This is a short tutorial on how to make a silk scarf using steam fixed silk paint and a microwave. Alison Beck from Silkcraft www.silkcraft.co.uk shows you how to make beautiful unique scarves. The colours are so vibrant and no two scarves can ever be the same.

Hi Alison, Thanks for the informative video. Silkcraft advertise their Microwave Silk Kit and suggest sprinkling salt on the silk, too. Have you done this before? Is it really OK for microwaving? Thanks! Teresa

You remove the salt after it drys on the silk... then steam it.

Hate the music. Not sure about the drops of stain method - but it would work as well if you painted a design or used gutta wouldn't it?

Iron it while it's still wet? Is that essential to the steam setting? Do you think this would work on a big silk piece like a kimono?

+Ra Lu HI - I iron it damp just to make ironing easier - by putting it in the microwave - this completes the steam setting. I'm not sure if you can do it on a kimono - if the fabric is quite heavy you may not find a microwave bowl large enough to accomodate it. So I'm sorry I can't advise if it would be suitable.

Yes, the answer to that is yes. I dye silk to make worship flags. I've dyed pieces as large as 180" X 55", which is larger than a Kimono. I wrap the dyed silk in plastic wrap and roll up, then place in a plastic bowl/container. Microwave on high for 5 min.
