Seed starting dates for my particular situation:
Last Frost - April 25
Plant out cool flower transplants and direct sow cool flowers - Mid March
Start Cool Flowers that have a long DTM (Days To Maturity can be found on the seed packet) - Early Feb
Start Cool Flowers with a short DTM - Mid Feb
Start tender annuals with a long DTM - Mid March
Start tender annuals with a short DTM - End of March/early April
These are the exact dates I use, and they are particular to my last frost date. After 7 years of growing cut flower, I do not vary much from these dates. I offer them as an example and not a rule. As always, do what is best for you in accordance with your last frost date.

Danielle, hello. I love watching your videos, you have a wealth of knowledge and thanks for sharing. I took a tip from you about Straw Flowers. I have tried with about 5 % success some fancy apricot shade seeds from Sarah Raven. I was almost giving up after the 3rd attempt. I heard you talk about bog standard mixed seeds being easier so I took your advice. 3 days later I have 100% germination ! Thank you so much x

What a great channel. I'm so happy I found you. Regarding Shop lights unfortunately they are no longer selling fluorescent lighting at Loews or Home Depot. I have one fluorescent lamp that has 2 bulbs already but I noticed you are using 2 Lamps on 1 shelf. Is that necessary? Can I put a LED on the same shelf as the fluorescent? Thank you. I love your "REAL" home gardening.

Have you tried watering once a week with mosquito bits (Amazon or Home Depot) I use 1 tablespoon in a gallon of water (soaked for 30 minutes). It reduces fungus gnats by stopping lifecycle at the soil level. Super helpful. Sterilizing potting mix with boiling water also works (and cooling it). I have started successful plants with no issues for years that way. Seeds don’t need “food” in soil to start.

Thanks so much for this helpful video! I started strawflower last week since I'm in zone 7 and with your advice from previous videos and this one I'm going to plant some outside mid-March and start more indoors at that time. I didn't realize strawflower could come off the heat mat once they germinate, good to know! Thanks for all your advice in your channel.

Always such great information. I really like that you share the dates you use and your last frost date. It makes it very helpful for when I start my own seeds. Since my last frost date is later than yours (zone 5b), this gives me a heads-up to start thinking of starting things. Greetings from Michigan! 😊

Yes, strawflowers are fun to grow. I enjoyed your colorful background with the beautiful painting and amaryllis and hearing about your process. I also start some strawflowers under grow lights and do some with winter sowing jugs and have success. However, what's really exciting is that they reseed here in zone 5a and I love seeing them each spring!

I took a tip from Laura at Garden Answer and topped my seedling trays with a light layer of sand after the seedlings popped through. I do think it has cut down on fungus gnats by a lot! I just bought a $4 bag of sand at the hardware store that is sold for winter weight in a vehicle. Happy seeding!

Love the exact dates too, would you also plant/transplant out delphinium and foxglove 6 weeks before the last frost? And do you need to harden off cool season flowers as well?
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm Год назад
Yes to both. I harden everything off for at least a week. I also try to look for a window where the weather is not extreme when considering what day to plant out. I prefer to not shock any of them initially, and I do use agribon if necessary.

Hi Danielle I was wondering if you could tell me why my pansy seeds are sending their roots across the surface of the soil instead of down into the soil. I've never had this problem before. I started them 9 days ago and saw that they weren't sending their roots down. Yesterday I thought that maybe it's too cold so I put them on heat mats. They are planted in six packs. I surface sowed the seeds and they have been under lights and in my house the whole time. Do you have any idea why this is happening? Thank you, Jill

So helpful as always, so thank you for sharing the details!! Do you use a thermostat on your heat mat? I have one with a thermostat and it always seems to be warmer than I expect. Maybe because I use soil blocks on a black tray and T5 lights that do warm up a bit? I find myself not using them when starting cool flowers because I’m worried it is actually too warm for them. Would appreciate any thoughts on this!

Hi Danielle, thanks for sharing your timing schedule. As a newer seed starter, I find I have to rely on the seed packets and/or seed calculators to know when to do things. I noticed your schedule varies from what the seed packets say sometimes. Is this because of your experience over the years, trying something slightly different and seeing what works? I don’t think I have the confidence to try going “off script” quite yet!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm Год назад
Thanks for this great question friend! Since most seed companies don’t take the Cool Flowers concept into consideration I don’t use the packet for any hardy annual information. Instead, I use the plant out date for my zone and days to maturity to decide when to start cool flowers. Tender annual information I follow loosely. The dates I shared are based on what works best for me. I also prefer to not prick things out or bump them up. Ideally, I want to grow those 48 cells to the right size for their particular plant out date. It definitely is a lot to keep track of, but if you track it on a calendar one year and discover what’s best for you then you can reference that in the following years. I hope that helps!
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm Год назад
PS- when you buy seeds from the gardeners workshop she does put the cool flowers seed starting on the packet. That is the only company I know of that shares cool flowers dates.

@NorthlawnFlowerFarm
@NorthlawnFlowerFarm Год назад
I’ll be happy to do that! I have not grown it in a few years. In the past I had a huge problem with cucumber beetles destroying the leaves. They are one of the first things I start in mid March. In past years I grew them inside to start. They were very slow. Similar to celosia. They didn’t seem to hit their stride until it warmed up outside.

Hmmm very interesting. Do you think they didn’t have a chance to reach maturity? Can you share when you planted them out and when your first frost happens? They form that lower basal foliage, the foliage grows up some, and then the flowers are born on long stems without many leaves along that stem.
