As well as the third guy taking away the gun from the situation. And the woman coming from the isle was the perfect distraction for the cowboy to strike as well. Honestly some amazing teamwork in such a scary situation.

As soon as he turned away, he should have heard those boots, but he wasn't in the moment, he was terrified, which likely gave him blinders. They once he was pursued, he froze up, and that's how he was able to drop the gun. This is the difference between these coward and a true savage. He was the former.
