Shortcut to get back to this video: WalkingStarfish.com
It was early evening, probably around 6pm or so at low tide. We noticed there were starfish walking around on the sand near the water. Some were in tide pools but some were just strolling on the sand, very very very slowly. The ones that were on the sand we carefully relocated back to the ocean or a tide pool. Other people coming out to the beach were fascinated by the large amount of starfish and helped relocate the walkers to the water as well.
This was shot on the Outer Banks of North Carolina (specifically Corolla, NC) in early October 2012. Almost the exact same spot on the beach that a WWII mine washed up in late September 2017 (outerbanksvoice.com/2017/09/2...)
Also, to clear up the questions about the "foot" in the video. It's my son's foot and he was squatting down. He was 4 at the time of the video. Looks like a strange deformed thing but it's just a normal 4 year old's foot.

And if you're in a giving mood, please consider Buffalo Monkey's recommended organization: www.gorillas.org/
For proof that this is indeed my video, the original upload of it in 2012 (with horrid static in the audio) is here:

Hi everyone! Zeb here, the guy that took the video. WE PUT THE STARFISH IN THE WATER. We did not take them out of the water, we found them walking/stranded on the beach at low tide and put them back into the ocean or tide pool. I took the video before putting that one back in the water because it was such an unusual sight. All the starfish (sea stars) we found alive on the beach were still alive when we put them back in the water. Just wanted to get that out there as many comments showed concern. The full details are in the description. Feel free to ask me anything below, though I'm not going to respond to everything and this was 5 years ago so I might not be able to remember some details.

Thank you! As hard as it is to believe some people dont understand that sea stars can become stranded like dophins or other large aquatic animals.

We had no idea what was going on at first. We were all really confused but then realized that for some reason they were washing in and getting stuck in the sand. Some were just chill in the sand but many were trying to walk around and I assume get back to the ocean. There were a lot in tide pools as well and we just left them alone assuming they would be fine when the tide came back in. You can hear my wife in the background of the video since this was when we first got to the beach, and we were amazed at what we were seeing.

I'm very glad to read that this filmer quickly put this starfish back into the water after briefly filming. Starfish dry out and die rather quickly, if they are not returned to the water, just as any other fish will. They can breathe air only for a very short time, as they naturally breathe water. Starfish are only on the sand, if they have been accidentally stranded by an outgoing tide. Please rescue any starfish you see on the beach, by gently putting them back in the sea. They do not bite or sting. I've rescued hundreds this way.

Fun fact: those little legs are more commonly known as “tube feet”, and they are present in all members of phylum Echinodermata. When a starfish or sand dollar is sticking to a rock underwater, that’s because the tube feet are using hydraulic pressure to create a pretty powerful suction! Echinoderms are some of the coolest little creatures, their adaptations and evolutionary history are really fascinating.

Thanks for this post. As soon as I started watching this, my earworm started to play the theme song from Star Trek: Enterprise. 😂 For those who don't know what I mean by "earworm," it refers to when your brain plays music in your head. Sometimes our brains pick random tunes from our memories. Other times, something we see, hear, smell, taste, feel, or think about will trigger a tune from our memories. I have had a very active earworm for my whole life, except for about 3 months from midway through this past December through midway this past March. In mid December there was a 21 hour power failure. For that ENTIRE 21 hours my earworm played the sound of a working refrigerator. 😂 After that my earworm stopped working for the next 3 months. I thought it was permanently broken until it slowly started working again in mid March. It's about 2/3 of the way through April now, and my earworm is still not as active as it used to be, but it's still providing me with some laughs. 😄

*Hey guys, Jotaro here. I'll be writing my thesis on this neat starfish I found walking on sand. As you can see, it has a lot of little legs, and it moves slowly. It can also curl up its limbs at will, which is pretty freaky if you ask me. I saw it on the beach a couple days ago, and I just had to write about it. It seems pretty harmless unless it secretly harnesses the power of a stand. Weird concept. Hard to explain. Anyways, thanks for reading, and I'm hoping that you'll get my degree to me soon since my mom, Holly, will pester me nonstop if I dont get it. Jotaro Out.*
