@@jackofblades3171 Can't say I disagree. I own the G1 and use it with a WinMax2 7840u. It's a decent GPU, but it is quite loud when under load and is expensive for the performance it gives.
@@jackofblades3171 yeah, in terms of gross performance and value G1 isn't a good deal, but when talking about GPD products it's all about form factor. I know a 30% cheaper hardware will perform the same, but it won't be as portable.
@@jackofblades3171 specfially now that ADT has a oculink egpu solution that can use Dell / lenovo 330W bricks!. egpu enclosure version only fits 270mm cards tho, youll have to make your own if you have a larger card you want to use
i've been waiting for your reviews, the fact that something the size of a 3ds can run a new AAA games at settings not far off an actual console (the XSS) is legit mind-blowing to me. I would assume that with later updates/optimization the game will better utilize the hardware, but even if not it still looks and runs well enough that I wouldn't mind that much. If I ever do play starfield this is definitely one of the ways I would do it.
@@Jimmys_TheBestCop It all comes down to what form factor do you like the most. Do you prefer the PS Vita like design of the GPD Win 4? or do you like the 3DS Clam Shell design of the GPD Win Mini? If comfort is a concern there an optional grip you can buy for the GPD Win Mini.
@@Xion_Stellar I like clamshells however the trackpad appears to be in such an awkward spot and most indy games and turn based tactical you need mouse functions. So I would lean more into the Win 4. I do feel like no handheld is the complete package since there are no standards like desktop/laptop. But GPD comes the closest. The Asus Ally is overrated. No keyboard, no trackpad, no oculink. The Lenovo Legion giant screen and at least has trackpad but no oculink and no keyboard. Most games I play I need mouse controls and several I really need keyboard. And windows virtual keyboard kinda sucks. When I stream to laptop or ipad I actually use he Rii i4 keyboard/controller/trackpad device.
I have very little interest in playing _Starfield_ but I'm *extremely* interested in the "But Will It Run On..." coverage. Wild to think the Winni needs
@@ThePhawx You could do a "Lets take a look back at (Insert Game)" and see how some older games play on these newer systems. It can give you a reason to re-play Outer Wilds. =D
I have a steam deck but i'm seriously considering selling it to get this just because of the screen and the fact I get a clam shell design with keyboard. I can se my self using it for a ton of other windows stuff.
Thinking about buying a GPD Win mini. It looks awesome. Does it have its own configuration panel, like the Armory Crate on ROG Ally, to manage your game library, watt usage and fan curves?
Its about time! I very much enjoy The Phawx take on new gpd stuff. HIs glowing review on the 2 win maxes made me buy them immediately. I love having a super powerful all in one device. I really want an experia play predecessor. No matter how many devices release... the best gaming handheld is the one you have with you and most people have their phones. Maybe this pocketable device will be the solution.
The ergonomics of the Steam Deck are unbeatable, at least for me with my ogre hands. I love my Win4, but I am wondering if I would have been better off with a Win Max or Mini...
I'm tempted to get rid of my Win 3 to get a Win Mini...but I don't know if I could find anyone who'd wanna buy a Win 3 around these parts. Especially with the dock's HDMI port having recently died.
Out of interest, would we be able to get a comparison against the 6800u (18w vs 28w)? I sold my Win 4 on a whim when this thing was announced, and I’m wondering if it actually beats a 6800u device while remaining at a palm-able temperature 🤔
It's funny (or sad) that with my GTX 1080 / i7 8700 I'm running the game at 1080p medium-low with FSR2 at around 70% resolution, and getting 30FPS.. These mobile devices are so close now. I love technology. Waiting for my GPD G1 to see how it betters my GTX1080 in this game lol.
games dont really leverage ur graphics card anymore its more ur cpu the i7 8700 is a 6 core 12 thread chip running on 14nm thats considered below low low end now a days maybe if you had 6c12t on a 6nm device or even a 4nm then ull be ok for a few years but 14nm 6c12t is the bottle neck not ur 1080 ull be surprized what a huge difference cpu makes in gaming and its nothing you can see in hardware monitor i get people saying my cpu is only at 38% utilization so it must be the graphics card but thats not how games work they dont levrage all ur cores and threads they take ur CCX to deturmin ur gmaing performance and the CCX on a 14nm 6c12t cpu is like i said below low end now a days
I was expecting it to be more like no man sky ...free driving , atmosphere entry ,landing wherever u want ...exploring planets .....its like 1 site on planet and i cant even call that open world.
Hey Phawx thanks for the preview. I was wondering for your review, do you have any chance of also comparing the 7840U model to the cheaper 7680U model? I am asking because the Win Mini is primarily a low wattage device and I have a small feeling that differences between the chipsets may be neglibible at those lower TDPs. Looking forward to the full review of this beauty. Hoping also for some commentary on fan noise at those TDP thresholds too.
If you are talking about the ryzen 7640u there is a difference on the onboard GPU 780m vs the 760m and its significant. The CPU part of the APU is basically the same. But you are taking a big hit in the GPU part of the APU. However if you plan to stream to the GPD or use occulink for eGPU I would probably go for the 7640u to save money. Not sure the price of the GPD Win Min but the GPD Win 4 7640u is $700 which is only $50 higher than the high end steam deck but you get better screen, cpu/gpu, keyboard and at least adequate trackpad. So its not actually a bad deal. Especially if you are more into streaming from main system or plan to use a dock eGPU.
@BlGMOOD I know that, I just thought it was weird that phawx is doing a star field video with it as opposed to just doing a review or first impression as the first video
does it play on the steamdeck? There is nothing said on steam yet. EDIT: Oh, this is a Bethesda game, I'm surprised it is running this well as new as it is. I don't buy their games until they have been out for at least 6 months, maybe a year. For the playability and I'm sure this will get quality mods by that time.
So the Steam deck seemed to do about 16 FPS at times. The next steam deck revision should do better than 35 fps then otherwise they are wasting money making the new steam deck. In the spirit of the Alienware Alpha Steam Machine. Valve should be aiming for 60 fps across AAA titles with their hardware. They are trying to keep costs down though to make Steam Gaming more accessible to a broader audience.
Valve has opened a pandoras box and has made the traditional dual stick configuration redundant. (Maybe an unpopular but an experianced opinion)... For the price and performance of these devices I dont see the point in a right stick anymore. I really hope gpd ditch this config soon and put some time / money into touch / haptic tech. Keep the trad config in the pow kiddy emu type devices. I would love to see a haptic left stick which can give the feel of 8 way joysticks and micro cherry style switches for buttons
The game is not Vram limited. And really seem to be more CPU limited and uf you compare multiple cpus you'll see it's actually memmory bandwidth (system ram speed) limited
@@thymewellspent That's the only annoying thing about GPD products. I mean, they have high demand and large customer base, why can't they make their own small screen with their own spec (landscape) instead of using ready made 'tablet' screens which is portrait by design. I have GPD Pocket 1 that I backed on crowdfunding long ago and I can't believe they do not acknowledge that this is an issue.
@@thymewellspent Some emulator of retro games doesn't work out of the box and requires some workaround. Also not being natively landscape is just weird decision of these type of hardware design. I mean, they still treat this like a prototype.
exactly the same 6 core 12 threads vs 8core 16 threads Run games exactly the same if you have 4 core 8 threads thats when u see a difference also the graphics in the 7640u is runnig at 2600mhz while the 7840u is running at 2700mhz u wont tell a difference at all the only real difference ull see is if you crank up the textures on the 7840u ull be able to maybe get away with high to medium texturs while the 7640u ull have to keep the textures low or medium cause of the 8 core units compared to the 7840u 12 core gpu units
Great video. Hey, just an idea: To address your concern about decreasing viewership why not focus on more steamdeck related content? The number of people interested in Steamdeck may now greatly outweigh those interested in these other competitor devices. Eg: I myself was interested in GDP, Ayaneo etc but once I got a Steamdeck my interest in watch youtube videos about competitors waned... I now just watch an occasional video of yours just to support you, despite not being thaaaat interested in the competitors.
Respectfully disagree. There's not really much to cover about the Steam Deck these days besides "But Will It Run..." and I feel like competing with @CryoByte33 for the "definitive settings and optimizations" niche is silly. I watch for the "advancement of the handheld space" content and hope he continues debunking the marketing BS companies like ASUS pump out while highlighting the massive innovations made by, for example, GPD with the G1.
I want to buy the GPD WIN Mini But I'm torn between the 7640u and 7840u, I don't plan on running AAA titles on it, it's mainly for emulation. Will PS3 and Xbox 360 emulation be better on the 7640u than the 7840u? I am currently using a 6800u version of the Win Max 2
@@sniperdude425 It is big, I found the best way to play games on it is totally extending it out vertically resting the keyboard on my knees, and playing it like a tablet
The Best thing I loved about the Steam Deck was the screen size, and the mini shares the same screen but with higher resolution. The max 2 has a larger screen suited for web browsing. and more I/O because of it's bigger size @@sniperdude425
The difference between the 6800U and the 7840U on paper is about 20% more powerful so it would be definitely less compared to the 7640U. That still doesn't mean PS3 emulation will run 20% faster than on your Max 2. You may not even see a difference.
@@sniperdude425 I own both the Win 4 and Win Max 2. The Win Max 2 is definitely heavier and less ergonomic, but since the screen is so big, you can extend your arms and rest the device on your legs and still see the game just fine. It's also much easier to type on and use just as a laptop. The resolution is also higher and the analog sticks are significantly better than the Win 4's. I think the Win Max 2 is just so awesome for many uses, and it has better thermals. The Win 4 is really cool and small, and definitely more comfortable, but it's still pretty heavy and definitely still not pocketable. It also gets warmer to the touch at the same tdp. In all honesty, I think the Win Mini will be the best pocketable device they've ever made. The Win 4 is like the Nintendo Switch. It's still too big to pocket, so you'll still need a case or bag to carry it safely. The Win Mini will solve that. The only issue is that the Mini will be way worse to type on than the max, and will be too small to use as a laptop. All 3 designs have trade-offs. I personally prefer the Win Max 2 because it's my everything device. I don't need to move files or worry about what games are downloaded where. I can read manga, do my taxes, watch media, handheld game, and now that I'll be getting the G1, I'll be able to have a desktop-like experience by simply plugging it in. I've purchased several gaming laptops in the past, and the Win Max 2 is by far the coolest and most useful.
hello Phawxn thanks for your video. I am using the gpd win max 2 2023 and i cannot play the game with a correct resolution. Do u have any clue to help me?
Can this device be used handheld at 28W or 30W? I don’t care about battery life, as I play tethered to AC. Some folks are saying that the Win Mini runs too hot above 25W because it has a small surface area for heat dissipation.
uhh i dont think anyone here is interested in starfield but then agian who knows personaly i hate over hyped crap games which really have nothing to offer
