As someone who did loads of guided meditations and talks when I lived as A Buddhist monk. It's been a steep learning curve to try to get good sound now that I'm trying to share this information online. Thank you for sharing this. Great explanations and good flow throughout the video to make it easy to follow along.

Barry. Would love to see a video on interesting pieces of outboard and other gear for the studio. Pieces that are meant to give vibe, color and creativity to tracking and mixing.

Barry, I agree with the previous person, Where were you 20 or 30 years ago !!! Man, I could have used your info then, but you are giving great info to those who are starting out. I am glad you are here now though. Keep sharing the knowledge ! I started with the 4 track TEAC to the current MAC/Logic Pro.

I really enjoy your content. You have a fantastic voice for oration, and a wonderful ability to be succinct and concise while covering nuanced subject matter. Can't wait to get your thoughts on the new M2 pro Mac mini, without the rehashed press junket blah blah blah that is so pervasive online these days. I hope this is a fantastic year for you, your channel, family and your health. Respect 👊

Waveform (by Tracktion) is a DAW that has all the features you can dream of, and runs on MacOS, Windows AND Linux. Plus there is a free version that has no limitations.

Hi Barry! For Antelope Audio Discrete 4 Pro and Apogee Symphony Desktop, which would you recommend more? You are the only one I believe!

Barry, I’m located in central Florida (Orlando), and was wondering if I could swing by your studio, and get some ideas for my setup. I had no idea you were local (relatively). Let me know! This is a wonderful channel, and would love to bounce some ideas off you. It seems to me that people get INCREDIBLY wrapped up in specs, without realizing that A). Some incredible recordings were made with gear that can’t come CLOSE to the specs today, with even the cheapest interfaces. And, B). Regardless, of specs you still have to know what you’re doing with “said” gear. As a very rough/general example, I was listening to Ratt’s Invasion of Your Privacy (Beau Hill), and to this very day, that album IMHO is one of the best 80’s hard rock productions I’ve ever heard (talk about mojo and vibe!). I don’t know what the kHz is for (80’s)vinyl, but cd’s are 44.1 per my research (please correct me if I’m wrong on that Barry). My point is that, the gear today (as far as specs go) should get you to a sound quality of at LEAST those recordings (ironically, something Beau Hill talks about, as well). I still would like tangible proof to the difference of sonic quality between recording via a six figure SSL board, and a very good SSL plugin with a $2k (give or take) interface and decent mic package (sm57). Those issues were, for all practical purposes (to my understanding), supposed to have been LONG since re🎉solved. For someone building a studio as a professional-hobby, it makes the buying process VERY confusing/challenging. I’ve said it before…. While I’m on a budget, like everyone else, it’s not the expense NEARLY as much as justifying the expense. (I.e….If I sit down and listen to a great production/mix, will I be able to tell whether or not the producer used a Quantum vs an RME???). I think I’m ready to purchase an RME setup (I need 12 mic pre’s for recording drums), and need to know which models to go with…. Anywa, let me know on that visit, Barry. 👍

Great video Barry, as always. I’m slightly suprised to hear you talk about M1 and M2 tech they way you are…no doubt that when M1 tech came onto the scene it was orders of magnitudes better in performance than others chips- however the more recent Intel (and AMD) based chips like the 13900K, and even the last 2 generations or so absolutely smoke the M1 technology in performance. So now we are living in a time where a high end windows cpu is more powerful and cheaper than an equivalent mac offering. I believe this started with 12th gen intel (but AMD is essentially the same case)
@BarryJohns
@BarryJohns Год назад
Keep in mind my points were if someone preferred Mac, then they are great machines for audio. The new AMD and Intel processors are very powerful for sure, it’s a good time for computers, Mac or PC.

@@BarryJohns we are very lucky!! I just built a new i9 13900k machine, with 64gb ddr5 and the newest NVME tech- its absolutely incredible- it just chews through work. I feel very lucky 😊

This is really helpful, thanks. I pretty much have everything set up. I went with Cubase and woah...there's....A LOT. I just want to record guitar, bass, and vocals (I have my drum plug-in figured out). Should be simple, right? (I'm sure it is) I just need a tutorial on how to use the DAW, and I don't see any good ones out there unless I wanna mix beats. (I don't) So hopefully you'll be able to help us set up and laydown basic tracks, learn how to set up stereo and mono busses, and why we need to know the difference, and most importantly how to save everything correctly and open a new project without disturbing the old one. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. I know just enough to not know what I'm doing 🤣

When I made the transition from decades with Protools, I bought his course and it made it so much easier. Worth every penny. Cubase has different terminology than most others so its harder adjusting coming from another DAW, that said, its incredibly powerful. Here is the link to his course. www.mixdownacademy.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-cubase

I am sure you are a "10.000 hour +" expert. Most of them are not able to explain, what could be a great questionmark for "Newbies". if I had a buddy 30 years ago, who told me that stuff, I'd been way better on my musical journey. Thanks for your efforts!

Wow, I can't believe how much pro-Apple bias you have! 2-3 years ago, I bought a 2013-era Haswell i5 Dell Optiplex, upgraded it to 16GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD and had a great DAW that worked flawlessly using a wide range of DAWs and plugins. Total cost was less than $300. I decided to upgrade last year and bought an "off the shelf" PC (Ryzen 7 5700G) from MicroCenter for around $800 or so, upgraded it to 32GB of RAM and added an additional 512GB NVMe to the 1 TB NVMe installed for additional sample storage. The total cost was well under $1K and it works flawlessly. You can get a much better machine on the PC side these days that is upgradable and costs 1/2 the price of a Mac!

How in the world did you get that opinion of me?
@TonyThomas10000
@TonyThomas10000 Год назад
@@BarryJohns Watch your video around 7 minutes in... Later on, you recommended a base Mac Mini M1 with only 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD (both non-expandable). That is 2X the price of my upgraded off-lease Dell Optiplex and is barely capable for music production due to the SSD, memory, and I/O!
