saber, his red and black design, so on) but that’s not his character. His character is actual somewhat difficult to call poor because he has so little to it. He’s the prequel Boba is Boba had a cool fight scene at the end of ESB. (Or beginning of ROTJ. You get the idea). Maul May have been a minor villain in the long run of the saga, but that’s not the perspective I’m taking here. I’m talking from the scale of the phantom menace when examining him (since that’s all he showed up in). And he is, ultimately, the big bad of that movie. Sure he gets ordered, but, to use a previous example, Skynet isn’t really the villain in T2, the T-1000 is. Same way that the Emperor isn’t the villain in this one, he’s just giving the main villain his orders. The Lurtz comparison isn’t entirely apt either since the movie doesn’t build him up. The bigger threat in that movie is closer to the Nazgul (though they don’t show up at the end). Lurtz isn’t the advertised villain essentially. He only shows up for the final fight, whereas Maul is presented through out the movie, just not in a good way. I respect your opinion on the character, you’ve made some good points but I just have to disagree. To me in the frame of the movie, Maul is a let down. I mean, in hindsight most Star Wars villains other Kylo Ren and Vader are let downs anyways, but Maul’s kind of the primary example. But I digress.

Yeah, In the commentary included in a later release of the trilogy, they even explained they wouldn't have killed him off like that if they knew he'd get so popular. But that's where we have the extended universe for, as long as Disney doesn't deny it.

There's also, I don't know, 30 years of lore, 800 books, 80 video games, 1300 books, music, languages, everything all wrapped up into this universe from so many different writers and artists all working into this one universe. Karen Traviss's work on the Mandalorians... holy shit. Sure some of those aren't canon in the EU either but still that's only so that its better connected, it was so amazingly well made and connected and spread out its just... ugh... its bullshit frankly. Yeah, every single EU fan I've talked to does not accept that, and every single person who complains about the EU I've talked to clearly has no idea about the EU because they bring up things that aren't part of it like "a mountain that cries" or "the Battle of Hoth happening twice" because they aren't in there. Dark Horse is a far far better comic maker than Marvel as well, just compare their Star Wars series's comic art from a couple years back to that of Marvel's Star Wars series. How about the complete and utter failure to carry over anything from Mandalorian culture. I can go on and on about what I hate about that. There are so many things that are completely ruined in this transition.

Yes, Please that’s a goal, not motivation. His end point is getting his revenge on the Jedi. It’s never revealed WHY he wants to get there. I guess you could view it as his motivation but that’s not really how I see it

I think it's still motivation if it isn't explained, we can just assume. We don't know why Palpatine wants to rule the galaxy, we can assume he's just power hungry. We don't know why Maul wants revenge but we can assume the Jedi wiped out the Sith a millennia earlier from context clues.
