A Y-wing with the engine layout of the Star Trek Niagra Class might be interesting - but it would likely make it unable to operate accept from drop racks then. On the plus side it would still be Y shaped but now in another dimension.

@@jheref Well it's a bit of conceit really ; They did tinker with the idea that the letter stood from something like B-wing was "Blade Wing" as it looks like a dagger in cross section. But the real answer is yes you are correct it doesn't make a lick of sense.

Indeed! Though I think the wings connecting the engine/weapon pods to the central hull could've been made thicker, that would've allowed for extra reinforcement and added free space for either redundant systems or perhaps even modular bays for quickly adding or switching out mission specific equipment (shields, sensors, ECM/ECCM, bombs or missiles, equipment storage, etc, etc).

All that space between the pylons could be used for cargo space. Strip it down in other ways it would basically be a shuttle.

Thanks for featuring my ship yet again! I'd love to see more of the obscure starfighters since I'm pretty sure I don't know even 10% of them. It would be really nice if you could introduce people to more ships from videogames, especially Rogue Squadron and TIE Fighter series. I still have tons of ships from them that I want to do.

Some scanner equipment (possibly for the RA's search for new bases after Yavin) at the protrusions at the front would make more sense than some slow-firing heavy laser cannons.

So Chewie fitted into a snubfighter? Even if it's designed for 2 crewmembers what'd they do, rip out the front seat and have him steer from the back? BTW Han Solo At Starts End, Han suggest that Chewie could pilot a Headhunter (they needed pilots to protect against a raid while the Falcon was in the middle of disassembly) and the mechanic suggested that she could build a cupola on top of the canopy and he could operate the controls with his knees - Han saw the wisdom of her comment and dropped the idea. The Rebels, since they used Aliens, could have built (or modified) ships with much smaller cockpits to take advantage of any small pilots they had. Freeing up space for other components or fitting a 2 man crew in the space of a 1 human cockpit.

Maybe the pilot can switch between a rapid fire or heavy blaster mode with the guns? it could make up for the lack of torpedoes with a big-target busting heavy blaster shot but still be able to deal with tie-swarms with the ability to spray bolts from a rapid fire mode, and that kind of versatility and multi-role functionality is part and parcel with Rebellion doctrine! Considering that I have a bias against the Y-Wing but a love for uglies, this might be my favourite fighter in Star Wars now.

Can't be double the lenght of a Y-wing. Look at the proportions of the cockpit and engines to the rest of the ship and you get max the same length as the Y-wing.

Now angle the pylons down and put another set on top with either concussion or proton missiles and lengthen the bottom set by a third or so. Forgo the extra sensor & communications suits as well as the ungraded hyperdrive and middle bottom engine for more power to feed into weapons, swap the laser cannons out for some smaller capital grade turbolasers with the extra space and power generation. Was thinking some sorta heavy interceptor or maybe even light destroyer(not star destroyer but the actual kind) made of salvaged bits like this is. Bigger and slower but with enough firepower to make them a threat to larger vessels on it's own or pose a serious threat in small groups but still fast enough to evade fire and get away.

If I had to guess, I'd say that it probably _isn't_ faster. Instead, I'd guess it has better fuel efficiency, and so can stay out longer.

Unsurprised the New Republic didn't keep these as scouts. Wouldn't it's increased size mean you could pack more sensors into it than an A-Wing and it's heavier weapons could also make it a good heavy interceptor. I think the N.W and G.E suffered the same problems of having good tech but poorly utilising it, especially when entrusting a scouting role to a shop that is harder to fly like the A-Wing meaning you not only drop the scout force strength by no longer using the M-Wing but decreasing it further by having a smaller pool of pilots who can fly the A-Wing.
