The main problem was that the mission, basically the "purpose" of the show, wasn't stated until season 2. Structurally, that's a hard sell. Many people _still_ base their thoughts on season 1, unfortunately, despite the series shifting dramatically in season 2
@@christina113704 it's a mix of both, theres military personnel and civilians. You should give at least episode one a try if you like the stargate series as a whole. Doesn't beat sg1 and atlantis but its still pretty good, i wish they continued it tho.
I love this show... a little more gritty than the kind of thing I was used to, but it really grew on me. Plus, I love love LOVE Robert Carlyle. Really a shame that the show didn't last.
Brad Wright is apparently talking to MGM, and Joe Mallozzi is really trying. They really really want to make more stargate, it’s just a matter of who will fund them. There’s still hope. There were two highly successful tweet storms that brought awareness that new stargate is something people want.
The biggest problem with this is that the whole thing became blindly focused on ship politics and basically became a scene from Battlestar Galactica, which gets stale fast.At least SG1 and Atlantis had a nice dynamic with showing new places, people, and artifacts, as well as having a broader vision. Though nobody wanted a look back into the past with Origins, so I guess it's better than that. lol
SGU was definitely different, Funny enough I was introduced to stargate totally backwards. Stargate 1994, SGU, SG-1, SGA. but after watching the rest of stargate, Universe is definitely a massive departure from it's predecessors, however it's something that can definitely be appreciated when separated into it's own Idea which is what it was trying to be. Sure it took a lot of Inspiration from BSG but it didn't feel like a blatant ripoff. I find that the handheld camera placements both on Destiny and for CGI based scenes adds to the realism, this show feels real, the characters feel real and you connect with them, not that this didn't happen in SG-1 or SGA, they just wasn't comparable to SGU, the reason they focus on politics is because there's a growing dispute between Camile and Colonel young that was supposed to sprout into something much bigger, Camile simply focused on politics and nothing else, she didn't seem to care about the long lasting effect of her decisions, she was impatient and impulsive and refused to understand the stakes in a given situation. People complained that SGU had a slow start but honestly I think its the best beginning of anything in this series. They wanted to capture the desperation of these people, they showed what they had to go through just to get breathable air, water, food, and they did it in a realistic way because the series was trying to create real people, with real needs and real personalities, you have to come at SGU at a different angle in order to fully appreciate it, but believe me it pays off.
It was such a good plot! And although the style was different yes, it worked perfectly for the setting. The same as the action/comedy emphasis worked well in SG-1, the drama more serious approach suited SGU. I miss it so much 😭
What made people dislike it was precisely what made me like it - it was decidedly different. SG1 was great, had a fantastic run and never really got boring, repetitive or uninteresting. Atlantis was different enough to make it "new", but still had a strong link to SG1, so it felt like leaving home and staying home at the same time. SGU gave us a strong departure from "let's not stray too far from what fans already know", and I feel it was truly time for that. Stargate in its inception was all about leaving what you know and expect about reality for something truly unknown and unexpected, and the only way to ever bring back the feeling of what the original movie and the SG1 series gave us, was to leave what they gave us for something even more unique, unknown and unexpected. Could it have been done better? Maybe, but _how?_ How would any of us have kept the storyline going without just doing more of the same thing? It was time to jump into the deep end of the pool, and I'm far more disappointed in the abrupt ending of SGU than anything they did with the story while they had it. In my mind, Eli Wallace is still out there, far far from home, watching after the Destiny while the rest of the crew sleeps, all of them hurtling forward in the vastness of the universe toward the greatest mystery of all.
Can't believe they ended this series, I found it brilliant, great actors storyline, with twist, well put together camera work awesome, it should be bought back!
Incredible show! Extremely detailed, and great acting, especially by lead man Robert Carlyle. I cannot wait for the second half of the season returning on April 2nd!
SGU was by far the best of the 3 series, was perfect in every way, perfect cast, perfect story, great suspense, it was filmed brilliantly, and was so so deep it was amazing, unfortunatly some people couldnt handle that.
It ended because the people where mad Atlantis got cancelled so they refused to Watch SGU. And it will be concluded in a Stargate Universe comic Before the Stargate Movie reboot.

It's a real shame that Stargate Universe was discontinued after only two seasons, there would have been so many interesting places to explore in the "Universe", maybe they would have even found enemies more powerful than the Goa'uld and the Ori. Maybe they would even have found an energy source that would have enabled a permanent connection of the 9 chevron, so that possibly even a base could have been built.
I love the character acting on this show, Robert Carlyle is just brilliant in his role, you just never know what he really wants...and the tension is amazing...this is top quality drama in a scifi setting, a true cross genre product.
destiny was by far the best of all stargate series, it really came into it's own towards the middle / the end of season 1 and season 2 was on a whole other level. absolute masterpiece. it is a real shame that some people didn't give it a chance past the first few episodes.
I just finished a Stargate marathon and finally watched SGU for the first time. It was the worst. I would finish watching an eps and it felt like it took 3 hours. This series was a serious departure from SG and felt more like Battlestar Galactica reboot. But at least I finally saw it. The best in order is SG1, SGA, SGO and then SGU. Yes SGO before SGU.
Yeah, SGU was by far the least enjoyable of the SG shows. It truly was just a painfully obvious and desperate imitation of Battlestar Galactica (which I didn't like either). Yuck.
I am watching now all the 3 shows for the first time. Although enjoyed a lot SG1 and Atlantis, Universe has the quality of a good movie. Plot, direction, photography, acting everything is great. I don't feel like I am watching an old TV show. I am very impressed.
There were a lot of very emotional moments in the old SGs. Many heart-wrenching moments that hit me hard and stayed with me. They just did it in a kind of shorthand so they could put more situation-driven plot in the episodes. (Very important for engaging sci-fi.) And that was all it needed. You don't NEED to see someone cry and act emotional for scene after scene, you just need to know their character and the situation and see an expression or two to understand how they feel.
@Liam P We are comparing Sci-fi shows so, yes we can compare them ;) Of course they're different, both are great, but overall BSG is still better. Don't get me wrong, I love SGU and I think it's best thing that could happen to SG universe.
I liked Stargate Universe. It had some great ideas, great actors doing great character work, and it was visually gorgeous (mild spoiler, there's a scene where they fly into a sun and it was absolutely breathtaking). That being said my first love of the series is and forever will be SG 1 and I think Universe was trying too much to be a different show like Battlestar Galactica. Universe took its sweet time building up the alien worlds, it had no major omnipresent threat to deal with like SG 1 and Atlantis, and it took the Battlestar route and focuses on the interpersonal relationships.
so true.. but i liked the change in the end.. first 5 episodes i was like what the hell is this crap but then it kinda suited me anyway.. ship traveling for so long so far and people stuck there fighting for their lives going thru the deep space.. the idea was pretty decent and nicely dark-ish

It was different to SG1 but i still liked it. The writing was so different and interesting. the mission of the Destiny was so captivating. No more English as the Lingua Franca of 3 galaxies xD.... Robert Carlyle was so good! I wish SG1, SGA and SGU would get sequels.
SG1 is more or less finished, the SGA less so, but the SGU definitelly needs some proper ending (although personally I wish for continuation of SG1 the most... I really want to know what's on P3K546). At any rate, when this show was airing I didn't really like it that much. I loved SG1 and especially SGA, but this was just way too different and not that action/story packed (they're mostly on the same ship, with SG1 and SGA they were at least mostly on other planets). After a second viewing it grew on me a bit more, however I still dislike that it tried way too much to be modern (sometimes weird camera work which worked for ship battles but not really for anything else, the soundtrack was interesting but nothing memorable, there isn't a single tune that you can memorize, etc. while with SG1 and SGA you have opening memorized and you remember at least goauld theme). But at least now I like the characters a bit more (before second viewing they seemed mostly uninteresting, except for Young and sometimes Rush), and I like the premise/story.
I always thought that the show got cancelled because the sci-fi fans couldn't cope with real characters who suffer, who are not heroes like in a fairy tale, who do the wrong things sometimes and fail sometimes, and are supsicious about each other and hate each other sometimes, who get into life threatening situations and actually have fear. The show was so suspenseful. Every episoede I got a heart atack. And I think it might be one of the best if not THE best Sci-fi show I'ver ever watched.
OK. I will say this. SGU has A LOT of potential. We have very little of pieces like this and I understand why someone don't like it. SGU has an amazing atmosphere, you can almost feel the smell of very old but advanced technology, the feel of cold in an old spaceship which is on its way for millions years far away. Discovring planets and creatures, that because of its distance is very different. But why someone wouldnt like it. I get it even I in a scifi show don't want a cuts that has nothing about to do with scifi. And I think that is the only thing that bothered many. But this show is a master piece. I would say it objectively. Even if I would not an SG fan.
Just bought the season 1 dvd box set and have watched 4 episodes so far. I can safely say that the negative comments are from people who can't accept a change from SG-1 style of Stargate to the Universe style of Stargate. They want everything to be the same and are ready to bash all that doesn't fit in their point of view of the show. There's nothing wrong with Universe - it's a different show. If you can't deal with that that's fine, but don't say it's crap just because YOU don't like it.
I think the main reason this series failed was because of the way it was made and the timing of when it was made. It started right as Atlantis ended and I think a lot of people saw it as a replacement. Also by the time this series aired a lot of people were beginning to to move from watching tv live to streaming it the next day which really hurt its ratings.
Man, SGU took stargate to another freaking level. Sg-1 was for kids......and I was a kid when I started watching it. Now that I've grown up, I watch sg-1 for nostalgia, but watch SGU cos I actually wanna know what happens.
For some odd dorky reason I never watched any Stargate episodes. One day I was sifting through Netflix and decided to try out SGU. I was hooked! Definitely going to check out the other series now!!

This trailer is pretty misleading, the show was actually pretty deep, while this trailer makes it look like another mainstream teen drama, and whoever chose that music should be fired. The show was actually really good and I really hope that it returns someday. Something tells me that this show was ahead of its time and that's why it didn't do well in the ratings; this show was on the cusp when fantasy/sci-fi shows where breaking away from the typical filming, story writing, character types and production style of that time, sort of like how tokusatsu shows are split up in showa(old/retro) and Heisei(recent/modern) eras. Even though i was a fan of some of the shows in the "Old/Retro Shows" list: it is a bit campy, which is fine. Overall I like good story telling and interesting characters.
As a super Battlestar Galactica fan who watched this without watching SG1 and Atlantis, I loved it. It felt like seeing an old friend. I couldn't understand what all the SG1 fans were so mad about and why they hated it. After watching all of SG1 and Atlantis I kinda understand. This aint your father's Stargate series. I loved them all but I definitely appreciate how vastly different they are from this.
Yeah..I have always been reluctant to watch Battlestar Galactica or Stargate. BUT tried Stargate Universe and LOVED IT ! You are right, fans want everything to look similar to the "original" one. But to me, this can be "my original" one so, I will evaluate all other SG franchise based on this first one...

Unfortunately, SGU's first season was more like Lost or Big Brother set in space than a sci-fi series it claimed to be. But when it was finally beginning to improve during the second season (I loved the finale), they cancelled it. Darn. I'd still love for it to continue instead of a stupid 1994 Stargate reboot, but I'd prefer an SGA/SG-1 continuation.

I stuck around until it started getting a bit more like Stargate and was genuinely getting good, but by that time it was a bit too far into the show. It's a shame, as it had some great promise. I think the long build up is what defeated it in the end.
I'll disagree with You... Very, veeeery much... Because SG:U is the best Stargate since original movie and even maybe better than movie itself. Whole plot was a piece of art in comparison to others Stargate shows. This is how Atlantis should look like. Especially first season. They are stuck on broken ship without any ways of going back. Without supply line. They cannot access any vital data or system. If someone die there will be less of them. Less people with distinctive skills or knowledge. People don't joke around that much because They're in very bad situation. Also there is some small focus on crew's psyches since They are onboard dark, "sad" ship. Another thing: There wasn't any Carter/McKay-like character who was able to perform miracles and save everyone from every situations. And I'm not even talking about more non-human aliens speaking something else than english, special effects, sceneries from Destiny and planets on destiny course or this big mistery about message from the beginning of time.

I heard that people complained it wasn't as good as the other shows because of how realistic the characters were. I think that they were just creative with personality and character interactions in the first 2 incarnations, and more realistic in this incarnation. Which by the way, took me a while to get used to but really enjoyed it. I hear they're going to make a 4th incarnation called Stargate: Origins, hope it's true!

I never watched SGU because I was upset for the Atlantis unending, even if I'm an hardcore fan of SG1 only, because I don't like space-ship drama and because they said they was making something for a younger public with more romance and drama and I imagined it would have been something between Lost (I loved Lost but I cant'stand cheap copies of Lost that are coming out) and a teen drama. Lately I've been missing Stargate series verse too much so I was deciding to watch SGU and so I've come here for the trailer. In the trailer a lot of drama and kisses and cheap mysterious atmospheres, it's actually a commercial teen drama. LOL I've changed idea again, I won't ever watch it and I'm thinking it deserved the end that it had. I can't believe they made this to Stargate.

I AM into sci-fi and especially space exploration. In fact, so much so that I got my degree in Aero/Astro from MIT with the intent of becoming a NASA mission specialist, until my eyesight got so bad I was no longer qualified. I even have a friend/classmate who until a little over a year ago held the record for most time spent in space (by an American). I can unequivocally say that for all of the sci-fi shows that I've seen, SGU is by far the most realistic portrayal of what life in space would be like, of course, given the pretense of inheriting ancient technology that provides us superior advances in space travel. However, these pretenses exist in all of the SG shows. SGU even deals with actual space sciences, like star and planet classifications, calculating orbital trajectories, etc... The other shows are just action/adventure series, sometimes set in space. The characters here remind me of real people, not heroic archetypes, like the kinds I dealt with when I was in the Air Force, working daily with both other military and civilians. Their interactions are uncanny. Don't even get me started on aliens who are all human and are fluent in American English.
It was stopped because of the decreasing ratings and viewers. It's the script writers faults, it started well, but then decayed into painfully boring and annoying earth based drama with characters nobody gave a shit about... Stick to the frigging plot, the craft is 700 million light years from earth.. YOU CANT CONTACT EARTH, and we don't care about what goes on, on earth.
I'll never forgive Syfy and MGM for driving a stake through the heart of the SG franchise by making this crappy series. It more than anything destroyed the fanbase. If I wasn't already a fan of SG1 and Atlantis I would not have watched this piece of shit. The point was clearly to try to return to the original "go through gate to unknown worlds" premise, but the constant on-edge atmosphere, weird cast and the never ending DRAMA (there is actually a whole episode filled with flashbacks about a woman and her lesbian lover back on Earth) made the series into a joke to original fans. The love triangles, and the pointless betrayals are just silly. This series has more in common with One Tree Hill than any SG-series before it. So - unless you're into drama - stay away from this thing.
The character of Dr. Rush almost drove me crazy. He was an unshaved uncut arrogant s.o.b., I wish he received more beatings from Col. Young, lol. Also, in almost every episode there was a logical inconsistency of some kind, if not, then they just talked way to much. I thought they would discover a lot of borg-like super-aliens and more, instead I had to listen to the endless quarrel of the crew, I can't believe how much this spin-off sucked compared to the brilliant SG1-SGA series! The "convenient" com-stones annoyed the hell out of me, they could take home the drama and make it into an Earth-based soap opera without the sci-fi part, the writers lost their freaking mind! And Dr. Rush, please get a good shaving and a haircut, thanks! lol

He wasn't idiotic type of character like Carter or McKay who was able to resolve every problem without spare parts and without anybody dying. This show was a "procedural" just like SG1 and SGA. What did You expected form it if not people talking with each other or talking to each other while repairing things...?...? You obviously do not understand the idea of character development, and the type of story this was. Young was an amazing character, specifically because he was not a good leader. Besides Eli and Young, none of them were meant to be there. Their flaws where a huge party of the character development and story.
shibbyobibbyo they were great shows, but you said it best when you said they were complex "enough." Both earlier shows never demanded much from their characters. When you say the characters in Universe were assholes and incompetents it shows you do not understand the very idea of the show. The entire point was that unlike the other two shows, this was not a group of amazing heroes who were the best humanity had to offer. They were the wrong people who were stranded in an impossible situation. Unlike the earlier two shows they were not given a simple enemy to make the bad guys. Absolutely everything about Universe was a higher quality show than most things on TV these days.
Also for those who think SG:U is dull, well it might be for you but it's actually really interesting. I mean really, how many times can you watch "Human vs. Alien X" (Ori, Wraith, Replicator, System-Lords) before it becomes redundant? SG:U takes into account the fact that at some point humans will discover places that aren't populated by hostiles and are more about adapting than combat... Also SG:U never failed to surprise me with things like the "Solar Flare" episode and the Keno.
Through the last year, ive been watching all episodes/movies chronollogically from sg1 to sgu, and, imo, SGU is a great show. Nothing beats the first half of SG1, but i find SGU to be a different and pleasing aproach to the SG world. Personnally, i didnt find SGA that good. yeah, it was fun, but not as interesting as SGU is proving to be. I think that quitting the episodical type of series creates room for a much more interesting story, with a better developed storyline and characters.
That is also what sets it apart. I would like if they continued Atlantis or sg1 also... but I like the change is SGU, it also makes sense that the atmosphere in SGU is more depressive. I think it would be cool if they did the same thing as when Atlantis aired after SG-1 around the same time.
I believe SGU is by far the best Stargate television show to date. By far better than both SG1 and SGA. It just takes time to get used to the approach that was taken with the series. I've so far watched the whole first season on Blu Ray and overall i think its a far superior show.
