Just need to satisfy the nerd in me, the quote used by Teal wasn’t technically about the Death Gliders but the Needle Threader fighter variant used as part of the rescue of the remanded of SG-1 from Hathor.
@casbot71
@casbot71 5 лет назад
Ah yes, was hoping someone would mention those, great craft. If they'd made that the standard it would have opened up so many strategic and logistic possibilities. Minor revolt, just spam them through a Stargate and overwhelm the rebels. Unless they can coordinate a number of worlds at once you can focus superior forces without waiting to hyperspace a carrier. And in System Lord vs Lord battles they make a great surprise attack and enable quick reinforcements. Hope SpaceDock does a video on that variant.

Yes it's the one were they are offering to arm a resistance group. Odd choice of weapon for that episode though, while the SGC using a PDW like the P90 makes perfect sense, it wouldn't be the fist choice for arming a resistance group that is deliberately going into battle. It's quite a complex weapon from a maintenance point of view and it was designed for support personnel and vehicle crews who aren't expecting to see combat but still need to defend themselves.
@TheArklyte

Like the Staff Blaster, the Death Glider was a weapon of intimidation and not of war. It was mainly manufactured to oppress primitive people, not go to war with people who can meet them in the air for combat. They were even easily dispatched by MANPADS like the FIM-92A Stinger missile.
@weldonwin

@chrisloUSA

weldonwin Couldn’t agree more.
@weldonwin
@weldonwin 5 лет назад
The Jaffa had a lot of questionable weapons and equipment, since not only were the Goa'ould looking to terrify primitive slaves, they were trying to avoid giving the Jaffa anything too formidable in case they ever rose up. For example, Jaffa units on the ground communicate in battle using War horns, to signal one another, when the Goa'ould do have personal communication technology, that would allow Jaffa to communicate between units clearly and quickly without passing their communications to literally everyone in earshot of the big horns.
@TheAkashicTraveller
@TheAkashicTraveller 5 лет назад
@@weldonwin Which would make sense if they actually maintained better equipment somewhere to do so but it doesn't seem like they did, outside of a few random one offs. I guess they just went so long without needing it that they dropped/forgot about it.
@weldonwin
@weldonwin 5 лет назад
@@TheAkashicTraveller Well, the Needle Threader fighter, was just dumped in some undergrowth and forgotten about until Braytak and Teal'q came along and just literally pulled the vines off it. Even so, given how much the System Lords fought with one another, surely someone would have thought it'd be an advantage to equip their Jaffa with something better than a Horn for communication. I look at the System Lords and I see rulers who are very paranoid and insecure in their rule and are simply afraid to give their underlings anything more advanced and keep all the best tech for themselves, like the communication globes and personal shield devices.

Both the Galactic Empire in Star Wars and The Goauld Empire in Stargate preferred to use terror as the means of control. It's no surprise that their primary fighters are designed mainly to terrorize. Both are unshielded fighters that can be fielded in huge numbers.

@thijsjong

If you can take it down with 20 mm rounds. Any jet fighter will do. Horrible rate of fire. Bad accuracy. Targetting systems? And the plasma bolts fired don't seem to go faster then what a F-16 gatling gun fires. Looks like what you ll get when you fire a unguided misile pod. Reminds me of the Battle Star Galactica original series cylon fighters. Like tie fighters with stormtroppers in the pilotseat. Only upside is the detachable stafweapons that can be used by heavy infantry. The kind of ground attack/bombercraft a complacent empire would make after centuries of lack of serious opposition.

@BrokenCurtain 5 лет назад
@@TheArklyte it has no fast-firing weapons or missiles and can only attack targets that can be seen by the pilot - that means, a few hundreds yards at most. These things are basically useless during the night or when it's raining. Modern-day RL fighter jets can shoot down enemy aircraft that are kilometers away. The Jaffa piloting those death gliders wouldn't even see what hit them.
@TheArklyte
@TheArklyte 5 лет назад
@@BrokenCurtain except Spacedock is making an assumption here and you're just going by misunderstanding even that. Especially parts about Tealcs complaint, being half crewed and "lack" of targeting. When used by SG-1 it suddenly starts shining. And it was used in those conditions you've described too. Goa'uld DO have advanced sensors(you wouldn't be able to travel in space otherwise). We see it in the very start of the series when they immediatly detect launch of two ICBMs and then observe them until those hit the ship without any effect. It lacks guided munitions like rockets and missiles, that's what the part about computer targeting means. Not ALL forms of targeting. Cannons are gimballed and targeted by neural system for f//cks sake! Yeah, we had those in every WWII fighter, you know. So yes, it's limited to short range weaponry... surprising for a dedicated fighter, right? Don't mistake something that isn't shown for not being there. We haven't seen humans sh//t during TV series too, want to make a statement about this? Alternate reality biology maybe?
@TheDjbz
@TheDjbz 5 лет назад
Thing is they never had to be good they just had to be flashy. When fighting amongst themselves the System Lords didn't care about Jaffa losses. In fact the more casualties the better as far as they cared (less full grown symbiotes to get hosts for/fight for power etc) And what else did they fight? Guys with bows and arrows, *maybe* a catapult at best? Nothing that could even threaten them. So as far as the Jaffa are concerned only the weapons of "the gods" can bring down another. And it worked for thousands of years without issue. Until that one fateful day when Daniel Jackson figured out how to dial a stargate.
@TheArklyte
@TheArklyte 5 лет назад
@@TheDjbz ok, I'll just copy paste my comment from neighbouring chain: "bad accuracy? Neural interface, gimballed mount, dedicated gunner and plasma bolts that DON'T lose most of their velocity in a blink of an eye as well as sporting enough power to cause dust plumes of similar size to 102mm mortar when hitting the ground? That thing can get to Mach 3 and turn any way it wants. Any moderately good pilot would just boom zoom your ass from stratosphere and evade your dear AIM-120's with no trouble. But once again, being half crewed by untrained Jaffa sh//ts all over the picture:(" That thing literary has only one weakpoint - lack of trained crew. Do you know a lot of fighter aircraft that can hover, reach Mach 3 probably even when going "candle" ie straight up completely vertically, reach orbit and just keep going? How many of them outside Ace Combat and anime?;) Even by sci-fi standarts this thing is no pushover.

FWIW, I believe the in-universe explanation on why the Goa'uld tech sucks so badly is that like any other empire, they've gotten complacent and so bogged down in bureaucracy, they can no longer field effective weapons platforms without them going vastly overbudget and sideways. Also, they didn't build much of their technology (in particular the Stargate system). Rather, they inherited it from the Ancients who had originally constructed it and then abandoned it. So they're just using whatever junk they found lying around and they may or may not know how to really develop or advance it further. They've obviously stagnated over the span of many millennia and have lost the capacity for innovation, as they mostly just go around bullying agrarian and hunter-gather societies.

I find it funny how the system lords only made custom ships when the stargate program was made(not hating on the show I love it and will never criticize it)

Since we're talking space egyptians and crescent-shaped ships... may I recommend the Necrons (40k)? Perhaps a Cairn-class tombship, or a Night Scythe? =3

But can it do a hammerhead stall? And it didn't seem to fare well against f-15s.
