I just got the Starlink package today. I had an issue I thought I should relate. I am in the northern hemisphere so expected a northern view which I had. I mounted the base first. I didn't notice until it was screwed down that there was a keyway. The keyway was to the south. I hooked everthing up and waited for it to hook up and I waited and I waited. I started to think "is that keyway important?" Maybe the head doesn't rotate 360 degrees? It is possible. So I went back up the ladder and removed the head and turned the base 180 degrees. Turn the power back on and it hooked up in seconds. Long story short the keyway is important apparently and it doesn't say that anywhere that I saw. If you are in the northern hemisphere put the key on the north end and on the south end if in the southern hemisphere. Maybe I am wrong about something but that is my experince first day. It now works and it is fast and that is all I care.
Good information, thanks. I was unaware as when we unstowed the unit is turned and did it’s thing. We are way north so figured if it was going to look anywhere, it was going to be south.
Still sucks that the equipment price when we first signed up was $499 and the monthly was going to be $105 a month…..2 1/2yrs later when our turn finally came the equipment was up to $549, $50 shipping fee, and it’ll be $120 a month. We almost changed our minds with the price but we’re so desperate for good internet we caved and went for it lol
Mine came in today 700.00 and 120.00 a month for northern Missouri, ( in the middle of nowhere Mo. ) we have really no options, so I went for it, very pleased, amazing results, you either got great internet or the other choice is not very good at all, I’m glad I did it.
Awesome.. I am in Montana and have CenturyLink, possibly the worst provider in the land, so Starlink is now available in Montana.. I had to stop doing my YT channel because a 30 min upload took 6 hours.. so I am soooo interested in getting this. Thanks so much.
Yeah, we have a few radio carriers around here but they never live up to expectations. I just want a carrier who works and it’s something in the background and I don’t worry about.
I also have centurylink.. 2 is the highest they will give me at my house. Hoping this thing works better as I love gaming on pc just centurylink wires have degraded but I’m terrorfied of satellite! After experiencing hughs net it scares me!! If you got it how is it so far??? Thank you c:
We have been waiting for ours for over a year+ (guessing) down here in Lafayette, LA USA. Just received unit today and watched your video before i opened the package. Extremely excited, as my upload speeds for over 5 years have been 7-10Mbps and uploads at 0.6 - 2 Mbps if I'm lucky! Thanks for the video!
We live in Columbia,la and have been waiting on list for a year and finally getting it this week.hoping it will be ok but has to be better than hughesnet.
Bro! It was so easy!! I’m here now, middle of nowhere, no cell, no cable, no nothing… and starlink is faster than Xfinite at home! I haven’t tested the range to the barn yet cause it’s been raining…. It I was thinking, I have a outdoor plug that’s close to the house and a little closer to the barn with no obstructions, I might build a little waterproof spot for it there if need be… My dish is not even in a good spot(according to the app) and it works flawlessly, have not had one single interruption of any kind so far. I need to get the longer cord tho, I haven’t looked at the store yet, can you connect the 2 cords together, or it’s one or the other? I feel like I want more than 150…unless I do my starshed idea then I can use the 75…
I have added a second router to my system for extended range ( Linksys with custom firmware). You would need to get the Ethernet cable adapter, and for more range the longer 150 cable as you cannot connect them.
@@RedBarnHomestead sounds like what I need to do, however I am VERY technologically challenged… hoping one of my more “techy” buddies will be able to guide me…I appreciate your info, but time it’s like reading a different language :/
@@RedBarnHomestead sir, I hate to be so needy, but as I said the other day, I’m very technologically challenged, can you make a short video on this starlink range extension subject and how exactly you did it, I can’t be the only one that needs or wants you to hold my hand and explain like I’m a kindergartner…it’s probably something I should already know, but again, I don’t do a lot of technology stuff at all, you should see my cell phone(which doesn’t work very well with starlink so far, this new iPad tablet I’m on does tho)
@@mikewordsworth325 no, not in my experience so far, and I’m in Northern California where we just had a few weeks of pretty good storms… I figured out my range issue too, parts are coming..
I guess if you don't have cable or fiber, it's a good option. I get unlimited 350 Mbps internet from my local cable provider for $80.00/month. And yes, it works in power outages for at 24 hours anyway. Starlink wants $600 for the equivalent and $120/month for much slower speed, but because of the latency, gaming is not a good experience with StarLink.
@@RedBarnHomestead Great deal for you then! When I moved here in 2006, we didn't have cable or fiber. The best we had at that time was DSL, which was painfully slow. I know a few people with StarLink and they're generally satisfied. A friend recently switched from Hughes Net to StarLink and she's happy with it too
Great video! Much thanks! Very...VERY rural & only option is .*** Mbps (embarrassing). Question please, should we worry about damage from ice rain & hail?
The only thing I worry about is hail honestly, but we’ve had it for 2 years and haven’t had any damage yet, but no crazy hailstorms either. I have often wondered if being able to cover it quickly would be worth it, but that of course would only work if I was around.
Thanks for keeping it simple and straight. I noticed nothing like screws were used to affix the base to its support. So how would one ensure the base is tightly fixed to maintain a firm hold of the dish? What's the extension mechanism of the network?
We just got ours! We live in Rural Northeastern Ontario and we were pretty impressed with how fast it shipped from California. A little over 2 weeks. Can't wait to set it up this weekend.
Our place in line FINALLY came up. We’ve only been waiting since February 13, 2021 on the pre-order wait list!!!! 😂 Our box arrives tomorrow. With a 2 1/2yr wait I sure hope we get the awesome high speed it promises. We’ve been stuck with horrible internet from the one and only company that offered us a whole 10Gb on a good day lol…..speed test usually shows it going up and down between 1gb-7gb and upload oh lord we’re talking kbps…..one game can take almost 2 days to download. We are looking forward to having our apps and games run without lagging and our service constantly disconnecting when more than two people are connected at once. It’s going to be like Christmas around here! Fingers crossed 🤞
Looking forward to an update, I'm about an hour from Edmonton and my starlink just came today. I also had a telus smarthub because it was the only option here, at its fastest it was 20mbps down and 1mbps up but the average was 15mbps down and 0.5mbps up.
Yes, completely in the same boat! So far the thing has been swinging fast even when it gets down to 40 Mbps, its fantastic. Uploads are crazy, but fairly slow uploading to RU-vid so I'm guessing I'm hitting the slowdown on their server side.
Do they sell mounting hardware for a pole where my huges Internet dish was? The Star link web site does not have a customer service number... Is it possible the star link dish can be kept inside and the signal would pass thru the roof? I live in a windy area...I can't just leave it unattached
Well, for everyday use, unnoticeable. We don't have any gamers here, but compared to all the internet providers we have had, its speed trumps all else. All streaming services, video calls, you name it seem to work excellent.
All AI dependent with no service. I received my equipment and it failed in a few days. They sent me more equipment but sent to wrong address 8 hours away from me. After 30 more days they sent more equipment. It has been 4 days and I still cannot get a connection. The security key was not included with new equipment. There is no security key on my windows network connection, I tried the numbers on bottom of modem. So, It has been 2 months since I bought Starlink and I have had 5 days of service
Well it’s good to see the other side of the coin. Our service has been easy, everything worked outside of the box and that was that. Security key is the same for all equipment by default, so that should have been too hard to manage.
Can anyone explain why I can NOT order Starlink from the Starlink web site. It continually tells me : Something went wrong on our end. Please wait and then try again. when I try to order. Thanks in advance.
I had Hughes Net (UGH) and then switched to DSL (Semi-Ugh!) I live in a rural area on a hill, with no trees on my property, but wooded areas across the road and up a hill. My question is: I still have the Hughes Net pole and dish-they only wanted the camera back when I closed the account - so could I possibly use that pole to mount the Starlink dish to?
You can use the pole they put the Hughes Net on, but it would require an adaptor you could by from Starlink or build yourself. Our unit tends to point more straight up than anything, but of course yours will vary.
Excellent presentation. I do have 2 questions: 1) Does phone service come included in the home internet service. 2) If you install the dish on top of your house, what will you do about snow buildup on it? Thanks, Ben Pellom
I can't even get past the sign in for the Google Play app. Which means I cannot even start to install the hardware. I just keep getting "please sign in" messages. Sign in to WHAT? Until I 'sign in' it won't let me progress.
Awesome video!! I just bought Starlink for my cabin north of Ft Smith NWT which now has coverage. Wondering if I need internet connection on my phone in order for the app to work? I obviously don't have that out there as to why I bought this. Also, how did you connect your tv to this, was it the $35 box you mentioned or do you mirror from a device. The Bell Mobility in Edmonton was a bit confusing, we have shaw in Edmonton, can I connect to that?
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think you need a connection while setting it up. I would download and sign into the app, but after that, once you plug in the unit, you will connect to it's wifi and go from there. It should come pre-connected to your account, so once it hooks up, you're in. They use these things at sea, and there is no internet out there for sure.
Great video and instructions . Thank you very much. Do you think there will be problems with the satellite antenna over a long time? Because it always has to realign itself and the mechanism could eventually break down after some years or so.
I don’t recall seeing it move when in operation, once it is set it has a range of pickup without moving. It will move is programmed to for catching other satellites. No, we’ll lose our unit to hail unless I come up with a solution.
Thanks for the video. Does it ask you the location when setting up. Thinking to buy it in Greece and bring it to Cyprus but it is not available in Cyprus yet but some people are saying it works everywhere?
Happy I found your channel! Looking forward to watching more of your content. I’m considering switching from telus hub to starlink too. There’s been a lot of crazy storms in Alberta this summer!! Would I be running outside all the time to cover the panel so it doesn’t get smashed?
Apparently you can put a plexiglass plate over the top that would stop most hail and the signal can get through. We’re going to try that because hail seems like it might be an issue.
that was the only thing holding me to move to a mountain and escape people going to a full introvert hahaha, going on top of the mountain in Banff hahaha.
Its been a year since you uploaded this video. What is your take(opinion) on Starlink? Do you still use this internet service? Do you recommend it? I live Central Michigan rural location. What about snow? Do you have to clean the snow off it all the time?
Love it 100% and still recommend it to all. We still use it (have a UPS so we even had internet during power outages, we have never had to clear our unit of snow as our snow tends to be dryer, but there is a built in heater to melt it off if required.
Understanding the plug on the dish side is fairly small, I drilled a hole in 3 walls and permanently installed the unit. I ended up building a stand and the dish is actually flush to the roof.
Oh, its hands down crazy fast. I know in the Eastern and Western US they have been having congestion issues, but up here towards the north in Central Alberta is been buzzing right along even durning peek usage. Can't imagine going back.
The whole point of starlink isn't its amazing speeds....which are amazing, but its ability to be anywhwere. Starlink does not compete with Fibre or Cable or even good DSL, but a lot of folks, like myself, have satilite, cellular, or radio as our only way to connect. Of these, Starlink rules them all. If you can get a land connection, great, do it, but if you are remote, it is by far the best service out there...if you can get it.
I have century link and works pretty well. I'm not drilling random holes in my home, not know what's on the other side. Fray some electrical wires and burn down everything you own.
Oh, sorry about that. If we lose our power at the house, our UPS keeps the starlink running. Since starlink never loses power, even with the power out we can cruise the internet on ipads and other battery devices. Our current UPS uses a 7aH lead acid battery and has floated us 2 hours easily.
@@RedBarnHomestead Thank you for the reply. I am going to a rental property that is not mine. The owner has given me one UN and PW, and I was wondering if that is all that is needed to set up the system.
Oh, there is a warning about it and we notice the speed difference too, it’s just their slow speed is twice as fast or faster than the best we could get on other carriers.
@@RedBarnHomestead Not a bad deal then!! I do have install like 100 Starlink Satellite and couple more hundreds in a bear future. I might look into getting one for my working vehicle.
I just confirmed my order today and it’s being processed for shipping. I’m a little worried, because where my new place is, there is no cell reception or anything, so I don’t know that I’ll be able to access the app for set up. Maybe I’m just worried about nothing… My neighbors up there said they all waited over 15 months for their sets, I got mine in less than 1.5 months… I’m excited to have contact with the outside world up there!
We know a guy who got starlink in his Montana hunting cabin. No civilization for miles, dense forest way up in the mountains. As remote as you can get in the US. Works like a charm, he connects his security system, laptops phone and tvs. It all works. Hearing that prompted us to order starlink immediately
I was a microwave technician (Master Sargent) in the USAF in 1974. Based on the radio frequencies STARLINK uses, it won't work in North America more than about 78% of the time (based on National Weather service reports)receiving dish
