The sheer technical achievement on display here is staggering. I don't think many people expected that the GBA could be even remotely capable of something like this. -A
Yea, idk bout you but I much rather see someone use their strengths to do something they are truly passionate in rather than them using their strengths to land people on the moon.
The new camera makes a MASSIVE difference!! People securely underestimate how much the camera does for a game’s feel. It’s one of the absolute most impactful elements!
Agreed! That so many early 3D games had a fixed angle camera is unfortunate. One of the things that made SM64 so groundbreaking was the dynamism of its movement, and the camera was a big part of that. It's important to me that I replicate that same feeling here.
@@JoshuaBarretto Yeah! And the way the camera zooms and shakes during special animations like opening key doors or dying is still so uniquely high quality to this day. It’s wild that Nintendo’s first n64 game set the bar so high.
@@JoshuaBarretto the problem is that the player's control over mario's movement is relative to the current camera angle, so if the camera angle changes then mario starts changing direction too. this can be very annoying when the camera automatically and unexpectedly changes angle while the player is navigating a dangerous area. this can be solved either be having mario's (or any other character) movement direction instead tied to something other than the camera angle or by the camera angle only change when the player makes it change. it is not necessarily something to worry about in this project since this project is mostly just replicating the original SM64 experience rather than improving it or anything but i am just saying. i actually found this problem more noticeable in Gex: Enter the Gecko than SM64 but it is an issue in both.
This comment 100% on the mark. Sonic 1, 2, 3 are better games with widescreen, purely better and that’s completely true. My favorite cameras in video game history are the pikmin 1, 2, 3, and 4 cameras. They are freeing and forgiving yet limited, very elegant
it's really fun to imagine a 32 bit nintendo system that competed with the likes of Sega Saturn. This type of wacky project is probably the closest thing we'll ever get.
Mario 64 was probably the first video game I ever played as a toddler in 2003. It's a little hard to describe the sense of happiness I feel, seeing this game worked on in such a unique way with so much love. My jaw is officially on the ground, had no idea the GBA was capable of this
@@JoshuaBarretto that's me with creating music. doing it as a hobby with creative freedom and your own ways around things feels much free-er without deadlines and pressure I guess
@@JoshuaBarretto such a common story. Just released my game STREET UNI X and people are like "you could get a job in professional game dev!" and im like "why would I want that, i want to keep making games i think are cool more than I want to be on a big team with a high salary"
@@JoshuaBarrettonintendo hires you as lead programmer for under wraps switch 2 title, what do you do. Decline? For me it depends on how much crunch I’d have to endure and or willing to endure, I hope little
This is mind-blowing with how good this is! It really does feel like a 3D GBA game akin to Asterix & Obelix XXL, with how the 3D background sorta warps a little, and it's especially amazing to see an actual 3D game be replicated as far as this! If it somehow contained every, or even just several levels from the game, that would be even more impressive! Keep it up!
This would probably have sold like cupcakes back in the day. Please dont burn yourself out on this. This is amazing to see. Rather take it slow and steady than to go full throtle and crash yourself. Great work.
This is just incredible for a GBA game. Like it was already insane before, but each update just makes it look better and better. The fact this even runs on the console just boggles the mind...
We literally went from seeing Mario as a red blob in the screen,to seeing actually something that resembles a playable GBA version of SM64 in like what,a month and a half? I (and most of us really) am truly speechless...
To anybody that thinks its fake, take a look at some of the other 3D games on GBA - Namely StarX and Asterisk and Obelisk XXL, the system is capable of a lot more than you may initially think
It's Asterix & Obelix XXL, for clarification, and literally any handheld game made by the VD-dev duo is worth taking a lot at because they kept pushing the limits of the systems the made games for. R.I.P. M.Velez.
I'm dumbfounded. Lost for words to be honest that you've come this far with the project. It actually looks like the real game. I've been following since the beginning and you deserve a pint mate.
Dude... It's literally like SM64DS, or maybe, SM64 "SP", and the new mario model is crazy. It's a shame it will never be released, but this show that the GBA is a console with a lot of potential.
The more I work with the GBA, the more I've come to love it. It's right on the edge of many things being *only just* possible, and decent 3D graphics sit in that category.
Wow wow fantastic work keep it up!! This is one of those "Never thought I would see this" accomplishments. The movenemt is sooo much better! Glad you take the extra time to work on this aside from other life things.
I am most impressed by how smooth the movements look. 3D GBA games often tend to look really janky, not this one! Can't wait to see further updates to this project.
I remember holding a cartridge in my hand back in the day, super mario world, and I just couldn't believe that I used to play this on a bulky hardware. U barely appreciate how far we have come in terms of technology that small devices are simply capeable of this right now...
Yeah but some SNES ports looked worse in the GBA. Some effects and resolution looked worse. Not to mention the colors looked washed out. I noticed this with Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2 Yoshis Island and even the Mickey Mouse games
What a great achievement. I tried to port back in the days SM64DS to the PSP which was an epic fail but I see you're actually doing it for the GBA so I have no excuses.. Kudos bro
really liking how the game looks now, and the better animations make such a huge difference. Also the commentary youve added to the video makes it a lot more interesting im glad you decided to include it
I still can't wrap my head around the magnitude of your achievements with this project! Absolutely outstanding work, thanks for documenting your progress :)
The rasterization and texture-mapping is looking so much more visually appealing now, I'm genuinely impressed. I loved the blending effect it had before but I get how it could be grating on some people, so the improvement is nice.
This is actually insane, the progress on this truly makes me believe you'll be able to put the entire game (if not just huge chunk of it) in this, keep up the good work!
This project is improving so quickly even with the less time that you have to spend on this project. It’s also incredible seeing it run on a real GBA SP. Can’t wait to see what else gets added next!
Watching this improve so drastically from the beginning is insane. I didn't expect it to be possible to even get this far but you're the one who's got the skills!
Ever since i played asterix and obelix xxl on GBA i just *knew* that some crazy enough programmer could demake mario 64 with enough talent and time. I’m so glad you’ve been the one to pick up that challenge, it looks even better than i could have imagined!! Keep it up!!
Porting Mario 64 to what's essentially just a powered up SNES is unbelievable!, I've seen some really impressive 3D games on the GBA before, but nothing that is as mechanically complex and with so much content as mario 64 before
"Sorry life has been busy!" Proceeds to show massive improvements and adding voiceover and music to update video. Keep it up! This is still really cool.
Fantastic work! I have been fully invested in these updates and I am continually impressed. Awesome! Also, I love how all texture mapping reminds me of how the PS1 handled textures (warping)
I love seeing your work progress and improve as time goes by, watching each update is quite something. Great work once again, this project is really cool!
Wow.. ok my opinion has changed since the last video I saw. This is really coming along and is highly impressive. The amount of progress you've made since I saw it last is amazing. Well done
Amazing work so far! Really cool to see it playing on real hardware. I do hope someday you do make an original game using this engine, as you mentioned at the end.
I've been having a few ideas. Pushing the hardware to the limit is good fun, so I think it would have to be something a bit absurd. I'm thinking open-world, Bethesda-esque. Think Daggerfall, but with an interesting landscape. I don't know.
@@JoshuaBarretto Could you turn 2d games into 2.5D games? Not that theyd look great, but metroid fusion or zero mission with 3D backgrounds on original hardware would at least look... interesting.
I feel like the hud/sky and game world should probably be rendered at the same resolution, the noticeable disconnect between what you can see in the 3D world and on the hud/sky just feels a bit jarring IMO very minor nitpick though, overall this is crazy impressive
the modern day homebrew scene makes me so happy to be alive to witness, so much cool shit we could've only dreamed of 10-15 years ago that this has progressed to this stage as well in so little time, goddamn yo
Amazing work! Very inspirational don't worry too much about RU-vid quality as your video gets the point across very nicely looking forward to where else you will take this project.
There is severe texture artifacting and geometry artifacting for sure but that is to be expected for something like the GBA. Its still insanely impressive that you made this. Hats off to you sir you have done something truly special ❤
Oh, this This is beautiful It's only been 2-3 months since you made the first one, and it's really coming along nicely It seems that it might be a less glitchy game than the original The only glitchiness is the textures and not... everything else You're doing good.
Well, considering what I've seen from Saturn games, I imagine it could be ported to run pretty well, especially with new level models (take advantage of those quads instead of tris).
Its incredible how quickly this came along. I remember on a few months ago when Mario was just a little red triangle tryna make his way in this big 32bit world. Now he's all grown up, growing with his mustache. You done good 🥲
I have this running on a VERY SMALL screen. If you play this on a real resolution, The texture warping doesn't really make a difference to the graphics. It's pretty amazing.
I've been surprised by how much better it looks on the real hardware! You really don't notice the reduced resolution and the framerate looks much less choppy due to the ghosting of the LCD screen.
I do find it sad that this won't ever be released, but it's still cool to see someone stretch the limitations of the GBA. I wish you good luck on continuing this project, and any others later on!
This is incredible. I have no idea bow people like you get this good at programming but I'm so grateful for it. These kinds of peojects are always so fun to watch evolve
