Reading Trail of Blood, envokes so many emotions in me. Shock, disgust, anger, fear, confusion, and sorrow. Not just for the son but for the mother. Reading the books, I get the feeling that there is some sort of untreated mental illness she's suffering from, and desperately needs help. But then again there are moments where she acts so sound of mind and in control, that it makes my blood run cold. So my initial theory comes into question time and time again. One thing I know for certain is that she is never going to admit what she did (no spoilers). She'll pretend it was an accident, or put the blame on someone else... probably her son
@phantomflower6749
@phantomflower6749 3 года назад
@DSVoid true. That's another reason why this story is so well done. We're only seeing things from the son's perspective. We're not given a whole lot of input from other characters. We're left just as confused, alone, and afraid as the main character. This manga gives you a feeling of isolation in a dangerous situation

There is a mental disorder, called postpartum depression where the mother basically looses all feelings over the child. It's really sad and the mother seemed to have had a really bad hit of it. To the point that she did the stuff that she did. It's treally interesting to see how he ends it, because with that point of view that the mother is not healthy in the head and that she in of herself is a victim and not the villain. The manga kinda shows her as a horrible villain. when, if they go to that place, is actually suffering as much as the child.
@kaitlyncoughlin1860
@kaitlyncoughlin1860 3 года назад
In my opinion, she stopped being the victim the moment she started abusing her son.
@TheCherrylover85
@TheCherrylover85 3 года назад
@@kaitlyncoughlin1860 Symptoms of postpartum psychosis can include: Delusions or strange beliefs Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there) Feeling very irritated Hyperactivity Decreased need for or inability to sleep Paranoia and suspiciousness Rapid mood swings Difficulty communicating at times The most significant risk factors for postpartum psychosis are a personal or family history of bipolar disorder, or a previous psychotic episode. Looks like his Mom’s mental health went unchecked for a very long time, and it spiraled from there. I find it hard to put her in such a narrow category as simply the "Villain" with these factors. What scary is that these things happen in real life! Andrea Yates is a prime example.
@kaitlyncoughlin1860
@kaitlyncoughlin1860 3 года назад
@@TheCherrylover85 So? This story is about the abuse the son faces because of his mother, the fact that the mother is also (potentially) suffering from an untreated mental illness is irrelevant as it doesn’t cancel out or excuse the mental trauma the son is now experiencing. It doesn’t excuse her literally attempting to murder her nephew. Yes it’s sad, and there should be empathy for those that suffer from postpartum depression as well as more education on the subject to prevent stuff like this but that doesn’t excuse anything. I’ve had many friends gaslighted by parents when they’ve tried to confront them about their mistreatment, the excuse is always the same, “Oh I had such and such going on so you can’t hold anything I did against me. Get over it.” Untreated mental illness as an excuse does not make someone less of a “villain” in the victims life.
@TheCherrylover85
@TheCherrylover85 3 года назад
@@kaitlyncoughlin1860 Warning, I wrote a damn book. Feel free to ignore or engage in discussion if you wish! I see your view, and agree to a point. However, I believe her mental illness should not be deemed irrelevant- but closely analyzed and understood in order to show how the mental capacity of a single individual is capable of so much destruction, ways to prevent it, or could have been prevented! It should not be swept under the rug. I have to preface this by saying : I am not excusing her actions by any means - she traumatized her son beyond repair, and I agree mental illness is not an excuse to harm a helpless child, period! The only thing I want others to recognize, is that she isn’t simply a plain, evil villain that kills and abuses her child simply from the joy of it. I genuinely think that she wanted to try as a mother, but it became extremely twisted in her delusions. The thing that terrifies me about this story is that it is so real, and can happen to anyone...even worse has happened, like I mentioned with Andrea Yates. There is immense amount of gaslighting, manipulation, and abuse to a disturbing degree, and I am not making light of Seiichi’s situation at all, or any victims for that matter. I sincerely hope that you don’t see my comment as doing such. (Spoilers if you haven’t read past chapter 60!!) **** She attempted infanticide - shortly after, she became obsessive about his well-being, developed delusions, and displayed extreme self-destructive and suicidal behaviors, common in mothers with Postpartum Psychosis. I just feel like we shouldn’t immediately villainize these women, who feel so alone in the world to the point that they hallucinate harming their own children and themselves. It’s an extreme tragedy, I believe, on both ends of the spectrum. You could see a small glimpse into her own mind, how Seiichi interpreted her actions. She thought she was ‘Atoning, in hindsight, setting him free from her burdens that she placed by the simple act of giving birth to him. She feared her own son...all due to her mental illness. Do you see where I’m getting at? It’s not excusing her, I just think it’s important to understand her. I understand her, but I do not excuse the reprehensible abuse that she administered. She didn’t even know it was her nephew she pushed, but an hallucination of the son she wanted to “Save.” The thing with these cases with PPD and PPP, is that they harm their children because they truly believe it is the sole option that’s left...and these disorders are often left unchecked FOR YEARS. I don’t even think she’d blame it all on her mental health, when she doesn’t even RECOGNIZE that she’s mentally ill herself! I love this manga because I think it allows for multiple perspectives, and opens up a taboo conversation- while bringing highlight onto postpartum disorders and how it greatly endangers the poor children involved. If we were to simply dismiss the mother as a villain (which is rightly deserved, as we are placed in the situation as the victim.) then I feel as though we’d be missing out on so much important information. There is much depth and layers to each and every one of these characters to be explored, and things aren’t what they always seem.
@kaitlyncoughlin1860
@kaitlyncoughlin1860 3 года назад
@@TheCherrylover85 Kudos to you for writing a book, not an easy feat. Do you mind giving the title? Part of the reason I love reading these kinds of stories is I find psychology fascinating. Also appreciate how you mentioned this was obviously a discussion, not an argument as clearly we agree on most points with just a few differences. Don’t mind spoilers, I believe I had to stop around chapter 40-45 due to entering my final year of college and needing to focus on senior design. Knowing this author and some of his other works, it would not surprise me if this manga was a critique of the cultural belief of “to be a mother is to suffer” and that these mothers are expected to endure this suffering in silence, without assistance because to seek assistance would mean that you were a bad mother and a failure in societies eyes. She was a single mother (again, been a while due to school) who was suffering and was being told by society that her suffering was to be expected so put a cork in it. Mothers lashing out at their children because they are struggling, whether from PPD or simply because they are exhausted, happens all the time. Babysitters aren’t really a thing in Japan, very rarely do mothers get breaks or time away from their child to care for themselves. Fairly certain I’ve read at most a mother will leave her child with her parents for a date night. It would be reasonable to assume that this story is meant to depict the (extreme but very real) repercussions of that societal standard for motherhood. Perhaps antagonist would be a better descriptor for the mother in this story and not “villain,” as by literary definition that is what she is, but with the overarching antagonist being society for engineering the conditions that molded her into the woman that she is? 🤔

Reminds me of this one show I watched where one of the characters is has this near-heartless, domineering personality that's basically a boss bitch (literally since she was the boss of a company). She really is like that and even her version of nice isn't exactly warm and welcoming which means sadness is rare. One of the reasons why it's rare is because she picks one day where she watches a bunch if sad movies alone to cry all her held back tears out and that date is called an "annual cry". Have you read the manga? And how are you? I hope you're alright now and if not, I hope you succeed in revenge.

@caprifoliaceousConfectioner
i just finished reading a handful of the chapters today and i must say, i was literally rubbing my forehead and pinching the bridge of my nose at some point. i was truly baffled and shocked by what was revealed in the story and it was all just too much pressure to grasp. i figured this story would be about something else and even led me to believe that maybe it was just another sick, twisted and disgusting 'love story' between a mother and son. it actually made me believe that at first due to how overprotective and how strange the mother was being. and i hope i'm not the only one but throughout the chapters. i had this really strong yet uncomfortable tension between seiko and seiichi and it was a really unbearable feeling i had throughout the entire story. every time they were in a panel together, i felt myself cry out for help and gained an urge to want to peel my skin off because i was that uncomfortable. but anyway, as i spiraled down even more into the chapters, that's when the sadness and confusion began to really hit me. i wasn't sure who to believe or WHAT to believe anymore. i wasn't sure if the mom is innocent or if seiichi is innocent, i wasn't even sure who to believe or who to side with anymore because of how twisted and confusing it became. the truth really started to hurt almost. the chapters as well really led me to as well believe that seiiko was just a truly horrible mother that manipulated seiichi all this time but when seiichi told his side of the story, instead he was the one making her so miserable all the time. but i can't really say i feel bad for the mom, considering she had dropped her son off a cliff and shrugged it off normally because he didn't die from the fall. and just said, "let's go home!" i don't know, honestly, most of the information i had typed down probably doesn't even make any sense. i'm completely at a loss of words because of this story and i have so much to process. it was an amazing read however and the art is portrayed beautifully.

After reading the last arc (before the time skip), I’m feeling meh about the story. Sure, it makes sense why the story would do a complete 180 (for those who know), but now I just feel really bad for Osabe at this point. The dude’s suffered A LOT and it doesn’t seem like it’s going to let up at all (latest chapter). I understand that’s how Oshimi’s work is, having read Flowers of Evil and Happiness. But there was more moments of levity before the time skip in Flowers. Seeing the relationship between Kasuga and Tokiwa grow was heartwarming. A “light in the darkness”, to use Masked Man’s words. Now, contrast that when Osabe sees Fukiishi for the first time in forever. Dude can’t catch a break! Sorry for the long rant, btw.

Twist and turns are an understatement. I am so hyped for the next chapters; everything until now has been from the perspective of Sei and the gradual shift to the genuine perspective of the Mother makes it so amazing..! A recurring theme within Oshimi's mangas I have found so far (Aku no Hana and Happiness actually...) is that characters grow up and things just move along seemlessly and gracefully. I feel like in Chi no Wadachi, the same will happen. With Sei all grown up, or hell, even having the mother being geriatric... Oshimi is a genius, nevertheless!

I haven't read this yet, but the genuine curiosity is there. But I am also hesitant because these series would kinda trigger me on so many ways. The way supereyepatchwolf and you explain what this is, it really gives me repressed memories coming back to whack me in the head. The emotions in here I believe genuinely exists in real life but less dramatized. Because I do feel that my mother is someone like the mother in this manga, but on a scale of a tenth of psychosis. A mother figure who mastered semantics and manipulation for shits and giggles. A power trip that leads victims out of the hold of society. A mother who never wants their offspring out of their nests for the excuse of love and protection but in truth, it is only for the mother's desire to express the subtle narcissistic power of the idolatry of motherhood.

Anyone's that dealt with a mentally unstable abuser that inflicts years of emotional and psychological abuse on you can certainly relate to this story. It doesn't feel like a yandere story at all to me, it feels like a very real and terrifying depiction of dealing with an emotionally distant, narcissistic abuser that suffers from untreated personality disorders caused by trauma and neglect. @@TheDarknessWithin11 His Deus Ex Machina section pissed me off the most because he has three really good cases he could have used, those being Nanaos family sword, the silver arrow, and the final getsuga(although I would argue that isn’t as big of a deal as the other two as it didn’t straight up win him the fight it just gave Urahara an opening), but instead he chooses to focus on Uryu Quincy equipment. Which makes sense as Uryu is literally the only Quincy left and is explicitly sated to use all of their techniques which is established to require equipment it most circumstances. And then he pulls an even worse example saying that every single time someone uses a SHIKAI it is a deus ex machina. At the end of the day this is really just Eyepatch Wolfs subjective distaste of a power system manifesting itself as extremely poor criticism thats he tries to make sound objective by throwing in that any display of said established and explained power system is just a deus ex machina used to win every fight. Which is so absurd that it has led me to conclude that he just has an irrational dislike of Bleach that makes him view a lot of the aspects of the series in the worst light possible while giving other series a pass.
