Not necessarily. Perhaps Jean thought the the building debris falling on her was what Virgil was referring to her being "hurt" by. Perhaps she thought after she was saved by Virgil the first time she was no longer condemned to certain death that night and thus was willing to continue to take risks to save more people.
I feel like she was also able to put two and two together and knew what path to take to ensure her son would have the future he did and be the hero he is.
If Static wanted to save her life he should have blasted himself in the chest and give himself a critical injury. At that point his mother has no choice but to rush him to the hospital where its safe.
I still choke up at the end. Static returns to the present day and runs through the house to see if his mother is there but she’s still gone. He asks his father what happened and the events seem to play out the same. However, his father mentions, “she said how proud of you she was and how you were her “superhero”. Oh god, it kills me.
It's funny because this subtly draws parallels between Virgil and his mother. His mother saw people hurting and wanted to help them even if it meant putting herself in danger, just like her son.
I think the best part is the end of the episode when Virgil's father had told him his mother was saying that he was her super hero. It told Virgil how truly proud she was of him
Not only did she go because people needed her help, she went _knowing_ she’d get seriously hurt in the process. In fact, based on the way Virgil talked, she’d probably pieced together that she died and _still_ went.
I'll forever love Static Shock for being willing to deal with adult issues like this. It had episodes that dealt with homelessness, gang violence, bullying and even racism. You rarely see that in kids shows these days, especially so in cartoons.
zgamer200 yeah, nowadays you see on tv (mostly) crap that treats children like if they're mentally retarded instead of showing how the real world is like some old cartoons like this
@D D lmao what? How does Adventure Time talk about Alzheimer's? Do you mean the Ice King? That's not Alzheimer's that's a magic crown overwriting Simon's personality. If anything Arthur actually touched on Alzheimer's years ago with his Grandpa
@D D well I don't get Alzheimer's from Ice King, and I actually have a relative with Alzheimer's and the sting from it. The Arthur episode though hits the nail on the head
One thing I realized watching this episode: it was established early in the series that his mom died by gunfire. When Static saved her from being crushed, it dawned on me that he wasn’t going to be able to change the future in any capacity. He was just helping the past unfold as it already had. Interestingly, rewatching the DC Animated Universe, you realize that Static and Gear were among the first in canon to reveal themselves to world as superhumans and not aliens or rich boys with toys
@@1UpEXP I feel like Soul Power wasnt really that accomplished, that hes an unreliable narrator. Otherwise Static's mom wouldnt have been so confused about meeting a superhuman since they would have been public knowledge by this point. Plus Static didnt really know who he was which mean nobody had made the comparison before.
@@RikelWirkkunen On top of that, Soul Power had lightning powers too, so it's funny she didn't immediately decide that Static must actually be Soul Power trying a new look.
It's just so bittersweet because Virgil still lost his mom eventhough he interfered with the past. She never lived long enough to physically see her family grow up but she managed to see what her son looked like as a young adult.
Well not really if he knows Virgil's family personally it's not a cover blown because he's so close to them they consider him family anyway if it's to Virgil's family
I know how you feel. I lost my mom when I was a kid. It was hard for everyone especially my dad. He kept telling me and my brother to do her proud and become good men. Now that I'm in the 30 milestone I do what I can to help kids to stay on the right path.
I relate to you too I lost mine 11 years ago I was just 13 at the time I shed a tears too and miss her every single day in my life it ain't easy to lose a mother that loves her children
Emerald Phoenix wait is it actually confirmed that they are making a 5th season cause if so I'm buying that DC streaming service without a second thought
Such a heartbreaking moment in a kid's show. Virgil lost his mother due to needless and senseless violence and so desperately wanted to save her from her tragic fate. He wanted a real relationship with her when older when he still needed his mom. But at least he got to hear his mother say how proud she was of him when learning of his superhero duties as a teenager. What was even more tragic was his mother knowing she was going to die if she went back down to the streets yet still sacrificing herself anyway to save more lives. To live as a heroic memory for her children and family.
It wasn't certain death in Jean's view at that point though. Perhaps Jean thought that Virgil's intervention up to that point changed history enough and gave her a chance of surviving.
@@joaolima7131 That was my point. All Virgil told Jean was that she got hurt. Jean probably thought by "hurt" Virgil that she was crushed by the falling debris in his timeline and Virgil stopped that, thus saving her life and changing history. She didn't know she would be shot and killed later that night.
@@lonchaneyslover7635 actually according to wikipedia "Original release" is September 23, 2000 - May 22, 2004, well yes your right it was on in 2003, but it first came on September 23 2000, also I was only 8 and a half months old at the time, and now I'm 19, it's been so long
Add in that his dad is actively helping people with the community center. The only way his upbringing could have been more pure is if he was also related to Mr Rogers
Losing a parent (regardless of age) is never easy 😢 I’m 38 years old & lost my dad on 5/4/22. He & I didn’t get along well up until the end. I miss him so much that if I ever see him in the afterlife, I’m gonna break down crying & won’t be able to stop. Love your folks. They’re not perfect, but they’re the ones who raised you & will love you no matter what. Even on your worst day, parents will always give you the love you deserve & you’ll always be their greatest achievement. Love you Baba (Bengali word for dad/father). I hope you’re at peace in heaven.
This was a powerful episode. In fact, looking back, Static Shock was on basically when I started going through Junior High and puberty. It dealt with very heavy subjects like gangs and racism. Very tough to pull those off in a kids show.
HyperDragoonHx His mother was a very brave woman. obviously she knew that she is going to die why else would he be back in time. And yet she still sacrificed her own life to save others
You could say this is why Batman trusts him. There's no way he wouldn't look into Static's background. When they meet he claims he knew his name due to his student ID, but we all know Batman would look this upstart teen hero. Learning that Vergil's mom tragically died during this riot would probably encourage him to trust Vergil. His actions only solidified that.
@@saltyk9869 Exactly, because he's knows what it's like to lose a parent since he once lost his parents from a young age and he totally feel his pain. ❤
Static Shock was truly ahead of it's time. You don't get shows with impactful moments like this anymore. I can only think of one show currently airing that even has this much emotion, Steven Universe.
@@EpicFableBean MLP pushed… some boundaries. It was… slightly mature, but they never really pushed the boundaries like Static did And Regular Show, I’m not sure you can even consider that a kid show
I can understand that Virgil is hurting and missing his mother it's very hard when someone in the family is gone I've losted some members in my family be strong Virgil she still watching over you.
Jake Rutigliano no she died in the comics to basically it was she died I'm the fire or something like that then static goes back and saves her then she dies by the stray bullet so in the end no matter what static does she's supposed to die
You can hear his voice went a little more scared and higher pitched when he was begging his mom to stay on the rooftop. He desperately wanted her to live, but both of them kinda knew that she wouldn't listen and would go out like the hero first responder that she was
When I first saw this,I was both genuinely scared and genuinely sad at the same time,Virgil's mother was a good person, she was brave, she was selfless, trying her best to save innocent lives, she will be missed,if Virgil's mother was alive, she would be so proud of Virgil.
I remember one time, somebody commented on this episode, if they could travel back in time, then they'd use it to save their friend from committing suicide. We often depict time travel being used for petty reasons, but what if we used it for more meaningful purposes, like saving lives? Think about it.
Why not both? I would go back in time to warn my father about getting checked out for cancer earlier, but I probably would bring a sports almanac or maybe a list of stocks to invest in as well.
I miss this show, Static Shock had many mature moments that were life lessons yet also entertaining for children. Virgil and Ritchie's relationship and the friends they make on the way is also memorable, and the time Static met Batman and Robin. This show deserves more praise as the Justice League or Teen Titans has.
But ultimately, it's not a good idea. Even if we hate it, if we could change the future, it wouldn't always necessarily cause a better future. There's also the possibility that you do change the future, you return to your time, only to find nothing's changed for you (Multiverse theory)
I remember Static Shock was on Kids WB in 2000 until 2004 then move to Cartoon Network in 2004 until 2008 then Disney XD show reruns in 2009 until 2010
Many superheroes lose their parents, it's an overdone trope. But Static Shock made that loss not only feel real but important. Virgil couldn't save his mom, because she was busy saving others. It's not his fault, and it's not all bad. She died while being a hero, which inspires Virgil to try to be just as good as her.
He got to go back in time, fully reveal his hero identity to his mother, have her express approval and extreme pride, and still be allowed his normal future without having caused a butterfly effect in the process. He got the closure with his mother he so desperately needed and I'm trying not to cry.
Imagine being able to see your mom again when u thought you'd never c her again. I bet Virgil wanted to cry when he saw her. Even though he didn't prevent her from getting shot, he was still grateful to b able to c her again
This shit made me tear up. But I don't like how the mom says "If You Are My Son... Then I'm Proud Of You." Almost as if she didn't believe him. Static should've just stuck around to keep an eye on her till the night was over.
+juestabuckII Yeah I mean if things like with Francis bullying him still happened. Static's mom being around would've possibly led to Virgil not joining Wade and his gang into going to the docks.
+juestabuckII Really??? Are his powers worth the life of his mom? Lol, just sayin'. Oh u know what? This is gana sound insane, but fun. So say Static, saves his and then his mom never dies, so in the future his mom still exists, now ur saying that if that were to happen, Virgil may never have been static, here's the crazy part, if Virgil were to never have became static, then who saved Virgil's mom? Can't be Static, cus Virgil never became Static. Freaky right? U two think about that for a while, lol, that shit's too crazy to imagine. Although u know what!? Static did tell his mom about the Big Bang and the whole Bang Baby thing, so she might have let him go knowing he was gana be fine as well as gain super powers, on the other hand Virgil's mom is now alive, so there would be no reason to save her in the first place, so who the fuck saved her from death??? Woah!!! Shit's just too epic!!! Time Travel just... Just... Oh fuck time travel, makes no sense.
Christopher Corral Yeah and didn't Virgil mostly get his powers and soon decide to become Static because he was at the docks when that explosion happened anyway?
+BCRunch The Big Bang incident was a massive gang war that happened 5 or 6 years _after_ the riots that took his mom's life. Virgil was only 8 or 9 when she died, and in this time, he's about 15. earlier in the episode, he'd said he'd had problems remembering how she looked, which was what made this so poignant.
This episode of static shock holds a special place in my heart, I too lost my mom to breast cancer. When I first saw this episode I wanted to hug Virgil Hawkins for I know that sad felling. The fact that Virgil Hawkins static shock tried to save his mom from her death, made me love & respect him & his creator Dwayne McDuffie (RIP) even more. I still hate Nina Crocker Time Zone in this episode cause the idiot decided to get rid of her powers of time manipulation, aside from that I cry every time Virgil Hawkins static shock tries to save his mom.
Unfortunately, this is true. You can't really change the past. And even if you could actually travel back into the past, this is how it would be. That past would become your future, & your current present would then become the past, which can't be automatically altered by your brand-new future.
His mom does end up passing away anyway, as events in time cannot be fully altered, and when Virgil goes back home his mom isn't there when he calls for her. His dad hears him and comforts Virgil while he cries ;(. What a powerful, heartwrenching episode that in my opinion has not been matched to this day.
Says you but did you Justice League episode Savage time Vandal Savage altered world war 2 allies Lost world war II because of him and I change the future proving that you can alter things fully because he did
I find Virgil's reaction very unreal. His mom didn't just die from a sickness, she was murdered. His first reaction to seeing her again should have been a ride of overwhelming joy and sadness. In short, he should be crying.
Considering Virgil's life as a superhero so far. He's experienced so much emotional distress already that he likely can compartmentalize it better until the action dies down
I wish Flashback had a two part episode so we can see the outcome of the change that V done and learns that some things were meant to be and changing them isn't going to make it better🥺 But nonetheless I still love this episode now and forever❤✊🏼️
Definitely the most underated superhero show. I remember trying hard to finish my homework before 8pm every single day so i can watch an episode of Static. On Halloween my costume is Static while other kids dressing up as batman or superman in my school has no clue who Static is. Static was a big part of my life growing up,not Batman, not superman, not even JL. Just Static.
Hex Maniac Gabby I don't think so, they're best buds. Plus I'm not sure if he's out or not. And even if he did, they'll probably be just best friends as Virgil is straight.
This reminds me like that other episode frozen out and both static and permafrost lost both of their Moms was pure painful. back in 90s i was be able to understand that clearly it's our job to protect Mother from any harm's way no matter the cost. Every Mothers are the reason we all born to live, protected us for starters, so its our turn to do the same thing, that's what sons and daughters do for a living rather things goes good or bad, better or worse we will always give Mom more loving❤ and learn all the time had.
yep this show needs to come back i may be a marvel but this show gave reasons to do good things and if they show static on teen titans go im gonna be pissed
Man this episode really messed me up when I was a kid. I had lost my grandma close to this time. But I’m still glad they did it though. It’s a great episode!!
no matter how many years had passed since this show was canceled this episode will forever be the heaviest episode ever since and it made me cry and made me appreciate my own mother
