Steam OS on PC is actually GOOD?!

In this video I explore just how good Steam OS (HoloISO) is by deleting Windows and running it on my main PC. Is Linux finally usable enough for the average PC user?
Note: This video features my subjective experiences for entertainment purposes, it is not supposed to be a tutorial or objective review.

CORRECTIONS: Thanks to the comments that informed me about the following, I will update this pinned comment with anything else that needs correcting: - Apex Legends does in fact run on linux and is rated gold on ProtonDB - Maya does have a linux version and there is a package available on the AUR I'll be more sure to double check all my information in future videos, even that I make one-off throwaway comments about. Thanks for the support!

I just really hope Valve officially releases a proper PC version of SteamOS 3.x before Windows 10 goes out of support in 2025. My gaming computer is my final remaining Windows device, and gaming is the only reason why I still have yet to put it on Linux. I understand most of this can be achieved on Debian-based distros anyways, but Valve’s tools in SteamOS 3.x are pretty essential

@@christianlgolden With a non-SteamOS Linux distro, I'm highly tempted to rice the DE into NsCDE as I previously had successfully done with a Lenovo laptop on Debian 12.4. However, I've heard everything is less hand-holdy on Arch-based distros, so that's why I've been super hesitant to apply a comprehensive theme to my Steam Deck (outside of the few icons I've swapped in Steam OS' stock KDE). If I apply a fresh install of Garuda on my main gaming PC, I'm much more willing to take on a large-scale theme applicaion since it's not as specialized as SteamOS, but I have a feeling I'd become a regular of the Arch Forums (which could be great for me in the long run) before I have everything I want up and running. Though, if NsCDE is too much hassle, Garuda's flavor of KDE is *really nice* as is with lots of transparency affects across the UI ^^
@christianlgolden

@@TurboPikachu I will say that garuda is less hand holdy as with any arch, but that alot of what you would normaly need hand holding for is already done. Garuda is like a bunch of linux users looked at arch and said na....we can just make it simple. Simple software center, ALL the gaming stuff preinstalled "or installed with one click thru the welcome page.", etc. etc. It realy is the only "just works" distro I have found. Manjaro still required manual stuff, ubuntu still required manual stuff, mint still required manual stuff. Garuda fires up, asks you what you want, and then just runs. You click steam, you click start, you play game, Or you click lutis, click install, click start, play game, All the benefits of linux none of the bs.

You really don't need a Debian (or Arch) based distro, Steam runs on pretty much any distro these days. I'm personally running Fedora but like someone already mentioned Nobara seems to be a fork with tweaks that are good for gamers.
@TurboPikachu
@TurboPikachu 6 месяцев назад
@@chlorophyllphile I know most distros are fine, but some tools I do find quite essential. A couple big ones in SteamOS on my Steam Deck are GUI-based override toggles for v-sync and frame-limiting (since some games’ own frame-limiters like those in GTA 4 and recent Sonic games have terrible stuttering). Those would be some fantastic out-of-the-box options in a standalone SteamOS 3.x+ for PCs My main gaming PC currently on Windows 10 has AMD’s Radeon Software Center which has the aforementioned overrides for v-sync and frame-limiting but allows further global overrides that some games don’t have such settings for such as antialiasing and anisotropic filtering. I understand there isn’t a Radeon GUI for Linux, I’d want to be very well read up on any Linux equivalents for the aforementioned overrides if they exist, as well as an equivalent for RivaTuner(RTSS). To that end, both Garuda and Nobara sound like very good options

As for VR, Steam recently released the Steam Link App which works like Virtual Desktop or Air Link, but there's no official Linux binary *yet*. For office stuff, I generally use Google stuff, so it's online. For photo editing, while it's doesn't have many advanced features, the online Photopea is surprisingly strong.

Just chiming in to say that I'm another viewer who also found the musical interludes significantly louder than your speech, especially noticeable when using headphones. I had to turn the volume down quite a lot compared to the level I would normally have it set at. For GOG and EGS games you can use Heroic Launcher instead of fiddling around with Lutris. It also has excellent Proton tools that I wish Steam had. Any case, I wouldn't recommend using HoloISO (or any "console-like" distro) for regular PCs. What I can recommend for a similar-ish experience is EndeavourOS, which is basically Arch but already set up with a GUI (any GUI you want, Plasma is probably what you want though). Generally Arch based distros are the best for gaming since rolling release means faster updates, just may want to take backups a bit more serious than other distros and keep an lts kernel in the back pocket. More reliable updates than Windows though. Gamemode session is available in the AUR if you absolutely want it, but not as updated as the one in SteamOS, and only works for Radeon.
@SpatchyIsOnline
@SpatchyIsOnline 6 месяцев назад
As you could probably tell from some of my footage, I completely disabled the game mode UI as it doesn't play nice with multiple monitors in my experience. The reason I went with HoloISO was just because it had proton and all of Valve's pre-configured stuff out of the box which I thought would make it an easier pill to swallow for viewers who might be looking at this kind of thing for the first time.
@AQDuck
@AQDuck 6 месяцев назад
@@SpatchyIsOnline Proton is included in Steam (or Heroic), so no need to install it manually (though GE-Proton is worth using over regular/experimental 9/10 times, protonUp-qt on Flathub/Discover). The major downside of SteamOS is that it's immutable with no proper package manager, you _can_ use Pacman and AUR like any other Arch-based distro, but updates will wipe those since only your /home partition, and I believe /var, will be kept. Updates are also very slow on SteamOS since it comes as a single package and when Valve feels it's needed (it just got Plasma 5.27 last month where as it's been in the Arch repo since februrary, 5.27 is vastly more stable than 5.26).

About needing pulseaudio-alsa, that is a compatibility layer between two methods of working with audio on Linux, the PulseAudio server is installed and used on almost every distro in the last decade at least, considering you installed the video editor via AUR, it's strange it was not a requirement that is installed automatically. In general, I recommend first checking flatpak before trying other ways of installation, since the way flatpak is managed makes it more likely to have the latest version faster, and it may run better on your system since dependencies are managed in a way to ensure compatibility.

If you could turn up the volume between those sections or the music volume lower, that would be better Another thing to note is the audio and video is out of sync, make sure they're synced up in editing

Re:productivity apps: I think people overlook the Google suite- yes it’s cloud based, but since it’s also browser based you don’t have to tinker with anything and it can even save and open Microsoft based file formats as well as PDFs. Also one thing that unfortunately keeps me from switching is the fact that apparently installing more than one language is a nightmare no matter what distro you’re using and I use the Japanese language and keyboard heavily. If Linux continues to improve and as support for Windows 10 ends however I might seriously consider switching. imo, Linux has big potential to capture a significant crowd if they can iron out the remaining major kinks of the OS by 2025

Thanks for this video friend! I just found out about Microsoft's coming plan to charge us for our Windows licenses until we upgrade to the new Windows. That's the last straw for me, it's bye-bye Windows for the foreseeable future. And this is in a household with 10 Windows PC's and Laptops! I used Ubuntu exclusively about 12 years ago, but went back to Windows only about a year later, for Gaming/Video Editing/Music Production tasks. This last year's experience I've had with the Steam Deck and it's Arch-Linux based OS has me actually excited to fully dive in. I'm still pissed at Microsoft, since I bought full-featured Windows 10 licenses only 3 years ago or so for all my devices, but I am excited to convert all my PC's to SteamOS for my first full venture into Linux in a long while.

For some time, Linux may be a weird and challenging experience, but after a few years, when you get to know the ecosystem, apps, resolve hardware problems, customize the hell out of your system, then go back to Windows, for example for work, it feels odd, out of place, clunky, primitive, suboptimal. Everything you knew how to make on Linux easily, you need to find new ways on Windows, often times it doesn't work as well, or you need to install some paid app, that is worse than free Linux alternative... Yes, Linux has its own share of problems, but once you find your way around them, you start to forget about them and the experience of using Linux becomes pleasant and satisfying. And oh, please remember to back up your system and learn how to restore backups. It's a very important step, at least on usual Arch based systems. On Holo OS it's a different story, but still, better be safe.

Instead of SteamOS, i would use just regular Arch Linux instead, as when KDE Plasma is installed, it is basically SteamOS. The big difference between SteamOS and Arch Linux is that SteamOS has a locked root filesystem and SteamOS updates basically rewrite the root so packages like gcc, various SDK's and others get removed every update, unlike Arch. SteamOS also has it's own mirror of the AUR, and some packages will be different because, for just not there (although I've found most to be on it). I've also had many occurrences of pacman just flat out not working, because of letting stuff that's i don't understand. When i do get an actual PC (i daily drive the steam deck because that's the only computer i have other than an old Windows 11 laptop that's to slow to use) i do plan on installing plain Arch Linux with either KDE Plasma or awesome installed on X11 (as it seems to be the most supported graphics system). On my new machine i would try to install most of my apps through pacman because of the annoying sandboxing on flatpaks that messes with the filesystem in say VSCode where the terminal there isn't the actual system terminal and instead a sandboxed one, although the sandboxing shouldn't be too much of an issue for more regular users.

What the hell you are talking about? I mean about creating PDFs. There is a button in LibreOffice to save the current document to PDF. No special setup needed. Printing to PDF also works by default, also no setup needed. Ocular is a better PDF browser than Adobe, unless you have some document with scripts and forms, but those are rare. There are also tons of pdf utilities and apps, that are superior to those on Windows (usually trial, cluttered versions). There are apps for editing PDFs as well. In short, PDFs in Linux for the most part are a superior experience.

Linux, you have full control of everything you have on there, hell, even Microsoft use Linux to make Windows lol. Over the years, Linux slowly brought work arounds to get things to run, mainly because DirectX and a lot of fonts Microsoft have a copyright to, and thats the main reason why most games wouldn`t run on Linux, but Steam have been fantaststic for the Linux comunity, the reason is Steam Deck, it runs with Linux, and within months more and more games became Linux friendly using a program called Proton that lets you run games without DirectX. Ive not tried it myself because I use Linux Mint, but Steam OS is there all setup for steam games just to run. Microsoft snoop on everything you do, it slows connection speed and they sell the information, that is not done with Linux and most games run faster for me on Linux than they do on Windows. Dont get me wrong, I have my Windows key (fully legal) but if I had 2 computers, 1 with Windows and 1 with Linux, Id opt for Linux every time, Its safer as long as you only install legit Linux software, its way way faster to install. Everyone has their personal preferance, but I only have an OS to run the programs im interested in and Linux Mint does that for me in a faster, safer way. For thoes that dont know, Linux used to be Shell/CLI to install, but 90% of things now install like windows, If you worried Id start with Ubuntu or mint, as they are close to the way windows works, not identical but close, and there is a lot of infomation on sites like youtube for Ubuntu/Mint.

Hmm... I've also seen one other person complaining about this. The only thing I can think is that maybe the way the audio channels rendered into the final video somehow isn't supported properly on all devices? Which is weird because I assumed RU-vid's processing would mess with that stuff anyway. I'd super appreciate it if you could watch on a different device and let me know if you still experience the same issue. I feel like this video would have flopped as hard as all my others if the audio was bad for everyone...

Thanks for your input, I'm no expert on audio mixing but I did watch the video several times on two separate devices (my pc and my tv) and didn't notice any issues. Would appreciate advice if you have any to make sure I can make this sound better on a wider variety of setups.

@@SpatchyIsOnline Like I said, speech volume is so low I have to turn it way up to be able to hear, and then a some music comes out and my neighbours get disturbed by the volume of the sound. There should be some semblance of a balance between them. My preference would be the speech always slightly louder than the music clips, but if they are about the same, all is okay.

hopefully linux support becomes a bigger priority in the future, but as of now windows is just 100% better for running most games, since you'll typically lose performance running games under wine/proton that if you just used windows (also because the drivers for linux usually aren't that good)
@notjustforhackers4252
@notjustforhackers4252 6 месяцев назад
Nvidia drivers suck on Linux, both AMD and Intel are top notch and better than their Windows versions. Tom's Hardware recently posted benchmarks that proves Linux/Proton supported games run considerably better than they do on Windows. Not sure where you're getting your information.
@JorgeChavezX
@JorgeChavezX 6 месяцев назад
@@notjustforhackers4252 Developers of wine acknowledged it performs worse, literally a Google search would tell you this, and even with AMD's drivers, its 50/50 and depends on the game, usually if there is a native Linux version, then yes its better but via proton? Usually no

@tronscrolls I made a video about Steam OS because I wanted to make a video about Steam OS, and I tried to present it in a way that would be digestible for the average PC user. If you want to make a deep dive into Lutris, no one's stopping you. I certainly didn't shit on it, I expressed my frustrations with the number of steps needed to get one game to work, which just so happened to be the one game I wanted to play. For the record, I don't want to "talk shit to my commenters" as you put it, but if you talk to me with the attitude of an angry twitter user instead of a mature adult, you can expect a sarcastic response. Thanks for your comments though, they all help boost my video in the algorithm 😉
