After yesterday's vlog, there were a few questions on static vs dynamic ergs. Today I discuss the ever-changing world of rowing machine innovation with the differences between staic and dynamic rowing machines. There is a massive difference between the two, have a watch and listen to hear what I think. What do you think is best and why?

Storage can be a factor as well. You can put a lot of C2s in a smaller space.

Rowperfect (especially the rp3) are so comfortable, I can happily sit for an hour or more on an rp3. This is the environment in which it shines, steady state to iron out the bad habits (not tests and high strain stuff... Who tests on them anyway? ) . Its little details like decent handles, cushioned seat make it a nice place to be, and the balance on the seat means my posture has to be good and linear. Having swept one side for a while everyone knows you become lopsided, an rp3 kept my core in check and my back healthy. Once your comfy on an rp3 its a zen like experience yet your body is switched on to make it all go smoothly. Great vlogs liking the discussions.

@@CameronBuchan for sure! Unlike when I'm on a c2 i don't feel completely ruled by numbers, like being in a boat its about feel and connection. In addition its nice when you can chuck a heart rate monitor on and focus on training in a target zone, and rowing well for a long time in that zone. Its always refreshing to measure and understand your rowing in different ways to the norm!

As an older (+60) rower, I appreciate this perspective. First erg was an inexpensive device. I put about 10 miles/day 5 days a week and it lasted 5 months. Purchasing a C2 D model and hopefully that will last alot longer. Thanks Mr. Buchan for your overview of static vs dynamic. I'm gonna stay with the static until I actually get out into the water. I maybe then will feel the need.

Thanks for the positive feedback Bill! The Concept 2 machines are built to last and are easily repaired if something does go wrong. I have seen machines in the 100s of millions of metres! #yamsquad

Cam, serious question mate. My wife used to row, had throat cancer, now breathes thru a stoma in her neck. Used to use the erg but. Ow she finds that it puts strain on her neck and a tube that allows her to eat/ drink. With the dynamic erg and the different feel technique and feel … might this be a realistic and viable alternative given the way it’s used? Thx in advance. Was good to see you in person a few yrs ago at HRR albeit I recognized your dog first :-). Great to see your progress in the single
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 25 дней назад
Hello! I would say the technique used is very similar so if one is having issues it is very likely that the other would be too in this situation unfortunately. Although I don’t have any experience in it so not 100% sure. Would definitely be a case of trying to try it out before buying for sure

Great films of the eight again, Cam. I was so impressed with the C2 that I rented it direct from Concept here in Germany. Easier than splashing out 1400€ all at once. Have also acquired a SkiErg to train the opposite muscle groups. Won`t ever give them back! Now have allround fitness not to mention a cramped living room!

I hadn't noticed before that one of the movements in rowing the machines don't seem to replicate is the arcing of the torso in the direction of the blade (2:30 ish) - to follow the arc of the oar handle. No sign of machine makers building that movement in?

I made a dynamic model B C2 ergometer, put it on wheels attached to its feet. And a bungee cord to hold me to the wall. I get the travel and it pulls me back again. Very inexpensive compared to the C2 slides or a real dynamic machine and a huge relief to the lower back. I tried to read explanations of WHY it's easier, moving the machine, not myself and such...Also I can (briefly!) row at a far higher rate than on the erg NOT on wheels. I would suggest it to anyone, the more in amazing condition the better. When you're 50 you might want to pick up a paperclip off the floor, be kind to your back. Thank you for the analysis, it's nice to hear from a GOOD athlete what goes on in the lofty regions of sports.

I really need to get a pair of those whiplash Crokkers! 😆 #freespeed I think static ergs are really detrimental to getting rower to engage the lower core and after a winter of training, it takes a long time to get stability back into the shell while on the water. No choice at my club, it’s all static ergs.

There must be more than 100,000 Concept 2s around the world. Because they are privately held, the Company wouldn't tell me how many they had sold. In my brief career in rowing I haven't used a dynamic machine but the next time I work out with the WSU Mens Crew Team I'm going to try one out (It's really fun to work out with thirty or more other rowers). Also, can you give us the recipe for "Breaded Egg Toast?" It looks really good.

at 5:40 "That drag factor, that number on the fan" small slip of the tongue I guess
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 5 лет назад
Well it gives a small idea to people that may not know what drag factor is. Moving to the number on the side of the erg changes the drag factor. Some people don't know you can go into the settings and get a precise number for the df
@nikolasengelhard6386
@nikolasengelhard6386 5 лет назад
@@CameronBuchan Just before that you explained how the df depends on maintenance and different machines need different fan settings. BTW: How about more videos on technique? I just started rowing and would love videos about basic stuff like how to position the grips in the hand or how to feather and square without killing your wrist.
@CameronBuchan
@CameronBuchan 5 лет назад
It can depend on maintenence but it doesn't have to only depend on one thing. Like I said if the machine is not well maintained a 10 on that machine could be the same as an 8 on a well maintained one. That's a great idea, just have to find the time when I'm not rowing and someone else is to make the content!! #yamsquad

The Oartec DX is about half RP3's price (at least it is in the USA). The DX doesn't have as much digital feedback as the RP3. But it has a similar design and feel (IMO). The DX has a double rail, unlike the RP3. Although, I believe RP's new RP3"T" has a double rail as well. Carlos from RP3 said the "T" will cost more than the RP3. Oartec is nearing beta testing a new monitor that will have force curve, meters per stroke, stroke length, etc. I hope that helps. Best, Jamie. #yamsquad

@jamespfeffer2941
@jamespfeffer2941 5 лет назад
@@CameronBuchan Oartec used to make an erg called the "Slider." I think they sold the rights. Now they make the "DX." It is similar to the Row Perfect RP3, albeit the monitor is not as detailed as RP3's tablet. Because I am handicapped, the dynamic machine is easier on my back. In your Northeastern video it looks as if you were using the RP3s in a Boston Big Dig tunnel or underground somewhere. Your equipment must have worked, though. You won Silver at Sprints!

Indeed we had the rp3s and the oartecs, as well as a bunch of other experimental machines! The tunnel brings back some great memories!
