Planting a food forest and starting vege gardens is an exciting part of developing our property. We're in the early stages and I'm excited to share with you the projects we've been working on so far and some of the rare fruit and other fruit trees we're growing. I'll also be sharing how we're working on turning our grass lawn into and abundance of fruit and vegetables! One step closer to becoming more self sufficient :).
I'll go through mulching with wood chips and cardboard, planting some cool fruit trees, nitrogen fixing trees and plants, growing in raised vegetable gardens, growing berries, our chicken run and some other stuff!
I hope you enjoy and let me know if there's a topic you want me to go more in depth on :)

Your property is looking pretty good, great potential for te years to come and most likely it will look spectacular in 10-20 years, interesting to see how your trees have already come out of dormancy as the same situation is happening in Australia and probably other parts of the world too.

Ice Cream bean --> Guaba because that's the actual name and it tastes nothing like Ice Cream. It's more like milky fluff with a cotton candy consistency that you kind of just suck on and don't eat the actual fiber. Very mellow tasting sweetness to it.

wow amazing can't wait to see it all lush! Have you got any olive trees or going to get some? i ended up getting around 4 feijoa varieties probably 3 years back because i came across your videos and i'm so glad i did! i ended up making a hedge with olives and feijoas because of their similar foliage colour and i love it.

I'm curious, don't you have snow in the winter where you live? Because I had some little trees too, but last winter we had 180cm (roughly 6 feet) of snow at once, which obviously crushed all of them under its weight.

What growing Zone are you in? At first I thought you where in a tropical area because of the types of trees you planted but you said it gets close to 0 C. Your planting trees that I have never seen before and wouldn't think to grow here but I might try it if our zones are similar.
@TheKiwiGrower

Our cold hardiness zone is roughly equivalent to 10a. Gets down to around -1 or -2c here :)

Hi great vlog just found your channel. What type of sleepers do you use for your garden beds? I'm trying to decide what I will use 🤔
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 3 года назад
Hi Lisa, I’ve used red gum and white gum, which is quite a good long lasting option due to how hard and dense the wood is. People also commonly use macrocarpa sleepers :)

Hey, sadly late frosts can be a real pain, and can potentially kill the flower and fruit depending on how cold it is. Just see how it goes :)

Hiya! I was just wondering why you'd choose Lupin, a non-native invasive species, instead of a local alternative?
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 2 года назад
I don’t know if any native alternatives like this that have all the qualities of lupins. I just use them as temporary plants to improve soil and provide other benefits to the permanent plants. They’re not invasive in a managed system either :). If some do go to seed they will grow again but in my context that’s helpful as I chop them out again when they’re a big plant, providing more nitrogen and biomass to the food forest

great channel! definitely something I would like to do in the future. I was wondering where you lived? I live in California and there is a lot of clay soil which makes it a little difficult to grow certain trees and plants. I was wondering if you knew a way that could help turn the clay soil into something better for fruit trees? thanks!
@TheKiwiGrower
@TheKiwiGrower 3 года назад
Hi Nicholas, thanks for the comment. I’m in New Zealand. On my place we have only around 20cm of topsoil before hitting heavy clay. My fruit trees are doing well and my neighbour has the same soil and they still do great. One thing I’ve done in area where my topsoil is particularly thin or for trees that do better without clay below is to put in a mound of topsoil and plant on top of that. I’ve done this in dips as well which would otherwise collect water and flood the fruit trees too much. You can improve soil overtime with heavy mulching which is what I’m doing. As the mulch (wood chips etc) gets broken down by fungi and other microbes it’s turns into rich soil and improves soil immensely :). Hope that helps!
