My grandfather did this constantly on the farm with the equipment. Never got what he was really doing or why but I knew it worked..he still starts his John Deere mower like this matter of fact. Appreciate ya
He just won't shell out the dollars for that solenoid! LOL. My grandpa was so cheap due to the Depression. He was born in 1912. He passed in 1989. I miss him.
Not sure but I think you'd have to take the Immobilizer out of the Ignition circuit for the car to run, it will however allow the starter to turn over at least.
KIDS.... take it from your uncle... NEVER DO THIS WITH AN ALL METAL WRENCE ON A REGULAR CARE BATTERY (UNLESS YOU HATE YOUR FINGERS AND LIFE) ....that's all... (and yes I do still have all of my fingers.. I only lost finger nails in the incident)
This video just saved me $330 dollars!!! A mobile diesel mechanic was going to charge me that just to come out to my semi truck. After watching a few videos that didnt work, i tried your methog and truck started. Thanks!!! You now have a new subscriber!!!
You forgot to mention the ignition has to be on in most cars. And if you have a old Ford you got a starter relay in the engine bay you can do the same thing to. Mechanics call it the steal me junction lmao
Absolutely left some stuff out, this video was actually made for my daughter. So that she could access it when she was in a bad spot. But left it up since others found it useful
Any ideas for a truck not wanting to crank over? I changed the altenator, and starter both new along with a 1 week old battery. I'm slowly getting into Automotive mechanics. 2013 f150 v8 5.0 if that means anything i know so vehicles are Specifically known for some common issues. Thanks senat
my grandfather never taught me said i was always into video games however i turned out to love cars as i got older and retained anything he taught me along the way.
I personally like to bridge the gap of the too large terminals, if it spins I know the stater itself is still good, and only needs a new solenoid, much cheaper and get to keep the original equipment.
The voltage is too low and your skin is to dry you won't get shocked, it might spark a little. If it's sparking like your welding you definitely have a problem
When you say problem like engine problem or starter problem how can I see if my starter is fine doing this ? Does sparking mean it’s a working starter ?
My truck won’t start some reason the key don’t do anything but turn my radio on in my truck I put a new starter it’s something different would I be able to do this until I put it into the shop ?
Key is turned on but like I jump the starter, it starts for a few seconds then cuts off and then I have to key off and back on again then jump it over. Gotta do this like 2 or 3 times before it stays running
@ZavidInc I don't know what your working on, if it starts and runs from jumping the starter I would say your back feeding to a un happy relay labeled engine control or something along that line but definitely have a electrical demon
@@ZavidIncsame thing with my moped, I bypass ignition and with the screwdriver trick it will run and idle for about 20 seconds and die 3 times before it decides to run normally.
I happened to learn this trick on accident taking apart a quad to fix it, I forgot to unplug the battery and it started cranking over because one of the cables I took off of the starter solenoid happened to be the power going in or something, almost took off on me
If you want the engine to start yes, if your doing other stuff such as finding top dead center no, please be sure to use all safety precautions such as setting the break and being sure you are in park.
Maybe also mention you need to have the key turned to accessories(or whatever it’s called wherever you are from) 👍 Might be wrong but I know I had to do it to mine when I had to do it many of times.
@@ethanreimer3986so wait. Kinda confused. If you have the key, and it needs to be in the ON position, what’s the point of doing this? You said you wanted to show your daughter incase she was in a bad spot. In case when she turned the key and tried to start it, it didn’t work so she could start it this way?
@marshall8898 there's a difference between the engine running and turning over from the starter, if it is indeed running you are backfeeding power the your electrical system, my guess would be check your ignition fuse, if is indeed running and you leave a wire on there it will burn up your starter completely
When the solenoid receives power into that smaller bolt, it pulls the starter flush with the flywheel and at the same time, it completes the circuit that gives power to the starter motor with the those 2 bigger bolts. If you touch the bigger bolts together, the starter should spin but it won't engage with the flywheel because the solenoid itself hasn't received power to pull the starter teeth into the flywheel teeth.
@@ethanreimer3986 so I'm wondering what's the point of doing this? Why won't the car start by key if the voltage is still coming from the battery when you do this trick?
You ever been stranded in the middel of the night because your starter won't turn over because of a bad relay , burnt wire, blown fuse, loose connection, plenty of reasons for a starter not to turn over as exspected. Thanks :)
@@ethanreimer3986 I'm having starter issues I bought a new starter how do I tell if it's my relay or anti theft I bought a used car that is no longer turning over
I have a question i have a 2003 savanna cutaway school bus (short bus) i bought a new starter and when i plug the battery in the starter starts running by it self wont crank over any ideas what could be causing this
My question might be stupid but can you hurt a newer car doing this well not new but 2001 ? My Mercedes got soaked inside and now doesn’t want to start but it has complete power i just want to make sure i don’t mess up any computers doing this
All your doing is completing the circuit at the starter, however if your soaked inside I recommend you trying to dry it out the best you can, computers/ecms don't like being energized so try to hold off on turning that key till your sure to be dry. Good luck
Mine didnt crank or turn over like yours, it just sparked but i could start normally after that. Thanks alot. Does mine some kind of maintenance because it didnt turn like yours?
Hello, usually in the most inconvenient place you could imagine. Let's start easy find the belts on the front of the engine in your case I'm guessing that would be by the passenger side front wheel, so against the fire wall on the opposite side thats where you would find it
@@ethanreimer3986 Just warning people in general who may do it on something else. (I saw this technique cause a real tragedy once when a large aircraft tug was inadvertently left in gear).
What if your car is getting power but the engine is not doing nothing no sound nothing but the fan coming on and I did this to my starter and it’s trying to start but doesn’t car is in on mode
It is difficult to diagnose a problem when your not there, however let's say that your battery terminals have corrosion this will allow lights and fans to work but may not have enough amps to turn over the engine I'll try to do a short video tomarrow to help
So banging on the starter was mostly a small block chevy thing, because the exhaust headers were to close to the starter causing them to get hot and stick, there othere reasons to bang on the starter but not screws unless you know tricks I dont
I would clean all your connections before we blame the starter, usually when the starter goes out the first thing people think is the battery is bad because it turns over slow or not at all. Good luck
So what do you mean by turn on, so just to be sure your car is in the park position safety brake ingauged key is in the on position and the starter doesn't engage or the starter ingauges but the motor doesn't run?
