This route learning/Driver's Eye View film takes us from Edinburgh to Carlisle on board a Class 350 EMU.
Although the speeds in this video have been checked for accuracy, they are for guidance only and drivers should always use official documentation to ensure they are aware of all line speeds.

This is so therapeutic, every train route in the country should do one of these videos it is a great way to view the scenery and stations.

Totally agree. I've watched them from all over the world and while I'm not really a fan of the American or Canadian railroads the scenery is nice. But my favourites are definitely the British one. Some good ones from the ice in Germany and tgv from France

Great video and just enough information to keep it interesting. After having taken many train journeys in the U.S. it's a blessed relief to travel by rail in the U.K. and get to my destinations quickly especially on mainline services. A few years ago I made the terrible mistake of being persuaded to travel by train from Chicago to Los Angeles and the 2,250 mile journey took almost 4 days. I've never complained about our train services since then.

I'm from The U.S...Sadly, I've never lived any place where there were passenger trains. I really liked the views of the countryside. And, I liked many of the old buildings, which are obviously still standing (and perhaps in use). They are much like the buildings you will find in smaller towns & cities that I am familiar with. While I haven't finished watching this video, I haven't seen the first sight of a "strip-mall". They're all over the place, here, and they're very unsightly. Thanks for this post. P.S. -- I noticed those big, round bales of hay in the open fields. Here, in The U.S., authorities are trying to pass legislation in order to make them illegal. When asked, "Why?"...they insisted that cows couldn't get a square meal.

Super video! You almost feel that you are in the cab racing along. Brilliant experience. Reminds me of a journey I did in s train of mark 1 cosches behind s class 85 back in the 1970's. Racing up Beatock at 95 mph under electric power seemed unreal! Ot eas fairly new then. Now ee rxpect it!
@ennohund9515
@ennohund9515 4 года назад
this is astonishing: you drive at a speed of 95 mp/h, then you get (at 0:13:04) a speed limit of 70 mp/h, which after a few 100 yards (at 0:13:11) is lifted to 95 mp/h again. I would have expected that the speed limit would have been displayed so much earlier that the train would have reached the speed reduction in time at the beginning of the bridge. Thanks for another perfect video and many greetings from the Taunus Mountains, Germany.
@jslonisch
@jslonisch 4 года назад
In the UK drivers are expected to know where speed restrictions are without advance signage like they have in say France. If you watch the video carefully you will see that the driver reduces speed well before the 70 sign so that he is only doing 70 across the viaduct.

@@marcgardner868 Please stay calm and wait, my hope is: Even England will in the end return to the EU, after Scotland, Ireland as a whole and Wales already will have returned to it. We all are Europeans, different, of course and exactly that is the fact, which makes us alltogether so strong and unique. I´m from south-west Germany, my region (Saarland, capital: Saarbrücken) had to change between France and Germany so often, that we just cannot rember anymore how often it happened (similar to the Borders region, today part of Scotland). There are old people in my village who had during their lifetime five different passports. And seven or eight times different money. Imagine! We here in this place enjoy the EU so much, no frontiers anymore, free mov to and fro. The folks on the other side nearby speak a bit different than we do here (french or the old lorrain dialect, which has german origins) and we harmonize very well. This way it should be everywhere in the world, at leat in our common Europe! Greetings!

@@ABC_DEF That is right, what you write, but Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England are separate states, under one crown (Her Majesty the Queen is very adorable, may she become at least 100 years old!), but never melted together to a real unity. Therefore this monarchy is called "UK". And not "Greater England" or so. Every part of the UK has its own souvereignity and can vote to stay in the UK or to leave. That´s democary, too. The big one, 'England is not allowed to dominate the smaller ones against their will. Greetings, and come what may, we´ll stay friends.
@ABC_DEF
@ABC_DEF 4 года назад
@@nickweiserfolz They are not separate states under one crown. That is a fundamental misconception. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are not states. There is only one state, the UK. England and Scotland stopped being separate states as long ago as 1707. Examples of separate states under one crown are the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Such a shame that the old footbridge to the L of the line over River Eden at 1:11:53 has now been completely dismantled by the BaR stewards - I last went over it a few years ago when it was fenced off at the town end, but when we were at school in St Anne's Hill up on the left we used it regularly during PE lessons to get to the Sheepmount athletics field. And my uncle and aunt from Christchurch were once doing a long distance walk through the area and a local advised THEM to use the footbridge too, as a convenient shortcut into town! Why on earth couldn't it have been repaired and made properly accessible to all?

Add in the need to adjust track cambers, profiles and possibly heavier rails and it becomes very expensive. Since trackage in Scotland is now under Scottish Government control and they are, quite rightly re-introduced formerly closed routes and electrifying some of the more frequently used routes there isn't the budget to upgrade the midcalder route.

I needed to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers. A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 37 Octagon and Every 17 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 142MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 142MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 17 Tonnes for all of those 142MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!! I didn't know class 350s operated into Edinburgh!? When did this start? As a Northern customer I feel a bit jealous as ScotRail customers get decent modern trains on virtually all their services while much of the Northern network is STILL served by clapped out old pacers!......though finally some withdrawals are starting to happen, thanks to newer DMUs cascaded from GWR and ironically, ScotRail. Stunning scenery along this line of course, goes without saying!

This train initially heads north out of Edinburgh Waverley through Haymarket before turning left to head west across Scotland. It joins the west coast mainline at Carstairs and then heads south to Carlisle. Years ago you could have travelled to Carlisle by heading south down the "Waverley Route" but sadly no longer.
@skin150263
@skin150263 4 года назад
I think there are four tracks between Waverley and Haymarket, and as these run basically east to west then there's a down south, down north, up south and up north as the tracks are in pairs on the north or south side. I thought there was a campaign to reopen the entire Waverley route to Carlisle. It has reopened as far as Tweedbank.

Now what I'm also wondering.... Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland, but Carlisle is in England, meaning this train must be passing the border between England and Scotland somewhere... Does somewhere know around where that border can be? And what I also noticed, is whenever there's a kind of a box on the road and the train passes over it I hear a "beep" and soon after a light-sign or traffic light, or how do you call that in English, is there, so I can't put the notion out of my head, these boxes cause this beep in order to warn for these traffic lights... Am I correct?

@@LNER_TRAINS22543 It's actually to keep the driver alert. Each time there's a beep he has to respond by pressing a button within a few seconds. If he doesn't respond then the trains power is automatically cut off and the brakes applied. On some new trains a message is also sent to the nearest control centre. There are times when health and safety is applied to benefit us all.

Novice question... Why are the signal lights flashing?
@AML2000
@AML2000 4 года назад
This happens with LED lights. They turn on and off at the frequency of the AC power (which I think is 50Hz in the UK). LEDs being diodes can only pass electricity in one direction. If the camera shutter is out of synch with that frequency, it sometimes captures the light when it is off. The human eye doesn't notice it and sees the light as being on all the time.

Been up and down that line numerous times and never understand why the Carstairs junction has not been improved and possibly taken over on to the old solum that's very visible off to the left. I am also puzzled as to whey why ripped out the Waverley route down to Carlisle that had a lot more stations/towns being served and kept this open.
@UserUCKANAOD8SlYguEhbCkUdlMQ
@UserUCKANAOD8SlYguEhbCkUdlMQ 4 года назад
Surely it makes sense to sort out Carstairs junction. You would probably take something like 5 minutes off a journey time. It doesn't sound much but it would add capacity as well with the trains not slowing down and speeding up for miles either end of the area.

@mousesunday
@mousesunday 4 года назад
When still state-controlled, British Rail was one of the first to achieve 125 mph / 200 km/h on mainline railways in the 1970s. Today most mainline and even branch lines are built to really high standards -- with dual track and continuously-welded rail to allow higher speed running, which is helped by having mostly just passenger service (no slow freight trains). Unfortunately most non-intercity passenger services, despite high density service and high passenger numbers, are not profitable, and rely on government subsidy heavily to maintain these transportation links in less-affluent areas.
