Unique sight of various steamboats on the Coventry Canal taking part in the annual Coventry Boat Rally, June 2014. Travel along with SBA ( The Steamboat Association of Great Britain) members and learn more about these steamboats.
Hats off to the gent for completing a boat AND having a go at constructing an engine. It doesn't matter if it wobbles about and sounds like "Vee twin reciprocating sacks of spanners". He built it himself. Well done.
Wonderful! I happened upon a steam launch meet, on Lake Nockamixon, in Southeast Pennsylvania, and one of the operators invited me along for the day. It was a great experience!
8:40 - "Can i buy your plans? - No, you can't. There aren't any. Here, have meh engine as a yardstick..." You ol' Britts are marvelous, when it comes to terms of use))
Hi reminds me of the African Queen the only thing missing was Rosey and Mr Alnut. The time you have put into your boat has been worth it well done nice job.
One of the lovely things about steam power is that it can be so lovingly quiet compared to ICE. Just mechanical noise and the chuff of exhausting steam if you aren't condensing.
I think the wheel @ 9:10 is much like the one in the story about a pirate who walked into a pub with a wheel sticking out of his pants. The bartender said nothing about it for a while wishing to be polite but in time curiosity got the better of him and he asked the pirate, "is that a ships wheel sticking out of your pants?" Arrr, it is, and it''s drivin me nuts." I think these boats at one time were drawn by horses walking alongside the canal. My dad came from Newcastle and one of his expressions was "more nerve than a canal horse.'" Thanks for sharing.
this damm near brought a tear to my eye the steam whistle was great In America everyone wants 500 horse power and some silly 7 color paint job "Don't look at my boat / Look at Me" 'they got no soul - thanks for posting this
I am planning a 3" bore twin Stuart Sirius engine sea flea, we used to hydro plane them with 5hp outboards. A flash boiler and intake should work. Gas fired of course. Some nice boats out here,
Great short film, thanks for posting it, it must have taken a while to edit. The next Rally is June 17th and 18th 2016. There wasn't one in 2015 due to unforeseen circumstances
+Keith Ward Hi, glad you liked the film. I'll make a note of the dates for the next Rally, I think I've made a film of every Coventry Rally so-far. In 2014 we were lucky to be offered a trip on one of the boats after the lunch/pub stop. Yes. it did take some time to put together, bearing in mind we had two lots of footage from the two cameras to edit with.

Testing of pressure vessels used in public are very strict in UK. New boilers have to be constructed to proven design plans and materials. The first test is hydraulic to twice working pressure +10% for 10min. The steam test has to show working pressure gauge, water gauge and safety valves that will releive the pressure with a very active fire. There must be a minimum of 2 working methods for getting water into the boiler. The hydraulic test is valid for 5 years with a new boiler with a re test every 3 years after that. The steam test is every 12 months and can only be carried out with a valid hydraulic certificate in place. Given the relative low pressures, 100/150psi the boilers on these small boats and locomotives are very OTT in terms of construction.
That's correct. Cast-iron bridge built 1837 and it's solid as a rock. It was a a nice launch, unfortunately it is not mine. I was just lucky to be offered a ride.
What is the fuel source for the little steamers ??????? , there's smoke on one scene so is it coal ????? are there any powered by LPG ????? Just noticed with a closer look , coal .
Sorry, I can not find the name of the music all I can tell you is it's in the RU-vid audio library probably under Ambient. I think I used three different tracks in all.
Get a condenser do not waste all that heat, all you have to do is re-condense the steam and put it back to the boiler at 95deg. for minimal heat loss. That is why everybody else is.
Raymond Leggs It'd be like turning up to a muscle car rally with with a 2L turbo. Still, would be pretty neat. When I've got my pipedream hat on, I really want an electric outboard with a small gas turbine up front.
Steam boats good for weekehd fun , I Like . But for me survive in stupid Russia , I must te have modern speed boat with outboard eng. Honda -90 ...I am unLegal fisherman , I cutch - by nets a halibut , by diwing - oysters , sea cucumber ... Salute from VLadivostok .
Just curious what one of the boats is worth / cost? I would fuel mine with hot air from politicians and their wooden noses. Actually, I know a woman with a wooden nose, therefore she's a witch!
@@donepearce No, just think how many combustion engine cars and how many steam ships or locomotives are around today. There is a huge difference, plus many of the little steam ships are fired by wood, like people have little wood-stoves at home. wood is a comparetly neutral fuel.
@@paulhorn2665 Each one of those is simply one more, incredibly dirty combustion engine. It doesn't matter that it falls into a group of not many, it is just another source of pollution - exactly as is my car. The only difference is that my car produces much less of it. I live close to Little Venice and I enjoy walking along the canal towards the London Zoo. The walk is invariably spoiled somewhat by the stink of coal fires coming from the narrow boats.
@@donepearce If you have a problem with pollution move to the countryside and leave the city. On green fields there is clean air. Okay there is the beloved smell of pig shit then, awful, but no harm to the lungs! I tell you what, these ships are a minority of pollution makers, you could not even calculate the percentage of guilt of todays steamers of the CO2 production. We have ten of thousands diesel running and I prefer the smell and the comperatly "thick" particles of coal and wood fires more then the fine diesel-sulphur particles which wont stop at your bronchia and get into your lungs. Also stinks of mineral oils. And I tell you what: I am a crew member of an old steam tug, working my spare time many houres to run the ship and yes I love to smoke cigarettes on my beloved steamer :-) The retard Greta Thunberg and the eco-nuts can kiss my arse. Finito nuff said.
And I can't stand the design of massive pickup trucks that serve no functional purpose other than to compensate for the operator's tiny phallus and fragile ego, but you don't hear me whinging on about it.
