Many herbs are slow growing and/or don't get very big and can be started early in the year. Yesterday I got 10 different herbs started. Some of the herbs I've grown before and others are new or have never tried growing from seed. I grouped them by days it takes to germinate and sowed several seeds in each cell/container. 10-21 day group: oregano, cumin, marjorum, 7-15 day group: lemon mint, valerian, lemongrass, Light required to germinate: chamomile, lemon balm, Rosemary takes 14-21 days and lavender takes 18-28 days so they went in their own containers since the germination time is so long. I'll do another update in about a month to show you the progress.

Hey, thanks for not filling the videos with unnecessary chitty-chat, they are really helpful and easy to watch from beginning to end

Glad it was helpful. I try to get to the point in my videos and not make them uneccessarily long. :)

Wow, great video. The cost of buying "ready to plant" flowers and veggies is getting ridiculous. I will be starting my own from seed from now on. Thank you!

Awesome! Yup it is crazy how much they charge for plants that can easily be grown.

Thank you for calling out lemon balm NEEDING light. Someone else said the opposite and my in the dark seeds have not sprouted yet.

I was kind of surprised too. Anytime I grow something new from seed that I haven't grown before I check that requirement. Not a lot of seeds require light.

thanks for info, wow alot of elements involved. Ive just germinated skullcap using garden soil and garbage bag inside treatment, they are now in the " nursery" and having sunlight every day and powering, thank god, a first for me, but its good to learn about other tips that I can utilise.

There's definitely more than one way to do things! The time of year you start them can also determine how you do it. It's very cold here in Feb so I always use a heat mat when starting most seeds that time of year.

Lavender seeds needs a month in the fridge before planting. Stratification. Tried without nothing grew. A month in the cold and they sprouted.
@gapey
@gapey 2 года назад
That makes sense. I know most perennials seem to benefit from stratification.

Where did you get your metal rack system that you set your heating matts on? Are the shelves adjustable?
@gapey
@gapey 7 месяцев назад
You should have no problem finding those racks at like a Lowes or Home Depot. They are adjustable. The wood shelf I have on some of the shelves were made by my bf so you can't buy that for it.

You do realize that the vast majority of culinary & medicinal herbs we use hail orifginally rom the Mediterranean region of the planet and are therefore mostly woody perrenials. If you winter them over in that little greenhouse area you have there, you won't have to resow them each year and they will be ready to go out at least a month earlier and they will be far more productive for you. Depending on where you are located, you may not have to bring them in at all. They are tough little critters. Just sayin'.
@gapey
@gapey 3 года назад
Yeah I've been wintering over my rosemary in the greenhouse that I have in a container and seems to work pretty well for those. I may do that with thyme too. Thyme and rosemary are the only woody perennial herbs I have that seem to die over winter if left outside.

im doing Anise hyssop from seed indoors, hoping the chamomile I seeded outside does the same thing as last year. I have Tons of lemon-balm.
@gapey
@gapey 8 лет назад
+Permaculture Prepper the chamomile I grew from seed last year had very spotty germination. Only got a couple plants but it was plenty. They grew pretty big and I got tired of picking the blossoms after a while. :p haven't grown anise hyssop or lemon balm before.

Don't LAVENDER seeds have to spend weeks in the fridge before sowing them?
@gapey
@gapey 5 лет назад
yeah they'd probably germinate better with some stratification. Most perennials do.

It have been a months since my lemon balm germinated, but they aren't getting any bigger. No new leaves. Any ideas ?
@gapey
@gapey 6 лет назад
Not sure what the problem could ben. Might be not enough light, not warm enough, not enough nutrients.
@kaylevick7853

Once you move it into the light how often do you water the seeds and seedling
@gapey
@gapey 2 года назад
It really depends on a lot of things. How warm it is, what grow medium you are using. Some soils are better at water retention than others and don't need watered as often. The age of the seedlings also make a big difference. The smaller they are the less often they need watered. I water mine a couple times a week when they are very young. Once they get a lot bigger it's almost daily watering. You really just have to check the soil or the weight of the container to determine if they need water or if the plants start looking droopy is another sign they need water.
@HamiltonRb
@HamiltonRb 5 месяцев назад
I usually put a paper towel over the soil after I plant the seed, and water the towel good. Once the seed sprouts, you can remove the towel. This prevents overwatering and displacing the seeds, and acts like a mini blanket to keep them warm.

What if you don’t have a heating Matt or a light lamp? It’s about to be summer can I just grow some outside and maybe some inside?
@gapey
@gapey 4 года назад
sure you can. It will just take a little longer without a heat mat.

Great seed starting video! Thanks for sharing! I am planning on planting lavender around my house do you think it is necessary to start them and then transplant of do you think i can put the seed right where i want the plant to be?
@gapey
@gapey 8 лет назад
+Benja's Uber 1337 Hobby Lavender takes a really long time to grow so starting them early indoors is probably best. Unless you live in an area that doesn't get too cold or has a long season.

Is a lemon balm entire bush the result of a single seed or overseeding?
@gapey
@gapey 4 года назад
I actually started my lemon balm patch from a small plant I got at a plant swap and it spread pretty quickly.
@jay8819
@jay8819 7 лет назад
do I plant thyme as one seed per pot, like a tomato plant, or do I scatter them like growing cress?
@gapey
@gapey 7 лет назад
I usually scatter them in like a 4" pot and then as they get bigger separate them out into individual pots. You can put multiple in a pot depending on how bit your final container is. I start them in pots and then transfer to the garden when they get big enough but you can certainly keep them in containers if you want.

I want to germinate chamomile, but I don't have a grow light. Would it work if I leave it out in the sun with a clear bag on top?
@gapey

sure that should work. chamomille germinates pretty easily in summer without a grow light. I have volunteers growing up all over my garden.

hi. what if i dont have a grow light? will that affect the germination of the seeds?
@gapey
@gapey 6 лет назад
Most seeds don't need any light to germinate so they should germinate fine. Once they germinate though they will get leggy if not provided enough light.
@raymondalfredlopez3134
@raymondalfredlopez3134 6 лет назад
oh, what does leggy mean? sorry, English is not my native language. do most herb seeds need light to germinate? i'm trying to start an indoor herb garden.
@gapey
@gapey 6 лет назад
It means they'll grow tall and skinny and then fall over. Most seeds don't need any light to germinate. You should google what you are growing to be sure if they do or not.
@gapey
@gapey 6 лет назад
In my description I indicate that chamomile, lemon balm, Rosemary need light to germinate but that is not a comprehensive list. Just a list of the ones that I was growing that require it.

Hi Paula! Started following your IG thanks to CaliKim! I noticed that you used EB Stone seed starter. I used Jiffy seed starter late winter, ran out then bought EB Stone mid-Spring. I found that I liked Jiffy much better. I got better germination. What was your experience? Thanks in advance!
@gapey
@gapey 8 лет назад
Totally agree! I ended up getting EB Stone early Spring because I couldn't find the organic Jiffy, which I normally use, anywhere. I didn't even see it on Amazon. I start my onions before most places start carrying seed starting mix. I finally found EB Stone at the local True Value Hardware and must say I was disappointed. I plan on buying some seed starting mix now in preparation for next Spring in case I can't find it again. Thanks for stopping by!
