Steam to Mallaig 1985 Driver's eye view

Video 125's first broadcast quality (at the time) Driver's eye view. This has been superseded by The Jacobite filmed in 2015 in HD. However, here is the original which still has a few points of interest. Firstly it was operated by BR. Secondly the line was still block signalled with semaphores (today it is by radio). Finally, the loco crew were traditional BR steam-experienced, sadly not often the case today.

A beautiful video showing the line in all it’s glory. Well done to those early engineers who overcame so many difficulties to give us this line. Thank you for enabling us to enjoy the scenery

I have all your BR era Scotland productions and they're all fantastic in their different ways. Steam To Mallaig Skye Train The Far North The West Highland The Northern Lights Plus Steam Through The Highlands with Clive Anderson. All of them are absolute goldmines of historical information for modellers. For instance the Network Southeast branded coaches at Inverness and the double-stagged station nameboard at Helmsdale. Wonderful stuff all round, thank you for uploading.

Great video, thanks for uploading it in full. These olders videos are of great interest to me as a my main interest in 1980s railways. Was a wee bit disappointed not to get a cab view of Glenfinnan Viaduct though.

You get a DEV of the viaduct on the JACOBITE (filmed in 2015 in HD).

My first Video125 VHS video along with SkyeTrain. Video125 set the standard for Cab ride videos from day one. A standard rarely copied by others.

Now this is what ScotRail should have aimed at, with their somewhat half-hearted attempt to show what is truly the most beautiful railway journey in the world! This video has all that the ScotRail version does not- the glorious summer scenery, and an interesting commentary that describes not just the line itself, but also it's history. Well done and thank you!

That is very kind of you but it is not up to modern standards which is why we re-filmed it using HD cameras and helicopter a few years back (also in summer sunshine) and called it The JACOBITE Driver's eye view Here's the preview: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_qqhQmvgtQg.html

Kind of you to say so. It is very old now of course. We re-filmed the line a couple of years back (called The Jacobite).

The Black 5 is my all time favourite locomotive, not only aesthetically pleasing they were the most versatile and effective workhorses of the LMS performing any task asked of them. Thankfully quite a few are preserved and also some BR class 5's as well.

Good to see the fireman look at the "Token" name when he collected it, unfortunately he did not remove it from the pouch to ensure he had the correct one.

This raises the question of why the original (which looks like it was shot on tape) was not shot on movie film - 16mm or larger. Had it been shot that way (like a lot of T.V shows made at that time) it could have been remastered almost up to modern standards.

What is never mentioned is the destruction of the original "Fort William " and the demolish of an absolute fantastic Victorian railway station for a road . This mentality was typical of Fort William planners, If it did not move tear it down was their mentality ,possibly still is ,so much lovely architectural buildings gone for ever replaced by concrete .

@@video125com The point is when it got towhat should have been the best bit DRIVERS VIEW it changed to looking at the driver from outside and not a DRIVERS VIEW of crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct.
@video125com

I thought you were referring to the whole production. That's a fair point. When crossing such an edifice, we try to please both camps. Showing the DEV at first, then cutting to the outside. Being pedantic, although obviously the driver can't see OUTSIDE his train, I bet he takes his eye off the track and looks at the view. Steam to Mallaig sold tens of thousands in its day and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first such criticism.

We've re=shot the route. The new 'Jacobite' Driver's eye view is in HD widescreen and comes complete with aerial views this time. hence the reason for not replicating Steam to Mallaig any more. Like all things, Steam to Mallaig is still historic for a number of reasons. It was filmed during BR days, it was before radio signalling was introduced, and it was driven and fired by men who originally worked on BR steam before modernisation. Even then, it was filmed 18 years after the end of BR steam. You can find The JACOBITE on our website and is available to buy on DVD, Blu-ray or download. www.video125.com
