It’s a certified classic album people’s biggest critique is it’s “pop” even tho the album is more hip hop, disco n R&B influence. Also news flash he is a pop star
Not because it’s pop after hours is pretty much a synth pop album but the problem with albums like BBTM and Starboy is they lack cohesion and some of the tracks on BBTM and Starboy were just filler and shouldn’t have been on those records and made those albums sound more like mixtapes than actual studio LPS
Yeah, at this point idk what the difference is. Its not extremely pop, its kinda like in the middle and his overall style was similar too. People nowadays just assume that more mainstream=worse art, even though that’s completely false! BBTM and Starboy are legendary albums you can’t tell me otherwise.
Idk I didn’t like a few of the tracks on it. There’s maybe 10 or 11 tracks (out of 18) that are great and replayable but the rest is just annoying filler to me. If the tracklist was cut down a bit I’d like it more
starboy is fucking amazing, but After Hours took it to a whole new level. I think it's the deepest and darkest album he's made, and it's the only album ever made that I personally find to be a perfect 10/10.
This was the first album that REALLY got me into The Weeknd. I had heard a few hit singles from Beauty on the radio and was interested. Once the self titled track Starboy came out, I was hooked! Been a huge fan of his music ever since then! Super excited for his upcoming record! Really love these mini documentaries as well. Very professional! Keep them coming! You should do one on My Dear Melancholy! In my opinion that is a very underrated body of work from Abel even though it's only 6 tracks..
5 years later Starboy is everything a Pop album should be, full of danceable tracks (Starboy, Secrets, A Lonely Night) and slow jams (Die For You, I Feel it Coming, Attention). Pays tribute to Michael Jackson and throwback pop/Disco. Each song telling a story (love, fear, paranoia). Starboy in my eyes is a classic Weeknd album💯
Thank you so much for making this video. People really forget why Starboy is such a good album. I love Starboy and it’s my favorite album from all of them. It just sounds so unique and amazing. It has the best songs I’ve ever heard in my life lol. The way u described the story behind it really shows to prove that these “real” xo fans gotta stop defying who The Weeknd is when Abel is the one who defies himself and that’s what he did with Starboy. It was a rebirth like u said and it really does have a story. I like listening to Starboy because it makes me happy it makes me feel good. I also love the love tracks that it has. Cause even tho u have it all and are a Starboy, you can still fall in love with someone and wanna die for them. It really shows who The Weeknd is and how much his life has changed. Obviously things went downhill for him and we got the next 2 albums. But even with Starboy he tells a lot about himself. A real XO would love Starboy and understand the truth behind it and understand that The Weeknd is not just a sad heart broken singer. He’s one of the greatest artists to ever exists and he made his way up to even become a Starboy. Thank you for this video lol
great vid man I like to think of his albums as independent personalities. He's even said himself he redefines his character for each project and obv starts this one by killing is older self, quite a bold statement. Id argue the abel we see in later projects isnt the same abel from this project. I like to think the character he makes for each project is a semi reflection of himself at that point in his life, but ultimately theyre all meant to be different personas.
Yeah that’s a really interesting take. His albums really do feel like movies, in the sense that Weeknd is the director and lead star but the characters are in different contexts each time
I will preface this by saying in no way is this meant to come off as trying to imply I have fame in any sense. But watching his videos my mouth is on the floor seeing have a theme track between his life and my life experiences (in different social environments and different career industries). The parallels are creepily uncanny. The point being I am technically the same person I was then. But in every meaningful way I’m completely different. Same could apply to him
Great video, Im a fanboy of Starboy myself, Its the album that got me into Abel and is my most listened album and I love your thoughts and ideas on what the album is about. Even if it is hated for some reason I still love it. XO
@@lev444rr that's what Abel belongs to but Starboy was not RnB it was an upbeat pop album and that's why alot of people don't like it 'cause it's not the Abel's genre
@@RenTheMighty nah it's not a personal thing, that album is in and out a pop album from production to lyrics wiring, nobody can deny on it but maybe people have a perception of his music just being RnB or they think black people's music fall in RnB genre that's why they think it's a RnB album but it's totally not a RnB, Abel himself has stated in interview that it's a pop album ahead of the time it was released.
@@deepaksinghxo Bruh it was filled with R&B/Soul records as well, and I agree it's a little more pop. But songs like Starboy, Party Monster, Reminder, True Colors, Sidewalks, Six Feet Under, Attention, All I Know, I Feel It Coming are all R&B records.
ngl I always thought Lana would be the perfect collab, Weeknd is the guy lana constantly talks about in her music and vice versa, was really cool to see it happen the way it did in starboy. All that aside the way Future comes in on All I Know is such a great musical moment, also its neat to see someone else appriciating this record.
Man what a video! Thank you Seamus. You basically rounded up everything I love about this album. It's easily one of my all-time favourites. There is not one song on Starboy that I'd consider weak and although they're all quite different from each other, there's a really interesting sense of thematic connectedness that you just rarely see with albums today. I can remember the exact day it dropped and hearing it for the first time like it was yesterday. It was on Black Friday almost five years ago in the London, so the timing of this video is kinda perfect! Man, I've got so many memories from this album aaaahhh! Thank you for triggering the nostalgia!
Me too The Weeknd is my second fav artist of all time and Both Kiss Land and Starboy are my top favs for him and the amount of talent in only just how he’s telling story within them is inspiring
I love starboy so much, I'm so hyped when this album came and became a fan of the weeknd, some critics said it's too pop but idc because this is a masterpiece. I hope u can deep dive next into My Dear Melancholy. great video 🔥
Literally my favorite album by him… every song hits🔥🔥 almost every song he releases is 🔥 from features to remixes he always brings his own spice to it 🥰💕
Man that false alarm video completely changed my mind on the song. When I first heard it my initial thoughts were “tf is this” which was the general consensus but once that video hit I got it.
The best day time music album of all time! The vibes I get from this album is indescribable ..this shit makes me that yeah I’got some swagger on me to go on!♥️ XOTWOD
Im an og weeknd fan. Been a fan since early 2013 when all he had out was Trilogy but I really love starboy too. Yes it’s more pop. Yes it’s a bit bloated with some skippable tracks but it’s lit, it has some darkness to it, it’s bold and it’s just fun. I went to both phases of the starboy tour and it was a great time to be alive. It’s crazy that this album is 5 years old now. Time flies when you’re having fun. Excellent analysis by the way. Keep them coming. We still need beauty, mdm and trilogy. XO
Such an underrated album by XO fans. So many bangers. Even if it’s not cinematic or as greatly produced as some of his other albums, it’s still a really fun album with some great songs (also some weak songs but not many of them)
@@dez-m it really is! All I Know, Secrets, Die For You, Reminder, Party Monster, Six Feet Under, and Ordinary Life all on the same album plus a bunch of other tracks with great production
This is the first Weeknd album you listened to? Oh boy, wish you would have heard Trilogy first! It's honestly a night and day difference haha. This is clearly a wonderful album but nothing compares to Trilogy. Then again, this album is how he became a mainstream international superstar so it did what it was supposed to do. Hope you talk about AH next!
This is a criminally under-rated channel!! Great video as always, deserves far more views and success than it’s getting. This is a perspective on this album, and Abel as a whole, that more people need to see
Honestly even tho Starboy is one of my least favorite projects by The Weeknd this video has given me a deeper understanding and a better appreciation for it. Great job.
Starboy to me is still like a weird in between album for me because I found The Weeknd around the Trilogy era so I was a fan of his darker music but Starboy definitely did have timeless songs especially Die For You. My personal favorites are of course Die For You, True Colors, and Nothing Without You
i think starboy was the only album where the weeknd was not himself but was abel tesfaye..cause the weeknd sings about drugs, party and stuff but the abel tesfaye sang about fame power and money...the only two albums where it was the weeknd himself was in After hours and the trilogy
Love this video, i was looking for a person to explain the whole after hours album + all the other songs he has made till today, supposely its the same character i mean ( La Fama, One right Now, Take my Breath) these other songs that have the same character
I still don't get why people dislike starboy just because of it being pop. some people say it isnt as dark and mysterious as the older albums but Abel is telling everyone he has changed his ways and has become somewhat religious. He wants to leave the evil part of himself behind but unfortunately fans wont let him.
