Yup, I've become almost completely adverse to eating outside food, mostly _because_ I read labels an dmost of it is such crap. Sometimes, maybe it's easy to fast until you get somewhere it's "safe" to eat. I feel almost orthorexic, but I know it's them, not me.

Early on in the process of changing how I eat, I was not very sophisticated about the absolute need to read ingredients on the labels. Keto doesn’t mean it actually is okay to eat. Shocking that prepackaged foods are lawfully allowed to stick a “ Keto” or “ Keto Friendly “ label on just about anything at all. I don’t even try to do a strict Keto diet, at 20 grams of CHO. That is way too serious for me. But, I still cut carbs as much as I can without counting every single carb. I am not inclined to be strict about how towels are folded, dishwashers, are loaded, or what kind of vehicle I drive, so it follows that I am not going to obsess over carbs. That’s just me. Let’s say that I want to be selective and nominally prudent about my carb intake so I always read the label.

My husband was once 436lbs and he's now at 190 and has been at that weight for several years now. He did it by going keto. We travelled for work when he started so we learned fast that you have to get creative. Go to the grocery store, buy pepperoni sticks, beef jerky, carrots.... stuff that doesn't really need a fridge. Then, if we went to fast food, we'd get a grilled chicken sandwich, no bun, extra lettuce, breakfast wraps can be quite low in carbs. The one mistake we made was salad. You would think salad would be healthy. It isn't, not at fast food. Its doable. You'll get some weird looks, but you can do it. April 2017 and its august 2023, he never looked back. Its not a diet, guys. Its a complete lifestyle change. Forever... but he gets just as excited about cauliflower as he used to get about a double cheeseburger from McDonald's. Your tastebuds change😊

Some fast food places like Taco Bell and McDonalds now have options for removing the higher carb elements. You can ask for a bunless burger at McDonald's and other burger joints.

While I focus on just eating low carb and healthy ( not keto per say) I still find it’s best to just pack as much as you can from home to stay healthy and then when I get to my destination I can find way better options with way better dining options!

Yeah, I'm thinking boiled eggs, "safe" beef sticks, biltong, and maybe even some cheese. Fortunately, I don't get too far away very often. Even before I was keto, I used to make sandwiches and pack stuff like nuts. Now I've gotten even more picky. Maybe things like celery and a home made dip would be safe. Sometimes I like to snack on sardines over pork rinds with guacamole. That would be pretty quick to pack, and better than stuff like nuts and cheese (for me, because those can be easy to overeat.)

Exactly just because your on vacation isn’t a reason to eat junk fast food. It can’t be healthy. I make sure I’m weighing my Mayo and cheese out and I bring my little food scale. Keeping up with calories is a BIG thing no one talks about. Just because it’s zero carb you will get fat and you can be over weight on keto.

I'm on day 5 keto and I'm feeling amazing. I did keto for a year two years ago and I cannot believe it took me this long to go back. I felt like crap for 2 years! I knew I wasn't doing well with my higher carb diet because it was like I never had enough coffee and I was exhausted all of the time. So glad I'm finally taking back control of my health and your channel has been amazing because life's kind of fast paced and sometimes I need quick fixes even though I love mostly a clean keto life. Ketones are almost addictive. I feel so much better when my ketones are in the therapeutic range-but I have degenerative disc disease, so I learned to leverage it to treat the spinal inflammation after I beat diabetes. In an odd way, that "keeps me" keto. I never cheat, in the way some people mean (I do have unplanned meals, and eat "keto krap," nuts and cheese too often.)

I tried keto before I struggled . So Know I just eat high protein like eating 4 to 5 eggs everyday with avocado after my fast. I drink water all day long. I love my salmon and do low carb usually eat carb at for my dinner.. if I eat at Wendy’s ill put my burgers over my salad.

Interesting! You should look at what ingredients they use, though. Could be a deal-breaker if they add synthetic fiber and claim it only has "1 net carb."

While traveling, I buy the double roast beef at Arbys, no bun, then use Carb Counter tortillas. While traveling I bring a 4 inch silicone bowl, put in some ham pieces, some shredded cheese, stir in 2 eggs, microwave 3 minutes, looks like a muffin but it is a ham & cheese omelette. I also preheat a thermos + 2 eggs with hot tap water, empty water then replace with boiling water, hard boiled eggs in 1 hour. I also have a 6 inch silicone cake mold, put a 1/2 pound hamburger patty in silicone bowl, microwave 4 minutes, turn over and microwave one minute, cooked hamburger.

"SOLA" has excellent buns/bread that does not spike glucose in most people, & we often find it in the freezer section. It's one of the only bread items I've ever bought that keeps super well in the freezer~ just take out what you need, & it's fresh & perfect every time. Love this brand! (*Orange wrapper, FYI)

For the last year I fast on travel days either on the road or in the air. It saves time and the difficulty of finding something good to eat. Since I’m in ketosis I dont feel hungry and I’m satisfied with coffee and electrolyte water.

Wendy’s burgers over McDonalds and go to ALDIs for the low carb Keto buns and bread (contains gluten, but inexpensive and tasty). Chick fil A also will do grilled chicken tenderloin and have salads. Chipotle all day long! Unwiches from J Johns!

When I’m out and want a quick lunch, I’ll go to Walmart for a a couple of hard boiled eggs and a package of smoked salmon. Or a rotisserie chicken that will provide 2 meals. Or a large Fage yogurt, 240 calories and very filling. Not as convenient as a drive through, but more options.

Muchas Gracias is my go to Mexican food restaurant. (may not be in all states) I get the Burritos: Carnitas, Adobada, Chx or Steak fajita, Machaca breakfast. They don't have rice or beans in them and they're loaded! To go, and swap out the tortilla when I get home!

Ingredients are super important, not just carb counts. Majority have sugar, that sugar starts my craving cycle 😢, not to mention all the horrible vegetable oils. Having homemade food prepared in advance keeps me on-track, no cravings, no stalls, etc…

When ordering a bunless burger ask if they can substitute extra lettuce, pickles and tomatoes for the bun. They'll often pile it on.

Good info. I’ve been doing keto for over 7 years now and eating out is such a challenge I really don’t enjoy it anymore. Even if I can keep the carbs low I still worry about dodging vegetable oils. I noticed at 5 Guys for example that they use some type of oil on the griddle to cook their burgers. They also deep fry the bacon. I’d rather go to a Whole Foods and get some hard boiled eggs, sardines, cheese and veggies like bell peppers, broccoli, celery. I know… I’m weird.

I’m always impressed that people can do keto for so long. What do you do for food when you travel or leave the country for food? Do you only stay at places with kitchenettes?

@@thoughtsandslayers3917 Let’s just say I have been properly motivated to go on a keto diet and it has since become a lifestyle. I was overweight, felt sluggish, had hypertension (high blood pressure), skin tags, cataracts and hearts disease runs in my family. I believe the underlying cause to all this is chronic high insulin from a high carb/sugar diet. Reversed all this and feel so much better going low carb. Thinking of trying carnivore as it is the least inflammatory diet. I have booked hotel rooms with kitchenettes but cooking tends to stink up the place.

It's not even just the oils themselves, but how they're used. Some restaurants let the oils they used get pretty nasty. I stopped eating french fries out and about even before I was watching my carbs.

I rarely do packaged Keto food. When I am outside, I look for Chipotle salad bowl without rice or beans. Or bring some boil eggs, cans of sardines or tuna and some macadamia nuts just to get though a meal. Sometime I even just skip the meal. I almost always just look for salads or cooked vegis and some meats. And yes, I don’t use any of the salad dressing given. Lettuce wrap no sauces hamburger is a good option for me too. Pretty easy to find.

Wendy’s is good low carb place. Will make bun less burgers. Plus Southwest avocado salad is great. Even entire dressing packet is 4 carbs. Use olive oil in dressing. You can substitute spicy chicken for roast but will add 30+ carbs. Sorry frosty is off limits

Carbonaut also makes hotdog buns and hamburger buns and we get them when we can't get to Aldis. They're not bad but the best keto buns we've found are at Aldis. They usually have keto hamburger buns but the hotdog buns can be hard to find. I've recently discovered King Arthur keto pizza mix and have started making my own buns....works out to about 8 carbs per 6 buns.

I wish it was that simple. I've tried several different brands of keto buns and have yet to find one that doesn't spike my blood sugar, much less one that doesn't have to be toasted to be edible. Same with the keto wraps. If I have to eat fast food, it's a Hardee's burger with a lettuce wrap. Just have plenty of napkins on hand.

If you look at the ingredients of those breads, everything listed will spike your insulin. It's "keto" because they use a sweetener that isn't supposed to spike it.

When I travel, I get sliced hard cheese and a good quality lunch meat. Then roll up the meat in the cheese. This is a lot cheaper.

The Starbucks egg bites are nine grams each one for a total of 18 grams! I love them but was losing slowly and eating them every day. I was curious and called Starbucks and found this out.

Funny experience while traveling in Riga Latvia (Northern Europe). During my salmon order at a local restaurant, I mentioned that I am on a very low carb diet, waitress responded that “Its ok we do not serve carbohydrates”: Amazing that she did not know what carbohydrates were. OMG, what are they teaching in school these days…

Thanks for the video. As usual you are a great resource for those on the Keto diet ir just trying to eat a little better. I just can't waste all of that money, i.e. just eating the egg and sausage from the breakfast sandwich at Starbucks. Especially these days. Swapping out just seems like a waste too. I know this works for a lot of people. I just cannot financially justify doing these things. I do think it's great that you made this video for those who don't mind these things. It gives them more ideas.

GIRL! El Pollo Loco has a keto chicken avocado salad AND/OR burrito w keto tortilla you can order. I get them both w a large diet coke and I'm good to go!

When I did keto I ate the el pollo loco double chicken avocado salad once or twice a week. Didn’t eat the corn but the rest was fine.

I found a flax seed tortilla that was very good. While relatively low carb, they are very small- like around the size of a street taco tortilla. Subway is now carrying a Keto bread for their sandwiches for those who like low carbs. I am not sure if they still have it, because I have not eaten at KFC in a long time (too expensive for what the customer gets for me to bother with,) but, they used to have a baked chicken option. Also, many grocery stores now have full service delis where you can get chicken and some have both fried and baked, along with an assortment of salads. Granted, grocery stores are generally not exceptionally close to the highway. However, most cellphones nowadays have a GPS installed in them with a search feature.

Hmm…still hard for me. What bugs me about eating out and manufactured food is all the seed oils, over and above the carbs. At least manufactured food has labels-and that has given me a feel for how much crap is in food. I mean, if they put that much crap in food when they have to put it on the label, imagine when they don't!

@@CarbageMan I feel that one, friend. I read labels and damn near everything I find in the grocery store has sugar and/or corn syrup in it. As a diabetic, that stuff is super bad for me. Even the breads that are advertised as healthy whole grain and/or multigrain has sugar and/or corn syrup in it. And NEVER buy anything labeled as 'fat free' because they add sugar to it to enhance the taste that is lost by removing the fat. The stuff is literally just as bad for the body, if not worse. As tot he seed oils, I have not done a lot of reading on them, so I am not sure why they are bad, when the seeds are reasonably healthy in their natural state. Though, I am sure it has something to do with h ow they are processed or what happens to them when heated. Different oils need to be used for different types of cooking.

@@GothicElf68 Yes, how they are processed with high heat and harsh toxic chemicals and how easily oxidized PUFAs are, combined together to create a real hazard. There are some good Dr Chris Knobbe lectures on youtube. Nina Teicholz has done a deep dive, as has Dr Cate Shanahan. Those are the big sources I recall. Cottonseed, soybean and canola seem to be the worst, but none of them is particularly good. The history-particularly of Crisco (cottonseed oil)-is scary. It was industrial waste before someone decided food should be cooked in it. They were literally trying to _get rid_ of it. The most common cheap oil today seems to be soybean, but the supposedly "heart healthy" ones are getting more popular. PS: Spoiler alert: they're already rancid and deoderized before they're even bottled.

I was surprised by the Starbucks egg bites. I thought they were a good keto option for me but after I enjoyed eating them I noticed I was having a blood sugar spike (rapid heart beat and flushing) 😣. I investigate further and found that I had just eaten 11 g of carbs. Bummer, they sure tasted yummy.

i lost 100 lbs and my secret is i never put a cap on fried chicken. my theory was that the carbs are super saturated in fat so their carbage was shriveled up and lost its juiice to the vat of oil. 3 to 5 thighs a few times a week, no problem. of of course, i dipped them in a sourcream/mayo sauce that i added pepper and salt in.
