That’s not just normal CAT6 cable - it’s outdoor rated, shielded (foil shielded) cable to help protect equipment from lightning strikes etc. this is why the connector has a metal frame on it.

Kinda made it sound like "lower speed means better latency" which is not true. Latency is based on quality of the connection (cable type vs wifi band) not the speed... For those wondering.

Where I live (in NZ) we're about 2km away from a fibre point but the people who lay fibre have no plans to extend it from there. So our options are ADSL (maximum 15Mbps up, ~1Mbps down) or Starlink (which currently is about 50 bucks more expensive at minimum)

With FTTH, you would be getting 200ms if you are connecting to a server in Japan from the US. A speed test by default will connect you to the closest server hence the low latency while a starlink connection will have much better advantage with intercontinental coverage. A starlink connection from US to Japan will be less than 100ms because of lesser physical routing as opposed to FTTH which would have to follow more complex routes. I think a more I depth explanation will help in choice based on requirements

Starlink is really meant for people out in remote areas. If you live in an area that has access to fibre, it's a no brainer... I think eventually (many years from now) there will be servers floating in space and gaming on a starlink type system will probably be very good.
@VengFPV
@VengFPV 3 года назад
I have "fibre" but my location means I actually only get 5 down/1 up (on a good day..) so Starlink is my only hope. Only issue is I do play online games sometimes, so may hook up my desktop to both connections and only enable the fibre one when needed.
@mattwhite995
@mattwhite995 3 года назад
Seems there are def use cases for Starlink. Would be good if you could do a video on the race between FTTP and Starlink over the next 5 years. Openreach say 25mil properties will have access to FTTP by the end of 2026 (think that's about 80%). do you think FTTP will win out over the launch of 12000 satellites in that timescale? do you think latency will ever match FTTP (I get 3-5ms consistently on FTTP). also there's lots of talk about symmetric speeds but what are your thoughts on that, does it really matter or is asymmetric perfectly fine when its ultrafast speeds?

I've just moved into my new home and planned for Virgin to come install their fibre broadband. Unfortunately, they told me I can't have this as our property is too far and requires 14m of underground digging, which they won't do. I then checked with Openreach and again, no fibre is available. Can anyone help on how I can get good broadband? I don't want ADSL as 10mbps and 1mbps upload will just not cut it as myself and my partner both WFH and need good internet.

I'm ten meters away from Virgin and they wont connect me either. I've bought a Huawei router. Put £10 per month sim in, and covered the house with mesh repeaters. Result: about the same download speed download as bt can offer (30mb) upload is about 10mb, which is faster that bt. It's not great and it does drop out occasionally, but it's this ir satellite, and i cannot afford that.

Take my situation for example: I line in Nigeria and I have good FTTH with about 100mbps with IPNX. If I do a steep test, I get an average of 2 - 8ms latency, which is good right? In reality, when I'm gaming online, the closet server is in the middle East for both Apex legends and COD. This increases my latency to 108ms minimum and 100ms on a very good day. The same is applied to alot of gamers that are limited by geographic locations because if I was to switch to starlink, my latency will reduce significantly to the lower 50s because of the lesser distance to the server. This is where starlink completely outshines any other form of Internet connectivity.

you could get a 4g lte router, basically like your mobile phone's data you can get a sim card on a contract just for the router and get pretty good speeds (~100mbps down, ~15 up is what i usually get) with unlimited data. latency isn't the best but it's not too bad. the only issue i'm having with mine is that i have reset it often to not lag a lot when gaming online shooters and whatnot. general browsing and content consumption is brilliant though.

In London (the most dense city) u get up to 80mbps occasionally. Usually no problem to be around 40mbps. In small towns due to lack of signal towers and low bandwidth of 4G network u can be as low as 1mbps in some bad spots (when theres lot of hills around, something coastal towns suffer from). But in general UK's infrastructure is years behind EU. Just now they are working hard on upgrading the centuries old copper lines with fiber cables. Majority of UK is limited to 80mbps at home due to those copper lines....Only Virgin Media managed to push the copper up to 300mbps in some parts with combination of copper and fibre. Bigger cities do have gigabit available but only in some parts. Until recently there was only few choices for ISP provider (BT, VM, SKY, EE....). Now theres lot of gigabit companies popping up everywhere. *TLDR; UK is placed 21st in Mobile netwrok speeds and 47th in Broadband speeds on world ranking on Speedtest.*
