I discovered your channel while researching simular repairs on a local university. The squirrels had chewed holes in the lead flashing around skylights set in a Terra cotta roof. I had to weld in patches with an electric soldering iron because we weren't permitted open flame on site. I am a coppersmith by trade. The electric iron turned what would have taken you ten minutes into an all day job. I very much enjoyed the video.

That's interesting work stu, something different, it's going to be a pig trying to tease that lead that lead away to get your lead up behind bit, look forward to the next film on this job 👍atb

Enjoying your videos, back in the eighties carried out a few restoration repairs, nice to see someone is still doing it, I’ve just decided to pack in, I’ve been predominantly carrying out gas repairs, had a long time with British Gas, been bouncing about since 2018 when I left there due to not liking the way management was going, had enough of the stupid people running the industry. Don’t know if I’m going to give up all together and go into full retirement, taking a few months out to decide where I’m going. Had my old lead bag out a couple of weeks ago to help a friend, just doing a few step flashings, and Aprons in a large single story extension, forgot how therapeutic lead work can be! Keep up the good work 👍

Thank you. I bet you’ve worked on some lovey jobs over the years. Lead work can definitely be very therapeutic at times. And you can get fantastic job satisfaction. Maybe you should get those lead tools out every now and then when the right job comes along.

@@slbleadworks yes worked on a few heritage homes where all traditional methods had to be used, no lead burning, all bossed, the jobs used to take an eternity. I remember the first time I worked with the rubber expansion pieces, it was on Huddersfield University, I sub contracted to a firm as no one could vertical butt lead weld, and all the way round the parapets had to be replaced, that was in the early 90s. I think that was the last big job I worked on. I’ve done a few bays with wood rolls for friends over the years and bits of flashing, but now I would have to look in my book to sort out more complicated roofs. My speed and skill levels are well down now, the last time I had a number 3 tip on the go was again back in the 90s. I’ve now been vegetating after retiring from the gas repair and maintenance job I was doing, I’m taking a bit of time off to see where I want to go from here, I’m just going to potter about and help one of my friends complete his extension, there’s a load of work there, relating to every trade out there, luckily when I did my apprenticeship we covered most of the skills involved in house building, and the variation will keep me focused, and keep my brain functioning. Take care Stuart, all the best.

Wow. That is amazing!! That dovecot is so cool. Great work. This restoration work, whilst possibly being a pain must be so rewarding? How much does welding onto to old lead suck though? Looks like it would be a really pain?? Is there no products , like a flux or acid you can apply to help you out? Cheers.
@slbleadworks
@slbleadworks 7 месяцев назад
I did quite enjoy repairing this but yes it was difficult to weld. I had to keep cleaning all the surfaces to give myself the best possible chance. I’m unaware of anything that can help like a flux etc.

That is a "Folly and a Half" must have had to much dosh back in the day. have seen many of them up on some Gothic Buildings or old school buildings seen a few in Jersey on old buildings. Does not look to good at the moment on the ground maybe different once back up on the roof must have some weight with all that lead hope the roof is in good nick. An interesting job Drew Pritchard of Salvage Hunters fame may buy that "Folly" and sell it to someone in the USA for a few bob. Interesting work well done.

I just moved into an old Victorian property we didn’t realise the extension flat roof was lead it steps down on three sections, some idiot not so long ago got cowboy to torch on felt over it but it still seems to be leaking. Do you know if the felt can be removed? The roof in other area also has some leaks which could be punchers can these just be welded up or do they need some sort of patch? I’m on the south west coast and finding someone to work on it is becoming a nightmare. Thanks Justin
@slbleadworks
@slbleadworks Год назад
Hi Justin. The felt would be a nightmare to get off. And even if you could it would leave bitumen behind on the lead. You can weld with this on it. You might be able to clean the effected areas with a shave hook. But I can’t see that felt coming off. It sounds like the lead has had its day.
