Soooooo this video kind of sucks ngl I’m glad y’all have been gravitating towards it and it makes me very happy to see comments and engagement on here, but I made this video when I honestly didn’t know much about sasscore. I feel like I could easily make a much, MUCH better and more informative video than this one if I tried again. Unfortunately, as you’ve probably noticed, I haven’t had time to make videos lately, mostly because of college. But winter break is coming up, I just have to get through finals which end this week. Let me know if you guys would like another sasscore video or if there’s any other kind of review / tier list / anything you want to see me do. With love, Evi

The strangest thing I find about these bands new classification of "sasscore" Was that none of these bands, with the exception of SYSC, ever toured or called themselves "sasscore." I saw all of these bands, except SYSC, in the early 00's and they wouldn't even refer to themselves as "screamo" or "post-hardcore" they considered themselves grindcore, hardcore punk, or noise rock. It really makes me feel like the reclassification of these bands feels completely co-opted, and not done by the band themselves, similar to how shoegaze got it's genre name. Back in the 80's to 90's shoegaze bands just thought they were post-punk bands, which they are. There was also a serious apprehension toward calling your band "emo" "post-hardcore" or "metalcore" in the early 00's because those genres were "popular" amongst scenesters and most punks or people who listen to noise rock music wanted nothing to do with those hipsters. It's just really strange to me that bands I loved during high school now have a new genre name. I'll personally never refer to any of these bands as "sasscore" as I personally believe the guitars and drums have more to do with 70's No Wave and 80's hardcore punk than emo or metalcore albiet with off-kilter vocal stylings.

I heard somewhere that Connie of SYSC actually invented the term to describe her music as well as the other band is mentioned in this video and the label caught on. Personally I don’t believe that because I think I’ve seen videos and websites on the internet that used the term before 2019 (when SYSC got big), but either way it’s definitely a term that was invented more recently. I don’t feel like there’s anything wrong with the term though, it’s a good way to describe this specific type of punk/hardcore bands that came out in the early 2000’s with crazy vocals and sexually deviant themes. And also it’s well known that these bands had a huge connection to the emo/screamo scene so I don’t really see your point there, and I also don’t agree with you gatekeeping punk because early 2000s Metalcore, post-hardcore and emo is fucking great. Either way, I’m happy to have created some discussion with this video, especially from someone who had seen these older bands. Have a good one :)

@@mavisevelyn618 I agree, I think the term is fine, but I'm not going to use it myself. Im really just glad people are re-discovering these bands in the first place. Correction though, SOME of these bands had a connection to the 90's emo/screamo scene, but by the time the early 2000's rolled around punk had become way to mainstream and many of the punk/hardcore/emo bands from the 90's sold out. Green day, blink 182, fall out boy, the used, AFI, my chemical romance all had music videos on mtv with the pop stars so there was a serious worry in the underground punk scene that punk was dying. That was the main reason for the pushback from the emo and metalcore scenes, if there's one thing punks hate it's sellouts because after all punk is a lifestyle and a mentality more than a music genre. There was a time when the locust and the blood brothers refused shows with metalcore bands because of this notion of selling out. I was also on a bunch of different record label forums back then and there was a pretty consistent clowning from the punks on the whole post-hardcore/metalcore scenes. I like some metalcore and emo too but context of the scene at the time is hugely important to understanding it nowadays. Just an fyi too, the hardcore punk scene is home to the biggest gatekeepers in the world but we feel that we have to be to keep Nazi's and rightwingers out of the genre. Ever wonder why the metal scene is mostly straight white men? Nobody is going to challenge your politics in the metal scene, but we're more than willing to do so in the punk scene.
@mavisevelyn618
@mavisevelyn618 2 года назад
@@billyshakespeare488 In my experience the hardcore punk scene is pretty open-minded when it comes to music, like I’ve met people at shows who would just as soon jam MCR as they would The Blood Brothers (myself included). It’s good to keep the right wing out of punk but I don’t think that has anything to do with gatekeeping genres. It’s not a band’s fault if they get popular, look at converge. One of the biggest names in metalcore and hardcore but never once sacrificed their roots for a more radio-friendly sound (I do agree that MCR sold out with Black Parade but their first two albums slap). At the end of the day I feel like punk should just mean we’re all united, we’re all angry and we all love to mosh. Then again, you seem to be more experienced in the genre then I am, you’re probably like twice my age lol
@billyshakespeare488

@@mavisevelyn618 @henoryry I agree, what you have to understand is the scene changes with every generation, the 80's punk scene was different than the 90's and both were different from the 00's and the punk scene is a whole different beast now. There was a huge amount of gatekeeping in the 00's because the metalcore and emo genres were fairly new and they kind of bit our style and sold it out. And then for the next 10 years you had the metalcore explosion and warped tour which really sold out alternative music as a whole and wasn't really "alternative" at all in retrospect. The difference between converge and MCR is huge, converge never had a music video on MTV and social media wasn't a big thing back then so if you knew about converge you were probably already into the scene or in the know. Not to mention most of their records were released on equal vision which is owned by Ray Cappo from Youth of Today. MCR's first record was literally released by reprise which is a subsidiary of Warner Brothers. I remember seeing the "I'm not ok" music video on MTV when I was 13. It's pretty easy to get a music video on MTV if your record label is just a huge media corporation. My point is that MCR sold out immediately from the beginning. I completely agree that anyone who is a punk should be accepted and their taste in music shouldn't be made fun of but punk/alternative music shouldn't ever be a vessel for corporatist capitalism, it's the antithesis of punk ethics. That's the main reason why so many punks had issues with the pop punk, emo, and post-hardcore genres in the 00's, they saw the writing on the wall and it was just about shilling your art for corporate record labels. And major record labels are shady as fuck, there are many documentaries about how record companies have screwed over their artists. I feel old dude, I just turned 30 a month ago, I just got into the punk scene at an early age. I saw all those bands when I was still in high school and 15-16-17. I wore a daughters shirt to high school that had vaginas all over it multiple times and nobody ever said anything.

@@billyshakespeare488 yeah I'm 17 and I've been into emo and hardcore for a little over a year now. at this point I'm so sick of music nerds and gatekeeping and some music being considered "artistic" and some of it being considered "mainstream trash," which is why I was really happy to discover the punk scene where you can be whoever you want (for example, genderqueer) and listen to whatever the hell you want and still be accepted into the community as long as you're down with loud and fast shit. I agree that the scene should never be an outlet for corporations and capitalism, but I can't say I see much of an issue with bands from the scene being popular and mainstream. but hey, I'd love to hear your takes in the comments on future videos of mine, so consider sticking around and giving me a sub. I recently did a review of my favorite album ever, Converge's Jane Doe, as well as a tier list of the Daughters albums, so that might interest you. Have a good one bro

Thanks so much!! Honestly I’m not super proud of this video, been thinking of redoing it now that I have a better grasp on the sasscore genre than I did when I made this (plus I want to do one that doesn’t include daughters 🤮🤮). I’m leaving this up for now tho bc there’s no other information videos on sasscore.

Found this video in my recommendations after diving into some TheLocust & TheRedLightSting. Didn't even know that Sasscore was a genre, had always just called it "noise core", but I can see the ethos pretty clearly know that you've explained it. I also never heard of SeeYouSpaceCowboy till this video, i'm sorta out of the loop on the scene... but now that I'm listening to Misinterpreting Constellations, I wanted to personally say thanks for queuing me into them! excellent video

Awesome video! Please do more sass related vids! I think people credit Orchid too much, because sass was started by Antioch Arrow in the early 90's. After them The VSS(former Angel Hair singer) and Rye Coalition(former Merel members) played sass around 96-97. They are all connected to emo/screamo. And the guy from the Locust(former Swing Kids member)had an even sassier band called The Crimson Curse. Its like emo kids doing noise rock with a sexual slant to scare away normies. The singer from Antioch Arrow used to be the drummer in Heroin. Even more proof Sass is like post-emo. As for the really long song titles, I think they are poking fun at screamo, the same way emoviolence bands did with their pro-suicide song titles. Just my guess.

ah jeez the more I think about it the more I realize this video is kind of embarrassing. I know much more about sass now than I did when I made this. the fact that an albatross is not on this list is criminal. even so I appreciate the comment. glad sass fans have gravitated towards my channel, maybe at some point you'll get more sass content. blood brothers tier list???

Sasscore was honestly the last major scene in Seattle before the scene fell off the map. I know there’s a few major artists here and there but after the Seattle sasscore scene there wasn’t much of a real scene anymore
@mavisevelyn618
@mavisevelyn618 2 года назад
I didn’t know the scene was centered around Seattle
@emanuelbostan5737
@emanuelbostan5737 2 года назад
@@mavisevelyn618 Not exactly centered in Seattle, the scene comes from all over but blood brothers and these arms are snakes are both from seattle and were a big part of the seattle post hardcore scene along with FOT and others from the area which was the last major music scene we had before we stopped seeing a "scene" and just a few break through artists here and there. But im trying to get a sasscore-esque band started here eventually. Still a good dive into the genre for sure. Those were pretty much the albums that really got me into it
