The only RU-vidr with the Deck that cared enough to explore the Steam Input. Thanks for this. As a fan of the Steam Controller, Steam Input is my number 2 reason to get this device, it is just so versatile.

It's so crazy to me how little Steam Input and the Deck's controls on general are being covered. People seem to still not realize how big an enabler this is for handheld pc gaming. While I've always found Aya and other brands' handheld to be intriguing, I've only really considered buying a handheld PC since the Deck got announced...and that's because of the trackpads and Steam Input mostly, not only SteamOS. These features are such a game changer, or to put it under another light it specifically DOESN'T change the games since you can play so many of them regardless of what kind of input the developer considered for their game.

This is exactly why I love my Steam Controller and why I'm excited to get my Deck! The controls are definitely underhyped on here. The customization options are on another level and they're taken for granted. It's the main thing that immerses you in the game, and the fact that you can customize them on such a granular level with Steam input is mind-blowing!

Thank you for putting so much effort into showing Steam Input. I have been absolutely in love with it since I got my Steam Controller. But it seems like people don't understand how powerful this utility ACTUALLY is. :) This video showcase that perfectly!

I have to say that my favorite setup for these sorts of MMOs has been to mimic FFXIV's "Cross Hotbar" setup with the triggers enabling ABXY + the DPad for abilities, so 8 buttons on each trigger (including both). I've got that setup with Star Trek Online right now and it's great, especially their approach to Trigger + Shoulder Button = Tab Target, so you can keep targeting while moving. THANK YOU SO MUCH for showing Button Chords! I was trying to figure out how to do both triggers held down and this makes a huge amount of sense!

Never got a Steam Controller so I never digged into Steam Input. But man, is it glorious. I can't believe a feature so game changing went under the radar for so long.
@werpu12
@werpu12 2 года назад
Well some of the best stuff of steam input was added 1-2 years into the lifespan of the steam controller, but yes, most testers simply did not get it and dismissed the controller as a gimmic. People have gotten it however over time what potential this controller had and thats also the reason why it is now highly regarded as one of the most innovative controllers of all time. I am glad that valve did not remove the touchpads, they make the controller really stand out over the normal xbox based controller average console. You can use a ton of functions also with a standard controller and steam input but you will lose the touch pad based mouse control or touch pad based custom radial menus you can set up and also you will lose gyro aim.

Thanks for this. Thankfully I got my Deck already and mingled with some of it but being able to configure sequences for non controller optimized games is huge. The amount of customization possible is crazy. Makes me regret that I never really did warm up to my Steam Controller in the past.

As a keyboard guy who has always heavily customized his inputs I’ve been watching old steam input videos as I knew that the steam input system was something that I’d like a lot. You just added a whole new level I was not aware of. I had seen and thought the radial menu stuff was incredibly useful but I had never seen these double press functions that you did. That will be useful. I had seen a single key to activate an action layer but not two. I can see some intriguing possibilities for that. Nice vid. I look forward to more. I can’t wait for Q3 to try all this out on my deck. I’m sure I’ll be back rewatching this once I have mine in my hands as I try theses methods out.

All your layouts are actually also available in the old big picture editor of the desktop mode Steam Client. In there you can set the icon or add a name, both of which are currently unavailable in the new edit UI. However they do both show up when viewing or using the layout in the new gaming mode and you can continue to use the new UI to edit other buttons (buttons with icons or names will only revert when you edit that particular button)

Thank you for these videos, they are great. a question, for WoW i have it set up the right stick is touch is right click + mouse to control camera , but when i have my finger on it and then try to select a button on the left side with my thumb it will spin the camera because it thinks i moving my mouse to it and holding right mouse. Is there a way to prevent this besides letting go of the right stick? For instance is there a way to let the touchscreen overrule/negate any other command?

I've always been a touch menu user, but the radial menu's ability to cancel an action by returning to the center of the menu is nice. The only downside is that with a touch menu, the icons can still be decently sized, even with 16 of them (Yes, I use 16 actions in a touch menu. Civ V.) Don't forget you can set up an action set which is active when holding one of your back paddles. I use this to access some lesser-used keyboard shortcuts in a second touch/radial menu on the same pad.

Do you know how I could do the same for Skyrim? Skyrim works perfectly but because of the controller layout, I’m limited to 2 hotkeys which is awful. However when I try to use the mouse and keyboard layout to remap everything and get hotkeys, Skyrim won’t recognise the steam deck as a keyboard/mouse :( any ideas?

Is there anyway to get the standard Xbox controller to work as gamepad? 2. My left trigger stays zoomed in when I aim instead of going back to hip fire when I release it.
