Really excited to see the rest of your journey! Please look into the rules for flying drones both in Canada and the US. In the US you'd need to get your Part 107 since you're posting the videos on a RU-vid channel that you make money from. I'm in the US and have been studying for the Part 107 exam so I can do this for some fun projects. There are some pretty hefty fines if you break rules since they consider drones aircraft, would hate to see you get into trouble or fined for something while flying your drone.
Agreed...you definitely want to look into the regulations, registering your drone, etc. Some countries are NOT very drone friendly...not sure about Canada.
If you haven't already, you should look into getting your Part 107 license. The FAA can and will fine you for drone footage taken to use in your videos since they are considered commerical use.
One of the weird things you will find is that cell service in rural Canada is way better than the USA. They have laws that force more comprehensive coverage. But you better get a Canadian SIM card. Holy cow do they charge an arm and a leg for roaming using a US number up there! I did it once by accident and it cost me almost $600 for a half a day of cell phone use.
I did that trip twice to Fairbanks. Absolutely stunning scenery. If you can, go to Pink Mountain- the sunsets are breathtaking. Be safe, lots of wildlife on the roads and highways.
It would be cool to see you meet up with Foresty Forest (aka Simon Lamberts). He spends a lot of time in the BC back country. He’s about as humble and non-assuming as they come. Looking forward to seeing your journey onward to Alaska!
Have enough food and water for 7 days while you travel through the Yukon. Other RU-vidrs have complained about running out of both and food gets crazy expensive the more north you go. Safe travels and enjoy the drone. You’ll be a natural at it for sure.
Would be really Cool for you to meet camping with Steve. Don't know if it 100% lines up with your channel. But he definitely does some stealth camping.
Hi Ryan, when you pass through Fort St John, just after Dawson Creek, if you have time you, you should use your new drone to check out the Site C dam being built by BC Hydro, it’s almost finished now. Also lots of cool hikes & trails in Tumbler Ridge area but that’s kind of out of the way. Also in Fort St John, when you’re on the Alaska highway coming into town if you turn left at traffic lights (100st) where Wendy’s is and stay on 100st south all the way until it dead ends, there’s a great view point of the peace river! One last thing if you have time to grab a coffee stop at “Caffeination Station” they have a location in Taylor BC & Charlie Lake BC and also make videos. Have a great trip to the north!
Vanlife plus is in Calgary and Banff area... he is a great fellow you would enjoy meeting.... drop him a comment. He can tell you if forest fires are going to affect your routing. may your journeys cause great joy... Bing in New Orleans
Ryan, get rid of that dealer tag! Pick a suitable replacement on the road North! You are such an inspiration! We are literally in the process of buying our first trailer and tow vehicle now.
I am watching from Whitehorse Yukon. Hope u enjoy it here when u get here. Just a couple of things to note, our Walmart is small, no fresh food. You cannot camp overnight there either, our Walmart is cranky. I do see a lot of other RV'ers parking in Superstore or Save-on Foods. Also, everything here closes at like 10 pm. Some restaurants close later but, we are pretty remote. Once u hit the Alaska hwy, just be a bit prepared, there will be areas of no cell reception. Other than that, it is beautiful. Have a safe trip.
If you find you are looking for a place to camp for the night, you can park at Yukon University, just call security and ask them if you are able to. They usually allow it as long as they know you are there. If you do, just watch for bears, we usually have a couple hanging around.😊
Welcome to Canada 🇨🇦. You definitely need to go thru beautiful bc. And hour and a half outside of Vancouver, you need to go to Harrison hot springs and cultus lake. Would definitely show you around if you have the time🌺
Yo man, just so you know if you use this drone for footage for your channel you will need to get a drone pilot license in the USA. The FAA considers using the footage on your channel to be a commercial use so you will 100% need to get a professional license. Just letting you know because lots of vanlife channels run into this issue
Hi Ryan, If you are staying over night in Banff, you will have to get a paid campsite as it’s a National park and boondocking in a National park Carrie’s a $300 fine and possible court appearance if you are caught.
I will be up in Alberta next year to see my Canadian brother and sister and their families who I haven't seen in over 20 years. I am so excited. We went up there when I was kid into Edmonton and Banff and Calgary and my dad, my younger brother 9American like me0 and I had blast. I suggest getting into contact with youtubers like Mav, he knows alot about Canada and Alaska
This is going to be fun to watch. Regarding your water filter: I'd grab a sharpie and write on it the date you installed, that way you have a reference point. Either that, or put the "expiration" date of the filter in your phone's calendar, with a notification for the week before the due date.
I know it's a long way out, and I'll try to remind you later to tell you again. But one Alaskan hike that I'd recommend is the Thunderbird Falls hike in Chugiak. It's a hike that my family and I loved to do when we lived there. It is short and simple, and the waterfall is just an amazing view...
Steve Wallis and Foresty Forest are two of my favorite RU-vidrs, and coincidentally I think they should be in the Alberta area. Would be cool to see a meet-up!
Pro Tip: potable water is always marked grey and the pole the water was on had a grey cap n grey line so your safe. Hope you see this you’ll never have to wonder again lol
Hey Ryan love your videos dude! I live in Australia and you’ve honestly shown me van life is awesome and would definitely consider starting my own van life journey! Keep up the videos man they are the reason I get on RU-vid ❤️
Calgary Stampede is must to go when your in Calgary and Banff the hot springs pretty cool and Lake Louise just beautiful places to go visite. Enjoy your time in Alberta all the best.
I'd make sure to check everything (oil, suspension, etc) before going further north. Once you reach Yukon, there's nearly nothing there if anything happen.
Awesome! you finally got a drone, your videos are just gonna keep getting better! F&$K Yeah! Also a step 2 with Steve Wallis would be legendary! Much love, happy safe travels Ryan! ✌🏼
Dude you mentioned Collab suggestions. You should totally meet up with Foresty forest, have him take you on an extreme hike or something if he's into it 😂.
If you’re traveling through BC, if you are going to be anywhere near the Peachland /Kelowna area, they have absolutely gorgeous views and lots of hiking. I have a cousin whole lives there, and she posts the most spectacular views she’s photographed on her hikes.
You should contact David and Sondra from Big Truck Big Travels. They're in Alaska right now so they might be able to give some great information. Some of the areas you have to have permits and certain areas don't allow drones. Also, Bert and Jessica from Somers in Alaska live in North Pole. They might be about to give you some areas to camp because they camp with their family. Good luck and have a great and safe trip.
Since we have passed the shortest day of the year, I don't think you will run into much real darkness for the remainder of your trip. It will be more twilight and once you get to Fairbanks you should witness the sun coming down to the horizon and then head back up. That is really noticeable in Kotzebue but you might get to see it from Fairbanks. maybe a bit abbreviated though! I wish I could recommend places for you but it has just been too long since I drove the highway and too much has changed. The one benefit you will have will be that the road should be paved all the way and I did not have that privilege the number of times I drove the highway. Good luck and have fun seeing everything! I look forward to your videos!
I love Banff. You could maybe get a backcountry permit when you pay Park fee... I have not been to Banff in ages but Lake Louise overflow parking is a camping possibility. There is free day time parking at train station and you could take e bike. Do not pet the elk. you could stay at a casino with complementary overnight parking outside the park if you do not want to pay. .
I'm so glad you mentioned replacing your water filter. I used to go "camping" a lot in my travel trailer and the rule of thumb is 3-4 months lifespan on a water filter like yours.
Great video Ryan, I’m currently in Whitehorse, (broken down with my travel trailer). I drove up to the Arctic Ocean on the Dempster Hwy.. Make sure you stop in Watson Lake at the Sign Post Forest right on the highway. Put up a sticker or a sign. There’s almost a 100,000 signs there from all over the world. Also, stop at the Liard River Hot Springs. You can camp there as well. From Edmonton heading North it is all good paved roads except at Stewart Crossing they are doing some road construction and some of it is a bit rough. I just drove 4,700 miles one way on this trip. Enjoy your journey, the scenery is fantastic. Keep doing the great work you do!!
I watch other shows about driving to Alaska, and they recommend carrying cash for some places may not be an option for card or if their machine is down and you may need cash.
If you want to go a roundabout way to Edmonton you could go up to Jasper Alberta then across to Edmonton. Jasper isn't as nice as Banff but it is quite gorgeous.
I lived in Wasilla Alaska for about 11 years. If you want to go hiking somewhere really cool, hatchers pass in Wasilla Alaska is so pretty and one of my favorite places!
Ryan.. Take the Icefield Parkway through the Rocky Mountains and then up to Grand Prairie on Highway 40. The route you suggested is flat and boring. You would be doing a disservice by not taking a route through the Rockies. It's one of the most beautiful drives in the world.
I second Foresty Forest 100% and would throw in Vancity Vanlife, Vanlife Plus as well as Sharing the Wild. Enjoy your trip and thank you for taking us along with you.
