Star Wars: X-Wing with the power of soundfonts!

The intro and gameplay of Star-Wars: X-Wing with improved general MIDI sound. Sounds much more like the actual movie soundtracks at times, doesn't it? ;-)
The soundfont is a custom one I edited together in Viena. I used instruments mainly from SGM-V2.01.sf2 and WeedsGM3.sf2, the two best in my opinion. Most of the instruments are from SGM, while some (such as the french horn, choir and flute) are from Weeds. I also took a hackish approach and edited moar reverb to some brass instruments, to make them sound more cinematic :-P
I used a custom build of DOSBox by Ykhwong, which has many additional features such as a FluidSynth-based synthetizer. That way I could easily capture the MIDI using DOSBox' own recording feature.
Star Wars: X-Wing was chosen for demonstration for its symphonic orchestra style soundtrack and its iMUSE system, which can alter the MIDI music on the fly depending on what's going on in the game.

I would definitely be interested to try your work! SGM is great and all, but I feel tweaking is definitely needed. I think the general mix of yours is a great improvement! I'm also a fluidsynth user. It's also very interesting to hear what the floppy version of xwing sounds like. I had no idea it was so different for the digitized sound effects then my collectors cdrom edition.

Joshua Pettus I would love to release the soundfont, but am kinda afraid to because I'm a n00b when it comes to legal details. Since the upload of this video, I've incorporated instruments from hundreds of soundfonts (and haven't kept track of which each instrument is from), and wouldn't know what license(s) would be compatible or good or something like that.Maybe I should create previews of what my soundfont currently sounds like and see if there's interest.And by the way, I actually use the BASSMIDI driver a lot more, and used FluidSynth because that's what the DOSBox version I used uses.

I am glad my first sound card was AWE32. I did not even know that midi could be ugly FM Synthesis

I second the comment about the shuttle... The original floppy version played on sound blaster 32 was very good for the time.

Yeah, I might release it as some point. :-) But the thing is, I've edited it a lot more since this video, optimising it for more kinds of MIDI game music and not just Star Wars. This means that I had to reduce the reverb (wich is what makes the brasses sound the way they do in this video, "orchestral"). And the reverb trick only worked in FluidSynth anyway - I've been using/testing the soundfont only in BASSMIDI for a while, and its reverb sounds too different to make the trick work.

Hi! That's awesome. Can you teach me how to output General Midi to my video capture built in the DOSBox by Ykhwong? I just can output the sound, not the Midi.

I almost forgot, the 3.5 inch floppy disks sounded like this. The x wings and shuttles sounded more like ocean waves hitting the shore. Why did only the tie fighters sound authentic?
@LaukkuPaukku

MIDI commands take less data than custom sound effects, so the game programmers mimicked various sounds using General MIDI instruments (instrument 123 is "Sea Shore", for example).

This sounds way better than the original Sound Blaster music, very very close to using a Yamama CM-300!! (The base is slightly weaker than I remembered...)

How hard would it have been for Lucasarts to incorporate something like this into the X-Wing Windows 98 Special Edition release instead of the non dynamic sound track it included. That was the most disappointing thing about the Special Edition.

Love the music, though the shuttle from the independence sounds a lot like it's a 2-stroke. ;p

If you have the time, would you specify which instruments did you take from WeedsGM3 sound font? They are not just french horn, choir, and flute, are they? Also, do you remember how much reverb did you give to each brass instrument? And which ones? Your Star Wars brass instruments sound much better than those of Timbres of Heaven sound font. Timbres of Heaven's Star Wars brass instruments still suffer from too much harshness, just like most other sound fonts out there. It seems adding reverb and/or using WeedsGM3 brass instruments cures the harshness. However, Timbres of Heaven is an impressive sound font set otherwise, so I wonder if I could give it the same treatment as you did to this SGM "raw materials". Many thanks.

If you want to recreate what the sf2 sounded like at the time of making this video, then yeah, those should be the instruments - plus harmonica from Weeds, and maybe muted trumpet, sawtooth and atmosphere from GeneralUser GS IIRC (although those shouldn't be heard in this video). And you should use Ykhwong's DOSBox build (version from 27th January 2014 is stable) if you want the reverb to also sound the same. Reverb values were something like trumpet:100 french horn:100 trombone: 100 strings:50 If I modified the reverb of other brass instruments too, I most likely put them also at 100 (max).
@BaronKresnar
@BaronKresnar 6 лет назад
I see. Many thanks! Anyway, why do you need Ykhwong's DOSBox build to maintain the reverb? If I used soft synth like Fluidsynth or BASSMIDI driver, wouldn't the reverb stay?
@LaukkuPaukku
@LaukkuPaukku 6 лет назад
That's really only if you want it so sound like in this video though, which is a very specific case. For normal usage, I recommend the latest version of my soundfont, available here: www.synthfont.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=76 You can edit brass reverb values in it to 100 too if you want. :-P

The good old day of midi sound tracks. I used to have a Soundblaster 32 with extra ram and a Ultrasound Ace in my computer. Most of the time the SB was used for sound effects and the ACE for midi. I preferred the midi sound of the ACE. :) Unfortunately not all games supported the ACE.

Old Gamers Network I've thought of getting a keyboard that I can connect using USB for MIDI output. I've seen General MIDI, as well as Extended MIDI keyboards.

OSuKaRu TV You'd better not use a GM font for MT32 as they're incompatible formats, you should try Munt instead (it's a MT32 emulator). I was using a GM font for GM midi here in this video. I'll see about releasing the font sometime since a few people have been asking for it.

Laukku Thanks. If there's a way to rearrange the Dosbox MT-32 output to workaround it to GM would be perfect. I'm trying MT32D, but it sounds awful and i don't want to tweak the dosbox.conf every time i want to play, for instance,, WC1 :P

Hi Laukku! This is awesome, i love playing with soundfonts, and old midi games. My questions are: Can you save/make a SF2 from the soundfonts you used? Can you make 1 from TIE FIGHTER? :D
@LaukkuPaukku
@LaukkuPaukku 9 лет назад
A soundfont *is* a SF2 file. :-P I didn't really understand your last question... I assume you meant "for", not "from". You want me to make a soundfont, or a video for TIE Fighter?
@kakashi1984068
@kakashi1984068 9 лет назад
Laukku Ups! Sorry. Bad in english. :D The question was: can you make a video of Tie Fighter with this soundfonts? And my oder question was, that can you somehow combine the best soundfonts into one sf2? Because you said, you used two soundfonts and combined it.
@LaukkuPaukku
@LaukkuPaukku 9 лет назад
kakashi1984068 Yeah, I can make a video of TIE Fighter. As for your second question, I've been using Viena to edit ( www.synthfont.com/Viena_news.html ), and in fact I've been editing my soundfont further by using the best instruments I could find from soundfonts on the net. You can see the latest version in action in this video of Sam and Max: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bK7sCU6qKf8.html

Laukku Wow! Nice! But how do you use the modified soundfont? It has to be saved right?
@LaukkuPaukku
@LaukkuPaukku 9 лет назад
You can save the SF2 with a new filename after editing it in Viena (or some other soundfont edit program). To use the SF2, you either install a MIDI driver that supports soundfonts - such as BASSMIDI ( www.kode54.net/bassmididrv/ ) or VirtualMIDISynth ( coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth ) - or you can use a custom DOSBox version that supports soundfonts.
