(4 Nov 1974) A new session of Parliament is opened by Her Majesty the Queen amid the rich ceremonial which is part of Britain's National Heritage. ® The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh drive to the Palace of Westminster in the Irish State Coach. ® A fanfare announces Her Majesty's entrance into the Royal Gallery and the solemn procession to the Throne begins. In the procession are HRH Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips. In the Chamber of the House of Lords wait the Peers, Judges and Bishops in their Parliamentary robes. ® At Her Majesty's Command, the Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod goes to summon the Commons. By tradition the door of the House is closed against him and he has to knock three times to gain entry. Then the Speaker, The Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition and the Members of the Commons file into the House of Lords to hear the Queen read her "Gracious Speech from the Throne".

So until the 70's, the Queen still opened the speech by "My husband and I..."

7:10 - This was 1974, it would four more years of discussion and delaying tactics before the House of Lords and the House of Commons agreed and allowed sound broadcasting of their proceedings. The first broadcast started on Monday 3rd April 1978 on the BBC.

absolutely fascinating something from 45 years ago can be up on youtube, only someone 70+ would know this as a contemporary!

At that time Queen Elizabeth II already cared about her country by reducing inflation and finding the best deal to figure out those issues. What a respectfull lady she was 🙏

The Commons were much more well behaved at the time.

It'll be interesting to see what Camilla wears at the State Opening of Parliament next month.

Tuesday 29th October 1974 this happened, the year of two elections. The first election was a rushed job amid the three day week so that state opening in March 1974 was "dressed down" without too much pomp we see here, so this must have been October 1974 after Labour squeezed to victory of a 3 seat majority.

I'm guessing she didn't wear the correct crown in March? When we passed out sovereignty to the eec.

@@stucrossland3719 In March 1974 the crown was carried before her in procession, she didn't wear it.

We had already entered the EC in 1972. The Labour government put the continuation of membership to a referendum in 1975, and a large majority of the public voted in favour of continuing as part of the EC.

She was in Edward Heath's cabinet from 1970, and when Heath and the conservatives went into opposition in 1974 she remained in his shadow cabinet until 1975 when she stood against him for leadership and won.

@@johnking5174 And I think she was in Heath's shadow cabinet prior to the Conservative victory in 1970. I think she joined the Tory shadow cabinet in 1966 when Heath replaced Alec Douglas-Home as Tory leader (although Thatcher had served as a junior minister in the Macmillan and Douglas-Home administrations).
