Honestly, I'm surprised by the freedom of the steam app itself, I was able to get windows only non steam games to run on my Linux computer with steam compatibility no problem, I'm tempted to try windows only apps through steam compatibility and see what happens
I realize Steam OS was developed with the Steam Deck in mind, but paired with an APU in a small form factor desktop case (or a full-blown tower PC) I could absolutely see it becoming a popular alternative to console gaming, especially as decent gaming APUs and last-gen GPUs come down in price.
The grand majority of console gamers unsurprisingly play games that require anti-cheat on PC. Kernel anti-cheat is becoming much more common too, which will never work exclusively through Wine. The developers of those would likely have to make a native kernel module that wine can talk to. I highly doubt that'll happen.
Biggest issue is nvidia. They're Linux drivers are bullshit as far as I've herd. But due to them focusing heavily on AI they are apparently working on better drivers for Linux so here's to hoping that it will be good one day.
@@screwball992 Thankfully I am using a full AMD system and I'm hoping to switch to Steam OS and completely ditch Windows at some point, hopefully before the support for Windows 10 ends.
I'd say they've successfully identified the flaws of the steam machine 1.0 and a console is a real possibility at this point. I think Sony and Microsoft are both seeing the dollar signs in handheld demand and Valve is realizing the gaps between what they've failed at and what's going to grow the brand even further. I've always loved "mid" tier hardware and it's capability. The fact that Microsoft, Nintendo and Valve all have catered to it makes me think its a permanent fixture. This is fantasic, IMHO.
everyone's talking about a console, but besides a bit of TV QOL features (e.g. power on from controller, getting their damn dock working on everyone's TVs, etc), I'm not sure what I'd want out of a console that I don't already have out of the deck. however I'd be quite interested to hear what people think the advantages would be. I might also agree with them if I know what they are. If it's console exclusives, then eff that. it'd be exactly the opposite of what I want out of valve's ecosystem. If it's beefier hardware, then - well, okay I can get behind that!
@@OfficialMZay the LCD is great for dual booting. The OLED is.. meh. I'm a little disappointed about the lack of drivers, honestly. I wasn't expecting them to be released on "valve time"
The added CEC functionality is huge. Previously if you used the deck, docked, as a media device there wasn't really a overall good remote control solution. So now it really can/does replace everything a console does well (even if they aren't planning on releasing some sort of set-top console)
Its an information preview 3.6 cec options basically killing the Bluetooth and cable connection of Ps5 dualsense edge controller. To fix the issue I needed to disable the cec and revert back to stable version.
yes. probably the biggest missing feature for console usage imo. that and their dock working on all TVs without problems. I unfortunately had to resort to a third party dock, which is working way better than the official one. hopefully that gets fixed eventually!
I mean the kneejerk response when thinking about a Steam Console would be for going for an even beefier machine than the Steam Deck, but what about an ultra affordable console that is just the Steam Deck without nintendo switch style control inputs. The Steam Deck is already affordable, I imagine they could make this extremely affordable to the point that people with a current gen console might still buy one as it allowed them to play lots of party games and indie games they otherwise wouldn't have access too.
It could also use newer, more efficient iterations of the Deck's hardware without the power and thermal resistants that come with the handheld form factor.
I might be the only one, but I kinda want steam machine back. SteamOS with shader caching is probably one of the best way to enjoy gaming without hassle. I'm also waiting for auto-HDR.

Watched this while I was out grabbing breakfast. First thing I did when I got home was boot up the deck and get this update! Some great stuff and Valve is making the deck better and better as time marches on. Love the Steam Deck.
updating steam deck now..... Strange.. the update didn't seem to apply it self, as it just hanged on reboot for several minutes with out it doing anything. I had to hold down POWER for 5 seconds to get it to restart. It did recover and rebooted fine but I'm still on the old build... but i can update it again... and that time it worked.. yay!
Lol no way you showed some gameplay of Geometry Wars! I thought I was the only one who still plays this game. One of the first I installed on my Steam Deck.
I hope this fixes a major bug where any custom controller profiles that we take our time to put build just suddenly gets deleted out of nowhere. I thought it was just me, but I have a friend who had this happen too. We both gave up and I just play keyboard/mouse games a the desk, or just stick with default settings.
Do you think they fixed compatibility with Sony TVs? The Bravia is in particular. If you are not familiar with it, these TVs have intermittent problems communicating with the official steam deck dock. Where even with excellent HDMI cables, you'll often get the old school white snow static on the screen and you have to unplug the power or dock and redock or some combination to get it to display on the TV
Was a bit worried that we would get Plasma 6. I like Plasma 6, but they cut _a lot_ of features I pretty much depended on, especially on Steam Deck (mouse gestures, actual desktop grid, window shading, etc.)
This is all cool and good. Unfortunately this patch broke the onscreen keyboard for me again in desktop mode. Had to revert back to stable to fix that.
I've been looking for a way to get CEC on my Deck from the beginning, and using hacky Home Assistant automations as a workaround for a while now. As someone with a home theater AVR system in my living room, I can't overstate how much of a quality of life improvement I get from the automatic TV Power and Input switching on all my devices. Valves implementation is still a little wonky and missing a few features, but it's already a huge improvement to my docked experience.
I love valve so much for using linux. They couldn't went complete custom route, used BSD and developed their own software by themselves and contributed nothing. Instead they helped the whole linux community with proton, gamescope and other commits to upstream :D
I don't see a point in valve releasing a another console. You can already dock the SD. But I would love for an steam OS that can be used in a dekstop or laptop, it would be awesome.
Can't speak for Xbox but PlayStation has supported all the HDMI CEC goodies going back to at least the PS3. It's always been nice for controlling streaming apps on PlayStation with my TV Remote. Also the whole auto power/sleep with TV on/off.
@@gardiner_bryant what hardware do you run DaVinci Resolve on? I couldn't get it to work properly on Ubuntu 22.04 with a Ryzen 4800u / 16gbs ram even though Premiere pro worked great on this when this was still a Win10 laptop. Seems like DaVinci needs a dedicated GPU to work with it.
Is there any reason they didn't just use btrfs-receive together with subvolumes instead? Just apply an update on a clone and if it succeeds, bump the subvolume ID the next restart will boot into. Seems pretty simple imo, so likely I'm overlooking something
@@theaveragecactus Hmm I remember an earlier article from Collabora mentioning that it does. Though looking through some now I can only find someone in the comments saying it uses btrfs for / and ext4 for everything else.
Noob question: Why do we need Valve to ship a kernel update? Can't users just update the kernel themselves like with other distros? Does SteamOS somehow lock the update down or is it a compatibility thing?
I just wish I could find another decent hard plastic snap on case cover for mine. The UYIYE cases i usually buy from Amazon are now limited to one color. Id thought about the killswitch case. He hate that the designs are just skins
I can confirm that TV remote input does work with PS5. But I'm not sure if it's HDMI-CEC or because my TV is also sony brand and some proprietary stuff.
currently playing through brutal doom v22 and project brutality using the Gzdeck Launcher its awesome on the steam deck battery lasts for like 6 hours as well
GArhhhh. Update made all my non steam games disappear only in desktop mode. So i can't edit them. Was planning on doing some banner and image/logo editing this week. This update seems to have prevented that.
Is Steam Os viable for running on pc? Or should another linux be used? Total noob here wanna switch from windows before 10 ends support. I game on steam and epic
Only thing I really want is an official StramOS port to PC so I can build my HTPC. They'll probably save it for the comeback of the SteamMachine though!
CEC support will depend on a few things... not all tvs should have this feature, i tried on mine and it dont, wich is strange i think samsung rather impose they own proprietary standard than follow cec? anywya i dont have a deck to test this, but i would love to turn on my tv from my notebook, turn off among other things. remote passtrhough to the deck? never thought of that, but now i know this i gotta develop for it!
Omg pleasssssseeeee tell me this fixes the issue with AirPods Pro 2. Mine will work for like 5 minutes, and then the audio becomes all stuttery and it's super annoying
Anyone having issues with bluetooth controllers ps5 and 8bitdo where they pair initially, but I always need to turn them off and back on again for them to actually work? Somewhere around 3.50ish is when I started to have the problems.
8bitdo Pro 2 here. Have you upgraded the firmware? I think I had an issue like that last year, as well as, random disconnections in-game. But it went away after the upgrade.
Really wish they would just sell or release their OS for desktops even if it was AMD machines only... Also might be about time they do add video streaming services....
Valve making gaming OS indeed. Hopefully microsoft didnt cook something similar with "XBOX OS". If that happen, it would be full of ads anyway. (they just shovel ads and other ai bullshit in win 11) xd and someone already did windows for gaming, but I didn't tried that stripdown OS yet.
Hard to say how much CEC foreshadows a console - CEC support is great for a dockable device. With my Switch, if I have it turned on when I dock it, my TV automatically wakes up and goes to the correct input. It's a great quality of life measure. It should be noted that various CEC features may vary between TV manufacturers.
I tried the Preview channel's Remote Controlled update and it was decent but I couldn't find the option to disable the unified Framerate/Refresh Rate slider which was needed since I run my Deck at 70hz. Does anyone know if the option so disable the unified framerate slider is back now?
Still waiting for steam os come to desktop PCs. Before windows 10 is fully retired. Cus we all know that date is slowly getting closer. And hopefully will support GTX/RTX GPUs. But suspect that prob never happen Cus how anti comsumers Nvidia is and they don’t like Linux.
The Nvidia situation should be quickly improving now btw! Mesa 24.1 includes NVK - a full Vulkan driver for modern Nvidia cards. It was written independently, is fully FOSS and it's going to "just work" on Turing+ cards.
Oh, and unless you're _only_ gonna game or browse the web, you should pick a bit more 'general purpose' OS. Also, Bazzite already seems to be a better version of SteamOS, so your should probably check that out.
@@mskiptr Thanks for the info. But yeah I’m still on pascal. GTX 1080ti. Haven’t bothered upgrade Cus prices here Canada are still insane for new or used. Looked at 3090 and here they going for more then new 4080, 3090 here is anywhere $2200 Canadian to $2500 + LOL WTF? 4080 here is $1800+ Canadian last I checked. Look at 6900xt. They still going $1000 or more. 6950xt about same $1000 to $1200 or more. Yeah still running duel boot Win10/older win 7 haven’t bother remove yet. Left win7 for now Cus waiting see what happens with steam os. So haven’t formatted win7 form yet. But mostly playing older pc game. Mostly like ATS/ETS, or starcraft 2. Not playing anything new. Got ps5 for anything new. Yes I hear that there is a few disro that close to steam os (game mode) feel. Last time tried ubuntu (was around 2019/20). Couldn’t get my onboard audio from x470 motherboard to work. Also tried haloISO, that was buggy as heck. Half time couldn’t even boot desktop mode. Cus bad GTX drivers. Pop up menu to reboot/shutdown/boot desktop didn’t work Cus buggy gtx/RTX drivers. I know if had AMD gpu would prob be fine most Linux distro. But good hear Linux drivers for Nvidia is getting bit better. Hear Linux Mint is also good choice. But haven’t tired. Just been waiting see what happens with stems os but thanks for info. May check it out someday.
@@SireDragonChester Yeah, Pascal and Maxwell are sadly in the worst spot. Too new for unsigned firmware and the earlier hacks, yet too old for GSP. It's stuck with the proprietary drivers for the time being. Hopefully the 550 beta release lives up to the promises and fixes its Wayland issues. I really hope the GPU prices become less insane. Especially with Intel entering the market. You can also try looking for very old cards like Kepler. It's the last generation with pretty decent FOSS OpenGL support and will hopefully also be supported by NVK at some point. [1/2]
@@SireDragonChester As for distros, Mint and Pop_OS are a really decent first choice. If you're relatively tech savvy, you can also look into things like Fedora KDE, OpenSUSE or Debian. Personally I would avoid Ubuntu, though it's not _that_ big of a deal anyway. I also really like Arch, Alpine and Guix. They are very interesting (and quite nice), but I frankly cannot recommend them as a starting point (unless you're a very specific kind of person). [2/2]
