Their coffee tastes like hot cardboard water. There are plenty of far better choices, but I will give them points for consistency. It tastes the same no matter where you go. It is a little comforting if you're on a road trip or in an unfamiliar place and need some coffee. You've also got to give them points for popularizing the third space concept.
@abbreviatedalex2418
@abbreviatedalex2418 3 года назад
The "third place" concept isn't actually a part of the training anymore. I saw it mentioned in my training two and a half years ago but it was not discussed in depth, and people trained in the past year didn't get any training on it at all. Thanks, Kevin Johnson! Don't go to Starbucks. They're living on the social capital that Joward Schultz accumulated for the semi decent practices he put in place. That social capital is slowly but surely running out, leaving only hypocrisy and exploitation sanitized and sold by a well funded marketing team as an ethical, socially responsible company.

@SCraig-Handsome
@SCraig-Handsome 2 года назад
You shouldn’t assume that the recycle bin means that the business recycles. In many cases they don’t as there are additional costs for that. I remember a business I worked for had waste, organic, plastic and cardboard recycling bins but we didn’t have 4 different bins in the back only 2 so we only recycled the cardboard. Eventually we did get a plastic recycling bin but the cost’s spiraled out of control and we canceled it. Recycling is not cheap it’s like donating clothes to a local thrift store. At some point the costs and volumes force businesses to make some obvious decisions. I worked for one company that used to call it Warehouse #2… but basically it meant we were taking a truck load of donations to the landfill.

Ours doesn't have a sign but the gardening community knows they save grounds for whoever comes in and asks for them. But the local coffee shop does too. Plus local roasts their beans right there so they have worn out burlap bean sacks with a variety of cool designs they give away for repurposing. Local is better coffee too which matters, because you are going to buy coffee when you go in for "free" stuff. Or you should.

Maybe this has already been mentioned in the comments somewhere, but I know a few baristas will make your drink in a disposable cup to save time in the drive thru. This happens most often with hot drinks, but it’s mainly because our goal is to have the drink ready before the customer reaches the window. The issue with your reusable cup in the drive thru is that we then have to wait until we receive your cup to make the drink. This will then mess up our sequencing and cause the wait time to be longer. Best option is to just come into the cafe to use your reusable cup. It may be worth mentioning that if you’re looking to order a Frappuccino using a reusable cup, unfortunately I’m not allow to use you cup to make it. On the clear cups there are 3 black lines, and we use those as measurements for the milk in the frap. I have to first pour the milk into the cup to measure it, then pour it into the blender, but this can cause a cross contamination or we just simply can no longer guarantee the cleanliness of our tools. So in order to keep our tools guaranteed clean, and uninflected from anything from outside the cafe, reusable cups aren’t the best idea for fraps. I really would like to see Starbucks create a tool that we can use to measure the milk for the Frappuccino’s differently, so that the reusable cups aren’t rendered useless for fraps. I don’t use the paper cup to measure the milk in a latte, so I don’t see why I need to for the fraps. Obviously right now with the pandemic we’re not taking reusable cups, but it is also disheartening that Starbucks cups are not compostable or recyclable. They’re not even well designed cups, so it’s not as if there is a barrier stopping it from being more eco. Most coffee shops offer a better insulated cup (McDonald’s for example) that is either thicker or double walled. I will agree that it is a nice job to work. You get the odd customer that is not pleasant, but that essentially happens in all service jobs. The company treats their employees relatively well, and the baristas behind the counter tend to get along with one another. I wouldn’t say the pay is anything outstanding tho. It’s simply a minimum wage job, and typically “raises” work at 6 month intervals @1% increase.

Oh, just to mention the grounds really quick. I honestly don’t know many locations that actually use green bins, even if the city has a green bin program. Call your Starbucks the day before asking if they’d be willing to collect their grinds for the day. Offer to bring in a bin (maybe a bucket) so that they can have something to collect it into. Drop the bucket off in the morning, pick up in the evening.

At my Starbucks in 2014, nothing was recycled. Not even milk jugs. EXPIRED food was donated once a week to a homeless shelter but the partners were allowed to go through it first. So so so so much waste. I worked at a tiny starbucks (9 employees including management) and we’d go through 10-15 4L jugs a day of milk none of which was recycled. A tip! Starbucks sill give anyone old coffee grounds if they ask. Apparently they’re useful for gardening. Oop he brought this up.

I used to be a daily Starbucks drinker (sometimes up to 3 times a day, to my shame). Before I get flamed, yes, I used my own cup. Then I did the math, and realized that the actual cost was so much more than I thought I was spending. It’s definitely not good coffee - it’s mediocre at best. But it’s consistent and convenient. You know what you’re going to get, and you can get it pretty much any time of the day you want. These days I brew my own coffee. I get to choose better beans from better suppliers, and it’s saving a ton of money, and it’s even helped me dial back my caffeine intake to a much healthier level.

Starbucks ended up closing a lot of stores in Australia because they couldn't adapt to the coffee culture, particularly in Melbourne. I live in Melbourne and typically we'll go to local independent coffee shops (or at the worst a small chain). The coffee and food at local cafes in Melbourne (particularly in inner suburbs such as Brunswick, Fitzroy and St. Kilda) is so good yet reasonably priced that Starbucks has next to no appeal. I'll go to Starbucks occasionally when I'm in the city for one of their fancier beverages but I go to local cafes way more.

Love the brand reviews! Really helps me make informed decisions. Could you do a video on the brand “Live Clean” they sell soap, hair and body care. Trying to decide if they are genuine or if they are just green washing.

Love your work Levi! Great research, great filming and editing. And who could guess you would dance in a video about Starbucks. Here in Sweden Starbucks is kinda small. We have espresso house (swedish brand) and I think they are as bad as Starbucks when it comes to environmental impact.

Great Video Levi, I dont understand why people love starbucks so much, it is not good coffee. I used to drink it in my 20´s but I always hated that even sitting there I would always get a plastic cup and a straw, and then I realised all the trash I was making while buying Starbucs and I stopped buying it like 10 years ago, I dont drink coffe to go I just drink it at home before I go out and it tastes better and if I have to drink outside, I just go to a coffee shop, anyway, I hope a lot of people can look at this video and can make a better decision about their coffee. Thanks for the video! and great dancing man! Greetings to you and Leah

Barista here... We waste so much stuff at starbucks, it's disgusting. And a lot of the time, staff can't take food home with them. For example, we launched the pistachio Latte which meant that pumpkin spice was over... So what do we do? We dumped out 22 remaining bottles of pumpkin spice syrup because "it was no longer food safe". Seriously? Also, if cake pops for example are out for more than 48 hours then we have to throw them away and also can't take them home despite them being still good. It makes no sense to me. I love my job but still, some of our standards are highly questionable.

Proud to say we no longer have a Starbucks in Malmö! They moved out of the central station and never came back. Honestly I was a bit annoyed at them during the few visits I made, it seemed like they had conquered yet another city in a for them foreign country and shipped in both supplies and staff. No one spoke swedish and while swedes are good at English it felt very disrespectful. Not to mention there could have been little to no benefit for the local economy.

I usually just make coffee at home or walk down to a local shop if I want something fancier than what I can do with my set-up. But given that I'm in a career field where moving to a new city, state, or even across the country with fairly short notice is completely normal - I usually stop at starbucks a few times when I move to a new place because I want something familiar.

Starbucks Barista here, really well done video. At the branch I work at we do make the drinks in the resuable cups, pretty sad to hear other branches dont. It's hard to quantify how common of an issue this is. I work in a space with other coffee chains in the same space, I've seen where the coffee is sourced from each chain. Out of the 4, Starbucks does have the highest quality...naturally local coffee shops are bound to have better stuff though.

In all fairness there are a lot of places that don't know how to make coffee. They throw grounds in a machine that mixes them with hot water and then they toss the grounds and start again. The thing people don't realize is you'll get a better pot if you reuse the grounds. I make the coffee strong to begin with to compensate for the weaker used grounds and then I'll scoop out a spoon full of old grounds and add a spoon full of fresh grounds to keep it hardy. The reason you want to do this because coffee is very acidic which is what gives its flavor such a bitter bite and running it through boiling water removes some of its acidity. The hotter the water the better, you want that water to be rolling hot. This is what cowboys did in the old west since cream and sugar wasn't an option on the prairie or a wagon train. They also used eggshells because they helped absorb the acid as well. Now that you have some grounds with the acid boiled out you want to save them because they will still bleed and they'll give you a richer coffee that doesn't taste like lye water.

Not sure if this is everywhere, but usually restaurants (and other commercial businesses) need a private carting company to haul away their waste, the local sanitation won’t touch it. Some carting companies will “sort off site” recyclables, so everything going into the same bag does not necessarily mean it’s all going to the landfill.

The baristas at my local Starbucks know how to use reusable cups, so that's a plus. I even got one of theirs because while I actually have an insulated mug it's to small for their sizes. Also it takes ages until you can drink hot coffee in an insulated mug cause it just doesn't cool down. Also when I go to Starbucks I get some kind of extravagant drink that I wouldn't make myself cause if it's just simple coffee, I can do that on my own (and put it in my insulated mug if I want it on the go)

Couple of issues here. The biggest one talking about C.A.F.E and ethical sourcing. Starbucks not only supports the free trade initiative, but they also support the communities around the farms as well. They build schools, pay higher wages, and pay out the farms even if the crop fails to yield the promised amount (or get struck with pests or natural causes). They even flew out a bunch of managers a few years back to check out the farms in Costa Rica. After the company failing me numerous times over a decade that was one of the things left I was actually proud of telling people. Also the reusable cup initiative definitely worked, you get a discount for using one and I would argue that well over 40% of customers at the stores i've worked at use them. The confused baristas pouring them from the paper cups were most likely in drive-through stores, where they aren't going to wait until you pull up to the window to then make your drink. As far as the quality of the beans go, take the bags home and use them yourself with decent equipment and you get a much better experience -- especially with some of the limited runs they do. Check out the roastery in Seattle Levi, it's actually rad. Keep up the great content!

If you ever want to get into barista work, don't let Starbucks be your first job.... as a person whose worked and trained for multiple artisan coffee companies AND had the unpleasant experience of working for Starbucks out of pity for 3 months, I'm being honest.... between no dialing in to the espresso, resulting into a slur that looks like dishwater, no training on how to actually steam milk, and the "guidelines" that purposefully make serving a proper latte take forever and spoil the espresso before it should even be served... Starbucks is just a massive no. (not to mention the coldbrew that'd come to store in an unmarked bag that just said "cold brew) There's no way of saying it without sounding like a coffee snob, but when previous Starbucks workers would apply to other chains or shops, management would literally just deem them "inexperienced" and there was merit to it unfortunately. When I have to essentially train the manager (as an employee) of "the best store" in the city on how to not burn milk, something is grossly wrong. I've got even more stories, just from those three short months, but I'll just leave it at that. You're paying money for a brand, not the quality.

I watched it for interest. Not a fan of Starbuck's. I hate that UVic closed Finnerty and many local bakeries weren't incorporated into other outlets on campus. The reasoning, a survey said a Starbuck's was wanted. To me it's a step backwards for UVic. Cheered when I noticed the one closed across from QV Bakery. I used to get coffee grounds from them for my garden, but most coffee places will give them to you if you ask. I don't drink coffee, but if I do or use in baking, I source organic and small local places. As 2% Jazz states -- friends don't send friends to Starbuck's. We could talk about tea and how it's sourced too.

what I do to reduce my waste when going to Starbucks is always ask without straw (I always bring my own) and when asking for warm drinks I ask in a mug (so far never had problems). about their cold drinks I tried to ask in mug too, but they said they couldn't do it because they have the measurements in those plastic cups, so I guess they do in disposable cups and transfer because of this. one thing they could do is get a reusable measurements for doing their drinks 🤷‍♀️
