I'v always wanting to create an abandoned toy shop! As a person who enjoys learning and watching copious amounts of history shows on the History Channel, it just felt right to create a shop that had real historic elements. I loved every moment of this collaboration with Ara from ‪@BentleyHouseMinis‬, it was her idea to create an abandoned toy store and I was totally living for that! I hope you enjoy the outcome.

I really enjoyed watching your process and seeing the things that we did different and the same!! I am cracking up that we both HAD to have a dollhouse in the shop... it was definitely a toy shop must! I will definitely have to try out that Fuller Earth ... wow that was an awesome effect. I loved seeing all of your aging techniques and ideas including the rug and the empty photo space on the wall. You should make more abandoned scenes in the future, you are amazing at this😮😮❤❤ Thank you for this fun collab, my friend!!

Over all I really love this project and I was amazed in how much I enjoyed making things look old a decayed. I was happy with the toy shop but I really loved the shop keepers office. I thought is was cool that we both painted our furniture all in the same color to bring them together and we both used the phrase "it makes them feel more cohesive!" lol.....Yes loved this collab, loved your project!

You have amazing attention to detail, adding photos of the royal family from that time period, etc. And you went to London to see the toy shops in person? Omg, I wish you'd vlogged that for us. I also really appreciate the office on the second floor. Thanks for sharing.

As a Londoner born and bred I hope you enjoyed your time here, London is certainly a good place to visit if you like history, however the small villages and towns show the real history of England. I was glad to see Pollock's getting a mention, I've got a few of his beautiful toy theatres and I use them as part of my decoration every Christmas. Your piece fantastically encapsulated the devastation that people like my Grandmother lived through at the time.
@WhitneyLaBrie
@WhitneyLaBrie Месяц назад
Thank you for sharing about your grandmother, my grandma too lived there during that time and my mom was born in the area. I thought of my grandma a lot while I created this space and thought also of the huge amount of fear that must have been part of her daily life. The time I spent in London was one of the best times in my life and I was blessed to have brought my mom with me as she had not been there since she was very little. We also spent some time outside of London which I adored and someday I hope to go back. Thank you so much for being a part of this video and commenting!

omg I love you, I laughed reading your comment! you are too cute. Yes, I love history and so I wanted to get this right for sure...there are a few little things I could do better and I recently found out about a cool plant called London Pride that would be better to use than the vines..which I now want to replace but as in all projects there can be improvements but I think my grandma, who lived in London at this time would be proud of the nod to what she went through.

You did an amazing job on this toy store. I love the idea of it. My grandfather was born in London and moved to Canada when he was 19. His whole family was left behind. I can’t imagine what he was going through when the war was going on and they were being bombed. I felt some attachment to your project and I loved the office part too. Reminds me of my grandfather’s office, he managed a department store. Thanks for all the memories.
@WhitneyLaBrie
@WhitneyLaBrie 2 месяца назад
Thank you for sharing that with me. My mom was born in the UK and then came to the US when she was about 7. My grandfather (American) was stationed there during to the war and fell in love with my grandma who was born there. I agree about the office, adding it allowed me to connect more with the family who may have owned it at that time. I love abandoned projects even if they give a little bit of a sadness of a time gone by. Thank you for the compliment and for watching!

Thank you Jolene! I'll tell you that paper clay was really great and although for me, there wasn't much difference in how the clay performed on a whole in comparison to the DAS clay I usually use, the real difference was in how it dried, very light weight which I really appreciated using a foam board base! @WhitneyLaBrie I love how it came out and how it worked with the foam board. I have no idea what I'm going to use it on, but I was thinking maybe trying it out for lath and plaster up in the attic..not sure I am still working it out. Terrifying times.. I was born in London in 1960 and visiting the toy shops was always a great treat. My grandma was in London during the Blitz as well, later marrying my grandpa an American serving, they felling love had my mom and later moved to the states. She of course wasn't ever the same, struggled with anxiety and depression etc..I thought a lot about her during the build and what fear they must have felt and the constant unknown. I think so many people had the same experience, to have lived thru something as terrifying as war. The anxiety would have been something they lived with all their lives. My grandad was in the military in England and he developed Turburculosis from the gas and had to have a lung removed. My parents met in England and we immigrated to Western Australia in 1967...best move they ever made. Yes I can imagine the emotions it bought u 😢 Thanku so much for sharing your story and the inspiration behind it. I’m new to your channel - recommended by Bentley’s Miniatures. This looks brilliant, exactly how the bomb sites looked. One tip I would give you though is the glass in the door is not quite right. Here in the UK during WWII, we glued paper strips in crisscross fashion over all windows. This helped to keep as much glass together when it broke. There would also be a blackout curtain on the door and would be rotted through. I hope you don’t mind me mentioning these little things. I really do admire the work you’ve made. X

I was really upset when I lost that footage but sometimes life throws things at you, I'm sure you know exactly what I mean! I loved collaborating with Ara and we had a great time. The fullers earth is neat to use and if you want a really thick mucky look just keep adding layers, I have another video on an abandoned piano where I showcase that cake like appearance! Plus the fullers earth is great as a skin treatment so you can make minis and get a facial at the same time!

While I was slightly confused on the title, cuz like you alluded to ... I thought you might be visiting an actual abandoned toy shop to find those treasures you mentioned; I loved that you actually created this beautiful but haunting miniature instead. Thank you so much for sharing all your tips and products with us, I took some great notes to maybe use them in the future. While I do work in 1:6 scale I love to see any mini tutorials as well no matter the size.

I really love the 1:6 th scale! I have a lot of accessories on display in that size cause well....adorable! I would have loved to go to an actual abandoned toy shop, I do lean into history and I love places that hold some mystery as well. Sorry about the confusion in the TN, I'm honestly the worst at those, always trying to improve and rarely actually improving! lol thank you for watching and I enjoyed hearing from you!

This was great. My favourite (I’m using British spelling)detail is actually the little oval dust mark,left by the fallen oval frame,that is so perfect! Everyone smoked cigars pipes and cigarettes back then,that is a very serious detail to consider,when I compare with your competitor,which I will view next. My other favourite is the middle shelf on the large piece to the left,the collapsed shelf with the board games. That’s brilliant,it captures the effect of lighter objects tumbling over each other,that’s exactly what a shelf of mostly air filled boxes would do,wow Technically my only criticism isn’t one at all. Most of those bombs in London were incendiary,so they were meant to burn the city. I’m actually glad you didn’t create fire damage,as it would have muddied so much up. Maybe that’s why you chose not to. If so,smart decision. Btw,I found a piece of shrapnel in the Thames last year. They are hard to find,just because they look like so much other scrappy metal bits. Anti-aircraft shrapnel,meant to take down the German bombers. Ok,I need to view your competitor!!!

I LOVED working on this project so much. My grandma was living there during this era and stayed through the war. My grandpa was deployed there and they met and fell in love, of course my mom later came along and then several years later they moved back to the US, my grandma never returned and many years later I was able to plan a trip back and take my mom with me. it was really fun to see her there and very special as well. I imagine my grandma would be proud of the tribute. I love the idea of a burn out and in a lot of my research I could see the additional damaged cause by fire, you are right in that I decided not to go that route because I felt it may be too much..however, another viewer told me about the plant called London pride, which I never knew about and so I will likely replace the vines with a plant that looks similar!

I love the story of your grandparents,what a shame they never went back! I was on a plane to London back in 1995,it was curiously filled with a bunch of older people,many of the guys were wearing veteran caps,and many had British wives! Turns out,this flight was taking place the day before the 50th anniversary of VE Day! They were invited to join in the celebration as guests of honor!

Hi Whitney! This is really great! Love how you did the photos on the wall and made it look like one of the pictures had fallen down. Total genius! I am working on my Captain Nemo dollhouse tomorrow. I think it would be hillarious to have a miniature Lava wave machine in it, you know, something a sea captian might like to have after his actual sailing days are over. HAHA. (If you don't know what a wave machine is, Googe it. It's from the late 1970's early 80's, electric gadget) Not sure how I would make a miniature one, suggestions welcome!
@WhitneyLaBrie
@WhitneyLaBrie Месяц назад
That little detail with the empty space on the wall was one of my favorite and actually last minute details that I'm really glad I added too! Thank you for noticing! I'm in love with your wave machine idea, I know exactly what it is! At the container store they sell those tiny little plastic containers that are maybe like 1 1/2 inches wide and 1 inch tall, I feel like you could fill it with a little clear oil, water, and colored glitter and sand, and then make a tiny stand for it that resembles a teeter totter so it could be shifted. I think that could work! Did that make sense!? lol
