Is it okay to eat the whole peanut unshelled? Asking for a friend…

Let that friend know that it might be a little unsanitary and upset your stomach, but probably not super dangerous. At least that's what a friend told me..

Well it's never bad to have that extra fiber? cellulose? or whatever the shell is made from...i guess Secondly, I can't help but think of all the hands that touched it, because they assume people WON'T eat the shell...#nojudgingbutmanisthatisweird

I would not do this myself, on the reg. But I also don’t eat the leaves of strawberries, whereas my partner will pop the whole strawberry into his mouth and chomp down, no problem.

Artichokes -- the ultimate party food. Gather around the table, take your time, buckets of butter and your favourite drink. Artichokes go perfectly with a few slices of rib eye roast and chunks of fresh baguette. Dip them in the butter too. I like this year's party. Ode to Alison. I'm there.

I just wanna say I have that same pepper grinder and it is seriously amazing. I've never been so happy with a purchase in my life. One scrunch and it just dumps ground pepper. It's such a well made product I can see having for life. edit: name of the grinder is called the Unicorn Mills 6" Magnum Pepper Mill. Originally heard about it from Kenji Lopez Alt.

SAME. That grinding sound is pure ASMR and music to my ears. These grinders are manufactured in Nantucket, and last summer I was visiting the island around the time I was hankering to buy one so I reached out to them directly to pick up since I didn't want to order on Amazon. They couldn't have been nicer, someone met me via bicycle at the Hospital Thrift Shop to complete the transaction. 10/10 buying experience, 100/10 pepper grinding experience.

I grew up eating artichokes as well, thank you Grandma! Our family loved them so much, to keep peace, she would get smaller ones so that we each got our own and we didn't have to share including the heart, the best part! We were all supervised though when we got down to the end, she was terrified we would choke on the fibers, lol

Belated happy birthday! You completely changed my opinion about chicken and sheet pan dishes! I never make artichoke even though I love the artichoke heart taste, because dad used to cook them, then we'd dip the leaves in mayonnaise. I've been lazy and just bought marinated artichoke hearts. I can't remember if I've seen whole artichoke in a Danish supermarket (I'm Danish, Dad's American and I've lived with him in CA, but I live home in Denmark now) but if I see a whole artichoke in a supermarket, I'll definitely try this recipe and introduce my Danish husband and sons to something that's going to seem very exotic to them!

Wow, thank you for reminding me of a classic childhood dish that I had forgotten about in my adulthood. The only difference is my dad would make a little Mayo-based dipping sauce - I can’t remember exactly what was in it besides Mayo and lemon juice. Maybe also melted butter. All that to say, I saw artichokes at the farmer’s market the other week and if they’re there again tomorrow, I will be buying 2, or maybe 4!

Somehow I never knew that you were supposed to trim artichoke leaves 😅 I grew up eating steamed artichokes as well and my mom would just trim the stem and toss them straight into the pot, thorns and all! We just avoided getting pricked as we ate (adds a whole new layer to the idea of “working for your food”…but also they never really hurt)

I realize this vid is old, but artichoke season is now, and when I purchased 2 chokes on a whim, I had to rewatch this. I was hoping my 6 yr old daughter would help prep, but the only prep she cared about was assembling a charcuterie board to go with. However, her enthusiasm for artichokes as a main course is now firmly established for life. Such a fun food to eat. And delicious. We had no hearts leftover to make that bonus salad. You may not have invented the steamed artichoke, but your expertise yet again makes something a bit daunting totally approachable, and that damn anchovy butter is brilliant. Thanks for another banger. And happy belated birthday :)

This might be the best Home Movie yet… we are just coming into spring in my part of the world and this video has Big Spring Energy right down to the sex-positive sponsor and the unabashed yet breezy delight over a terrifying vegetable. I’ve never seen an artichoke being cooked (only had the hearts) and well it looks fun and easy and I want to try it!
@sueannesullivan3827
@sueannesullivan3827 2 года назад
Well, as usual, I loved this Home Movie. This one was especially wonderful for a couple of reasons. First reason, I love steamed artichokes and prep/cook/eat them the same way you do: trim and leave on some stem, stand up in pot, start eating with tougher outer leaves, and actually I eat a bit further in, for the tender inner leaves I hold the prickly purply top with my fingers and still try to bite off as much as possible, before I go for the heart. I make a mayo/butter/lemon juice/horseradish sauce for dipping but am inspired to try your butter/garlic/anchovy version. Second reason, my dad taught me to eat unshelled peanuts and it reminds me of being at White Sox baseball games with him. Now I usually eat them shelled, however. Maybe one peanut out of 20 I will eat with shell on. I just Googled this issue and there is quite a difference of opinion out there. Livestrong.com says: "Although peanut shells can be eaten, they can be contaminated with pesticides and might cause digestive issues." www.livestrong.com/article/493419-can-i-eat-peanut-shells/. However the National Peanut Board says "While to some it may not be conventional to eat unshelled peanuts, the National Peanut Board is here to say, you do you and keep on snacking." www.nationalpeanutboard.org/news/snacking-with-shells-on.htm. As always, the trick is to just keep Googling until you find the opinion that supports the one you already have and didn't intend to change anyway! Okay have to edit this because I thought of a third reason this episode is so great. I didn't eat artichokes as a young child as we never had them at home, so had them for the first time in college while at my boyfriend's house. His family was quite wealthy and I was intimidated by his house/parents etc. The first time I ate a meal with them, they served artichokes which of course I had no idea how to eat. Everyone else dug in and I imitated as best as I could but ended up trying to drag my teeth through the wrong ends of the leaves. I recall being corrected and none too gently. Yikes. So THANK YOU for kindly demonstrating the correct way to eat them so others don't have to suffer through a Mortifying Artichoke Moment.

I TOTALLY eat the peanut and sunflower shells too. I like the extra crunch and salt and the peanut shell in particular has a subtle sweetness. But there is a fine line, it is possible to hit a shell to peanut ratio where you have too much shell and then you end up with a mouthful of fiber that you have to spit out. But I do it anyway. I love it. YOU ARE NOT CRAZY Alison!

LOVE Alison Roman! Happy Birthday. Postcard: Vintage California 1960s West Hollywood: Shermart on Santa Monica Blvd. My mom tossed 1 artichoke into basket. Second shopping trip, (i am 5 yrs old). I toss in second artichoke: mom asks: "why did you do that?" me: "I like watching you eat them." She prepared artichokes for 5 people on a regular basis. Meyer Lemon garlic butter, and when got older, she invented recipe: smashed green peppercorns, garlic, mayo.
