Hey I dont know you guys are fans of any of the power ranger series but the the 8th installment of that franchise power rangers lost galaxy is a space race adventure to find another inhabitable planet for man kind to live on, and in that series there space military service borrows the starship troopers outfits for a couple of episodes in the beginning, middle and end of the series.

Very, VERY good practical effects go a long way, but for 1997 the CGI was amazing. There's always gonna be the cliche of "why did the effects look better then!" but I think that's to do with a lot of lazy VFX and over-used CGI now (because it's cheaper and easier now than ever before), but still today when CGI is used properly it's far superior. But this movie is totally my jam!
@williammobley9634

@@DiscoRaptor Less about lazy or over-used and more about so many movies using them today without a significant enough amount of growth in the workforce means that very few CGI houses are having to get more and more done on less and less time. So, you get stuff that's just too rushed.

The genius of hiding the political satire in plain sight is one of my favorite aspects of the film. In the beginning, when Rico is drawing on his tablet, go back and listen to Ironside’s words as he teaches the class. Most people tune it out just like the students, unaware of the brainwashing they’re receiving.

@Torente32
@Torente32 Год назад
Not brainwashing when its true. Force is violence, and using force on anyone especially political force does not contribute to a moral and decent society. The reason He is saying that because the society before it was run by Scientists, and they lacked the morals to run a Just and Fair government, so Veterans rose up against the terrible things the scientists were doing (imagine Tuskegee but larger scale.) and established a Starship Trooper society where civilians and citizens are all respected equally under the law, except Voting is not a right but a privilege to be a Citizen. You have to want to be a Citizen which is why there's a service requirement. And people who haven't read Heinlen's Book, or paid attention to the movie, Rico's family are not Citizens, and they are one of the wealthiest Families. They were talking about sending Rico to Harvard, and he has shitty grades. A Brainwashing Fascist Authoritarians wouldnt let families like Rico's to be so wealthy and Free. This is also satire because Paul never read the book and Robert Heinlen is a liberal with some authoritarian tendency.
@Torente32
@Torente32 Год назад
Also forgot to mention, the reason Rico and his fellow students arent really paying attention to Ironside's lecture is because the class is a requirement to graduate as long as you are making attendance. The grade you have in the course does not matter, and does not effect your overall GPA at all. You can fail the class and still pass.
@TresTrefusis

This movie NEVER gets old. It's just so damn well made. The production quality on this is astonishing. And they clearly got their money's worth. The score is fantastic, especially that drop on klendathu. Even just as a straight up action film it's awesome. But as a satire it gets even better. The big ships in the space sequences were miniature models. Big ones, but yeah. The model makers said they put no less than 5 R2-D2 figures on the exterior of the Roger Young model. Also said they had a blast doing the ship breaking in half and putting in the rooms and the bodies, etc. TONS of detail.

The asteroid wasn't a random event - they specifically showed the moon has all the "anti-meteor defenses" that weren't used to stop the asteroid. Also, the Roger Young wouldn't have seen the rock if they hadn't used that improved flight path. The bugs don't have FTL capabilities or spacecraft, so they couldn't have fired a Rick from across the galaxy- and it would have taken millions of years if they had! It's all set up.

It's intriguing that this movie came out a few years before 9/11.
@ravissary79
@ravissary79 Год назад
@@zombie5505 you'd have to read into that based on literally nothing. The government in the book isn't imperialistic, it's relatively small in size despite being global, and functions a bit like the Federation in startrek,, individualism and liberal freedom is explocit. The bugs actually do launch asteroids. They're not just innocent animals minding their own business, they're in fact the imperialistic collective in the story. It's precisely BECAUSE the Federation doesn't control the citizenry in the book which allows the Mormons to get away with breaking the ban on colonizing a bug planet, which is what passed them off.... which is exactly what Mormons in an interstellar future would do. No false flag needed. Also the whole license to reproduce thing is bunk that the director added to make the government sound more fascistic. I don't agree with the idea that franchise is earned, but I get the "decadence leading to implosion" argument the book makes against a democracy "gone wild" leading to global catastrophe.

Also a light year is the amount of time. Light travels in a year, which means that whenever you look up in the stars, you’re technically looking back in time, because the light has taken so long that it’s not even recognizable from modern day. Yep, this is the case for all totalitarian idologies, but the government in this movie, even, isn't fascistic at all. PV tried to make it that, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't understand fascism or simply chose the completely wrong source material for his idea. The bugs are absolutely the bad guys. In the books, the Confederation is as close to a realistic liberal utopia as you can feasibly get. Small government, huge and absolute guarantees for rights, and a society based on voluntarism.

I think it was in 2013 when we had Caspar van Dien, Dina Meyer, Patrick Muldoon and John Barrowman ( Trochwood, Doctor Who) as guests at our convention. We did a late night screening of Starship Troopers with the actors on stage doing a live commentary. John Barowman crashed the party and it was the most hilarious evening and screening we ever had. Later that night all of them got on the party stage with the band and did a roof rising rendition of "Great Balls of Fire" That was a party night no one who was there, would ever forget, esp.not the hangovers the day after. 😀

I was 8 years old when this movie was released on VHS, and I remember loving it so much. I even had a toy of the Warrior Bug, it was without question my favorite toy. I still remember the day several years later, I was maybe like... at most 12, cause I was still in middle school, when I had a bunch of friends at my house and decided we should watch it after they saw my bug toy and asked what it was. I had literally never thought anything at all about the nudity in the shower scene, I was pretty much just as unfazed by it as the characters in the film. My friends on the other hand... As soon as that scene started the whole room just went dead silent and got SO uncomfortable, and they pretty much left my house as soon as the movie ended with that weird awkwardness still just... hanging around. I was so confused. Ten years later I learned the word asexual, and thought "Hmm.... 🤔 I wonder?"

A little after this movie came out was the Roughneck Chronicles, one of the earlier CGI TV shows, it is based on the same book but is in its own universe separate from the movie. The animated movies are more sequels to the series than the live action movies. Starship Troopers 2 was probably an existing script that they reworked a little and called it ST2 as it is just a completely different tone. Starship Troopers 3 I wouldn't go as far as calling good, but it _is_ entertaining.

Why Jurassic Park and Starship Troopers still look so great 30 years later is because of the smart use of animatronics and CGI. This is something you don't see anymore because it is a time consuming and costly process. Starship Troopers didn't succeed in the '90 because it was misunderstood by critics and audience, poor marketing and the stack of blockbusters it had to compete against that year. Also I don't think you guys ever been to South America before? Buenos Aires that got destroyed by the bugs is the capital city of Argentina and the population is mainly white.

p.s.: none of the sequels come even close to this. The two live action movies are cheap direct-to-video schlock with bad effects. The 2nd one is a simple B horror movie with some weird tangents and the 3rd one at least tried to pick up the satirical element again, but didn't quite succeed. The two animated movies are alright. In re: "The Whitest South American" at 19:25 -- Something that very few USAmericans seem to know is that in South America, there's a saying along the lines of "the souther you go, the whiter you get." According to a 2020 study by a Mexican university, Argentina is 84% white, 11% mixed, 4% Asian, and 1% Native. Chile is also about 85% white, as is Uruguay, and the states of Brazil from Sao Paolo southward shoot from 65% in Sao Paolo to 90% white almost instantly. To give a point of reference, most European countries are listed as about 85-90% white, so... yeah. Argentina is pretty much just as white as any European country. My wife lived in Mendoza, Argentina for a few years back in the mid-1990's and told me that there was a local holiday celebrating the extermination of the last Natives in the area. I don't know if that's still done, but 28 years ago it was still a thing, it seems.

@@dhorn4005 And I will tell you why, my friend. Because the vast majority of Mexicans who migrate to the U.S. are working class, poor and uneducated mestizos, indigenous, etc, not many white Mexicans. Why is that? Because Mexico’s upper class are Mexicans of straight European decent, not many mixed. They hold the best high paid jobs, are the most educated, and they don’t migrate to the U.S. at all. They do go to vacation there, but no more than that. I guarantee if you go to Mexico City, and visit one of their top neighborhoods like Polanco, Condesa, Roma Norte, Lomas de Chapultepec, etc, you will be right at home. Now, I’m American born citizen of Mexican, French, Spanish, Basque, Lebanese decent, yes, I’m a mutt, lol. I look Arab/Middle Eastern. But I can mingle with Mestizos just fine, as I kinda blend with them. I’m taller than the average Mexican (6’ 2”), and have a full beard (trimmed into a goatee though), Sometimes Mexicans here in the U.S. do call me árabe, lol. But when I speak Spanish to them, they do respond in Spanish back. I’m brown enough, ha. They will call you gringo/gringito though. But when I visit Mexico City, especially in those neighborhoods I mentioned, nothing of that sort happens there. Mexico City for the most part is very cosmopolitan. They do have rough areas, but so most cities I’ve been too, including here in the U.S. I was in Spain a long time ago, 20 years to be exactly great country. So hot in the Summer though. I hear Spain is tired of so many tourists, as they have the second most visitors a year in their country (France is number one, Mexico is number 6). I’m married to a Japanese woman. Japan is my second home. It’s absolutely my favorite country on earth. So clean and safe, so efficient. Gorgeous countryside. So green. The people can be introverted though, especially if you don’t speak Japanese. Most Japanese do not speak English like in the Philippines (everybody knows English there). One of the reasons is because Japan is homogeneous and are First World country. No need for English. My Japanese is not bad. Not perfect, but not bad. I’d say 75% of the time when I speak Japanese to a Japanese, they answer in broken English or Russian, lol. It’s the funniest thing. So I can relate to what you just said about your own experiences in America. Anyway, nice talk. I always enjoy a good conversation with fellow RU-vid commentators.

Michael Ironside's character in this movie is...the best. He's ALMOST out of place, but his unique competence among all the rest actually still works and it just highlights how well he fills the role even more. He acknowledges the things about the Federation that are actually good, but is fully aware of all of its weaknesses and flaws, and since he can't change those, he does what he can to mitigate them. Frankly, had he survived the war, and been further promoted, he honestly probably could've led a very successful coup against the existing regime. Might've managed to keep the good aspects and fix the flaws. Assuming he was smart enough to not grab power when finishing the coup. That's always the problem. The one who leads the revolution, cannot be the one to lead the nation afterward.

This movie is the ultimate satire, as Paul Verhoeven, director o RoboCop and Total Recall, wanted to show the audience that war is hell and should not be glorified, as segments of the movie had military propaganda. Verhoeven said that he wanted the audience to experience what he felt after the Nazis invaded Poland in 1939. Verhoeven read the novel the movie was based on and stopped reading after 2 chapters as he found it to be very boring, as well finding elements of fascism, Nazism and Xenophobia, which was later used in the film. He even wanted to mock the military on how they handle situations that they wouldn't be prepared for. The film recieved negative Reviews by Critics as they accused Verhoeven and Screenwriter Edward Neumeir for being Nazis, as well as promoting Fascism and the over the top violence. It was also a box office disappointment, making $122 million dollars against a $110 million dollar budget. It did recieve an Oscar for Best Visual Effects but lost to Titanic. It's now been considered to be a cult classic.
