i hope that blonde kid who left his mama and is expected to bring balance to the force never falls to the dark side due to anger issues and some manipulative old man.
Will never forget downloading the original trailer on dial up, all day long, and then watching endlessly. This was the start of an entire new generation of kids that these movies were specifically made for.
I was 6 years old in 99' My Grandad died that year who was my best friend at the time. My Mum and Auntie took me to see this film called star wars. Had no real idea what it was about.... My Mum said it was a way for me to deal with the trauma of losing my grandad. My life changed for ever.... My love and excitement for star wars has never left me since being a young boy. I'm now 31 with a daughter whom I want to share these moments with. This film will always be a special film for me. ❤️
I was 36 years old when this trailer came out, and I watched it over and over again, tears streaming down my face, thinking I would never see another Star Wars movie, and here it was. I could not wait to see it. Continuing a tradition I started with Empire Strikes Back, I got tickets for the midnight showing at Destiny USA in Syracuse NY (then Carousel Center) and loved every minute of the movie. 25 years ago, hard to believe!
Same here, and when the next theatrical Star Wars movie (The Mandalorian & Grogu) comes out in 2026 my age will be the same numbers...just not in the order I would prefer. ;-)
What's wild is that when this movie came out I was 19 and it was closer to the release of the original star wars (22 years) than the distance between now and this movie (25 years). Time flies by.
Pod racing is still awesome to witness, even after two and a half decades! Also the light saber duel between Darth Maul, Qui Gon Jin and Obi Wan Kenobi with John Williams' "Duel of the Fates" theme playing is still an epic experience!
@@SuperDeathStudiostrue imax is an experience. The screen kind of surrounds you, and it's more than just sound and visual quality increase. The one at my theater is just a bigger normal screen with visual quality increase and then better sound.
I remember downloading this over 14.4kbps in 1998; learning what "Quicktime" was, and how to get such a "high fidelity" form of video to play back on Windows 95. Amazing work, @Star Wars. You successfully accessed core memories within me!
When this film first came out, I was a mountaineering instructor at an outdoor centre. I booked the day off for the movie, six months in advance and then saw it in a cinema that had a screen that was only just bigger than the TV I own these days. I thoroughly loved it then and now, when I saw it on a huge screen when it came back recently. This is a charming film and it brings me so many happy memories of a life I loved. 🖤🖤🖤
Younger peeps will never understand how pivotal of a moment this was. In pop culture history as well as in the history of the internet. There'll never be hype as intense as there was when this teaser was released, and it was one of the seminal moments where the internet came of age and heralded what was to come
This was the very first movie I got to see in theatres. I begged my mom to let us go see it with my brother. She finally agreed and It opened the world of Star Wars for us. It doesn't matter what people say about it; this movie created special memories for a 13-year-old. It will always be one of my favorite and special films.
I was 10 when this trailer originally came out and I CRIED because it was brand new Star Wars. I couldn’t believe it and I saw the movie 6 times in theaters that summer. By far one of the BEST summers of my life!
I was 20 and I saw it 13 times at the cinema. That's still my record for the most times I've seen a movie at the cinema. My dad even went 5 times and he rarely went to the cinema to see a movie one time!
I was 8 years old when Episode IV came out in 1977, and 30 years old when Episode I was released in theaters. After Episode VI and 16 years of waiting, the anticipation was an event in itself. Of course I went to see both more than 5 times at the theaters. Like you, those were two of the best summers of my youth.
I was 19 when it released. The hype was unreal absolute legendary. Leading up to it was amazing. Despite what anyone thinks about the movie, the time around it had great memories that I'll always cherish. My favorite time is the Star Wars fan
I finally got to experience this movie in cinema for the first time and boy was it good. Hearing Duel of the Fates and watching it was spectacular. I hope they re release the whole saga
I watched it in theaters for the first time now too! It made me appreciate this movie a whole lot more tbh cuz I would often think it was slow or boring but seeing it in theaters made me feel more excited about it!
They've already rereleased Empire and Jedi for their anniversaries. And Rogue One got a rerelease to promote Andor with. So that leaves Clones, Sith, Solo, Hope & the sequel trilogy for individual rereleases.
I spent 18 hours downloading this trailer back when it first came out. It had been 16 years since Return of the Jedi. We thought we would never see another Star Wars movie. The first time seeing "Every saga has a beginning..." gave me goosebumps.
Episode 1, 2, and 3 holds the same special place in my heart as those who grew up with the Original Trilogy. Still a testament to the OG trilogy that few after has even come close to equating, let alone surpassed them.
I Grew Up With The Phantom Menace, Attack of the clones and The OT. They Were Great Movies To Watch as a Kid, Especially Because I was so dumb to not even know that Anakin Skywalker was Darth Vader. (I watched these movies when I was like 4.)
I remember camping out in front of a theater over night, with a line that wrapped around the building (nearly twice) just to buy tickets. People cosplaying, having pizzas delivered to the front of the theater, BBQing, playing Star Wars games (Trivial Pursuit, etc), blasting Star Wars soundtracks on stereos. It was a total blast!
As a now 40 year old man this movie still has a special place in my heart, as it was the first star wars movie i have ever seen in the cinema back when it was released. And now 25 years later went to see it again in the cinema and it was still fun to see on the big screen . Happy to see its getting more love the last few years.
I love that the organic 35mm grain structure is intact in this trailer. It's really lacking from the Disney+/UHD Bluray presentation of the film, as it is an upscale of the 2K master with too much noise reduction applied, making certain shots look very waxy and pasty.
Sigh...if only they can re-master Episodes 1-6 with the grain structure intact. Looks like whoever is in charge of mastering the films doesn't like grain, which is a SHAME.
@@spartan2188lol you think the people in charge don’t like grain? It’s the consumer who is used to a slick digital look who will complain about film grain 💯
I’m 32 now. I remember when this came out. I used to watch episode 4,5,6 on VHS all the time. My mom had recorded them off the tv onto blank tapes. This was the first new Star Wars movie for my generation. I was 8 I believe. I remember being POD Racer Anakin that Halloween ( or it may have been the year after that ). Either way I was psyched and my mom took me to see this a million times. Same with episode 2, and 3. Star Wars was her favorite movie saga and I was already hooked on the original trilogy. Being able to go to the actual movie theater and experience the magic was something else. I’ll never forget that feeling.
We all gathered around a coworker’s desk to watch a grainy copy of it on his CRT monitor. And then came boss man: “Hey, what’s everyone up to here? Seems like not a lot of work going on!” 😂
Yup, we had to shut the phone line down over night to watch a postage stamp sized 240p trailer in quicktime... I was blown away by the trailer... Then I watched the movie and was thoroughly disappointed. That year belonged to the Matrix.
feels every second. nostalgia, memories, fandom, love, passion, geeking... so much language to describe it and yet it at the same time it doesn't seem complete
Memories of ‘99. Right before I saw the movie I went to Toys R Us, drooling over new Star Wars action figures. Literally a dream come true. Then after the show I had Taco Bell and browsed Blockbuster Video. This actually happened. What a time to be alive! ❤
I'm 35 now and man I sure miss those days. Used to leave Hollywood video on a Friday with an absolute stack of new movies to binge in HS. Playing outside too, not a lot of kids do that anymore. Good times!
Midnight showing, Westminster California. A theater that usually showed foreign films with subtitles was playing it, so NO ONE KNEW that there would be a showing there. Not only did we not have to wait in line, but the theater never even fully filled up. It was amazing. It still had a lot of fans in it. We thought we weren't going to catch the premier, because it was sold out at every conventional theater, but again, we lucked out by checking this one. It was my first midnight showing, and what a great film to be my first midnight showing.
As I wasn't alive when this first came out in the theaters, it was a real treat to see this in the theater on May the 4th this year! May the Force be with you all.
I'll NEVER forget the excitement of sitting in the theater, the lights going down, and seeing that "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." come on the screen!
I was 4 years old when this came out, and I'll never forget seeing it for the first time. My dad was watching TV one day when Empire Strikes Back was on, he called me into the room to watch the duel between Vader and Luke. I had no idea what I was even looking at, but I was absolutely glued. Not too long after he got me the VHS copy of this film. I watched it over and over again for years! Glad that the Phantom Menace is finally getting the love it always deserved.
He's all CG in the movie, so jarring to see this poorly done puppet version in the trailer. I think the main problem is his face is too stiff. The OG puppets were much more expressive
Recently went and seen this in theaters again for the 25th anniversary. I went to the original for my birthday party as a child, was incredible to see it on the big screen again. Timeless.
@@pixelbat It damned feels like it! It scares the hell out of me whenever I see a TV show billed as a "period drama," or "period sitcom," and its set in the 90s! Makes me feel sick sometimes!
I was a projectionist at the time, and when these trailers arrived I strung all 7 together, and I put on a special preview screening for the cinema staff, watching it 7 times in a row on the biggest screen in the place. Magical.
Man, I watched this trailer countless times when it first released. I was still in high school and this was the first glimpse of anything truly new from Star Wars since I was 2 or 3 (of course I don’t remember seeing RotJ back then, but I had some sick Star Wars bedsheets lol).
I love this movie and the entire Prequel Trilogy, I'm so glad these movies are getting love and recognition. Star Wars wouldn't be the same without them, they added so many interesting things to the canon. Today is also the 19th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith. I hope this film returns to theaters next year for the 20th anniversary ♥️
@@thegoodreylo4749 what's wierd is that these people are giving money to Disney (who created the sequel trilogy and disregarded Anakins fate and sacrifice) to see Phantom Menace, the genesis of Anakin and the beginning of Qui-Gons view of the chosen one to destroy the sith. Actually, yes,it's very wierd from a storytelling and marketing standpoint.
I was 9 years old when my dad took me and my brother on a Thursday to the only cinema on my hometown in Mexico. It was one of the most exciting movies I've seen in the big screen as a kid.
This movie has such a special place in so many people's hearts, especially the young kids who grew up with this being the first star wars movie they saw in theaters. Was impossible not to tear up being in a packed movie theater after 25 years in 2024 to see it again with all of those same kids that are now adults around 30. Really beautiful experience man. I can't wait for the re-release of AOTC and ROTS
I remember taking this trailer and editing my own version for a project in college...back in '98. I wish I could find it. I do remember getting an A on it and everyone loving it.
THE SAGA BEGINS MAY 1999. still get the same euphoric feeling in the pit of my stomach whenever i see that. i remember the immeasurable excitement i had leading up to the May 19th release. i was 16 then and cut school to see it at the Sam Eric theater in downtown Philadelphia. saw it an addition 4 times throughout the summer of 1999. i just saw the 25th anniversary release a few weeks ago. same feeling. it is a great movie.
Man, I remember as a kid i came home from school and there it was... Star Wars The Phantom Menace on VHS.. its case standing upwards on the counter. Me and my brother were so hyped to watch it again, those were the days :')
There was a web site - Apple trailers. And usually there were 3 sizes - 180p, 240p and 360p. And the "Phantom Menace" trailer was the first avalible in 480p! The resolution was outstanding! I still have those trailers burned on a CD somewhere...
1999 was a peak time to be a movie fan. Phantom Menace, Fight Club, The Mummy, The Matrix, Office Space, The Boondock Saints, The Iron Giant, American Pie, The Blair Witch Project, Galaxy Quest, Austin Powers, 10 Things I Hate About You, Cruel Intentions, The 6th Sense, American Beauty, Disneys Tarzan, and so much more.
I was 9 years old when this came out in Sweden. I saw it at a tiny local cinema who had to change the rolls in the middle of the podcast. Something was wrong with the projector so the second half of the movie was all green but man did I LOVE that movie and still do today! It was pure FUN!
Yeah I’m a lil confused. Like this probably for Disney- but it would’ve been nice to see the remastered shots for the trailer not the original trailer reuploaded
@@thefriendlygamer2221 Episodes 1-3 UHDs were made with 2K masters. Episodes 2-3 were filmed in 1080p so they can never be 4K. Phantom Menace however was shot on 35mm
Love this on film. Can't tell you how many times I saw this while I worked at a theater in '99, had to keep the reel from brain wrapping on the platter. Good times.
This was in the cinema last week for its 25 year anniversary. People clapped when the Star Wars logo came on the screen. It was such a nostalgic experience. I watched this movie almost every week as a child and I still love it. I could talk along some of the scenes (as did another guy a row behind me in the cinema, lol). It is just so much fun. The Naboo planet is gorgeous and the pod racing sound effects are insane. I think this is my most watched movie ever.
I was there too back at the cinema recently for the 25th anniversary. Even though I saw it in cinemas when the movie first came out, I was a little too young to remember the event. Seeing it again all these years later was a truly remarkable experience. One thing I never appreciated was how truly great the sound of this movie is. Not just the musical score but all the sound mixing and audio effects.
low key my favorite of the prequels. when this came out I was like 7 and my dad took me to the movies in japan where i grew up, nobody else was in the theaters. i cried at the end for obvious reasons but man what an experience. no star wars movie since phantom has exceeded my expectations like this one.
Meet Joe Black saw a spike in ticket sales because people would buy a ticket, wait for the Star Wars trailer, and then leave. What an incredible time to be alive.
My favourite Star Wars film! I love Qui Gon, Duel of Fates, Young Ani, Pod Racing, Politics, Naboo, Queen Amidala, everything! So happy to see it get some love ❤️
This is actually the first time I have seen the trailer for TPM. Takes me right back to May 1999 on the cusp of 14 with my best friend and a cinema packed with kids, teens and adults alike. I remember the kids sitting infront of us loved Jar Jar Binks and his physical comedy. I remember the rumbling sound of the lightsabers and the appropriately epic choral from the "Duel of the Fates" during the final act. That lightsaber battle absolutely blew me away. It still hasn't been topped or equalled since. And I remember the sound of the pod racers (sampled from F1) roaring across the screen. TPM has its flaws but it will always have a special place in my memory and my heart. Empire may still be the best SW film but TPM will remain my favourite SW film. ❤
A huge thanks and congratulations to LucasFilm for scanning and releasing this trailer. It looks marvelous. It would be nice to see a new scan of a nice interpositive of the whole feature that maintains the 99 theatrical cut and quality of the original prints.
i remember when this was shown on movie trailers channel on our tv in florida. my mom taped it when i was sleeping and she told me the next morning she had surprise for me and it was the teaser trailer for episode one. i watched that over and over again and when the second trailer came out with the title, i got goose bumps from watching it, it had me so excited.
