Steelers' Omar Khan's Overhaul Plan | Why Russell Wilson/Justin Fields Might Not Be the Future at QB

The Pittsburgh Steelers need to play the long game to rebuild the roster, all while staying competitive. But Chris Carter thinks Omar Khan has a chess game up his sleeve to do just that. Khan is overhauling the roster, and that does involve a lot of turnover from Kevin Colbert's later draft picks. But there's a specific reason Chris sees as to why it's part of a long term plan.
That long term plan also includes the quarterback position, and somewhat Russell Wilson and/or Justin Fields. But Chris see's Khan's biggest plan as an ultimate contingency for what could develop for the Steelers in future NFL Drafts where they can find their next franchise quarterback if neither Wilson nor Fields work out.

Man, that is a lot of conjecture. Lol. I don’t think I’ve heard so much during an off-season. I think people wildly overestimate R Wilson’s expected performance and undervalue his ability. He’s not gonna be tasked to be his 2014 version, because quite frankly, on this team, it won’t be needed. I’m sure we’ll all see flashes, but the dude is gonna be playing behind a monster line with monster RBs with talented weapons at WR. If Wilson goes out there and makes 2-3 more key throws than last season, we not only win that first playoff game in 7 seasons, we might even be in contention to win the division and perhaps more. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Last time we played KC in the playoffs, Watt was really disruptive until Reid and PM made a simple adjustment that rendered him useless. All they did was have PM step into the pocket when TJ went outside and went to his right when TJ rushed on the inside. No counter adjustments by the Steelers-the other problem in that game was the anemic offense but 42 points and nearly 500 yards of offense is still a problem.

FYI, all teams plan years in advance on who they could potentially draft, depending on the team's trajectory and the potential of their roster to compete for a championship. If you don't have a top quarterback, you have no shot at a Super Bowl. It's a complicated process that involves hundreds of evolving factors. Talent is identified early and monitored. Big draft boards are continuously changing throughout the year. Not just for quarterbacks but all positions. Do you think teams only start thinking about the draft at the end of each season? Controlling the flow of the game means not putting the ball on the ground. But let’s say you’re right, what’s the price for a guy to do nothing outrageous? I say this because any QB making market value 2nd contract money must elevate the offense to make up for the roster shortcomings due to the salary cap. To me, a second contract and a “just control the flow of the game” are usually contradictory things.
@jeffhewitt2819

@mike2687 not in San Francisco and people say they have one of the best coaches in the game. I have the unpopular opinion that QB's are over rated. Of the offensive priorities, it's OL, skill players excluding qb, scheme or system, and then QB's. You build your team with this formula and you can win with a seventh round qb that you're swapping out every four years. Let someone else pay the 40+ million.
@mike2687
@mike2687 11 дней назад
@@jeffhewitt2819 - - there’s a reason why your opinion is unpopular being that Purdy was top 5 in yards and 2nd in completion percentage. That’s more than just controlling the flow. To your point-yes, having a cheap QB allows for great cap flexibility to build an excellent roster. Counter to your point about just plugging in a 7th rounder to do so would be how SF replaced a cheap 1st round QB with a cheap 7th round QB. They clearly had a more talented QB with Purdy than Lance. To your point, the structure (coaching, scheme and surrounding talent) makes a huge difference. Counter to your point, KC trades away Hill and wins back to back SBs even though Hill has been 1st or 2nd in receiving both seasons… clearly, we can’t put the best WR above the best QB. Wouldn’t even be close for RBs even though SF has one-because that RB is even more reliant on everything you mentioned for QB. I will say this to show where our philosophies overlap-if I were roster building for the offense from scratch, I like the list of priorities because I can afford to trade up for a rookie QB or plug in a vet. If they don’t work out, I move on from them and repeat the process the following year. But there’s no delusion that any late pick is going to just “work”. If I’m building a roster that is incomplete and I take a pass on PM, Burrow, Stroud or some other high level QB in favor of a stud OL, I’ve messed up.

I don’t think that Wilson or Fields will get an offer until after the 2024 season. They will wait to see how Wilson performs to decide what to offer. And they will look at the potential of Fields, but lack of him proving himself. If they don’t get to see how Fields performs, they will try to entice him with an offer with a chance to prove himself. But it really depends on how Wilson performs that will determine how much they offer him.

The QB of the future may, or man notbe on the team. You've run through some good options. An option that is probably a long shot is Russell Wilson doing a great job, loving playing in Pittsburgh, and work-out a very team friendly contract for the bulk of his career. After all, if you're Wilson heading-up a playoff calibre team with the fan base behind you and you're making 39 mil a year already, why not ride it out?

They kind of stumbled into being able to draft Ben 11th in 2004 after Maddox turned back into a pumpkin. 6 QBs were taken in 2024 and it took getting to 12th in the draft to get one. They aren’t going to tank for a high draft pick and even for Chicago to move from 20 to 11 to get Fields cost two first rounders. And it cost a first round pick to trade up for Devin Bush. Look back at the season and tell me how many more wins they get with Russ over KP-Russ wasn’t winning against SF or the Texans… Jags could’ve been a toss up but guaranteed win. I do think they would’ve beaten the Browns. We also have to consider the wins we’re all one score games with a handful being come from behind wins. Lastly, their record last year was against 7 backup QBs and they probably lose in that first Browns game without the injury to NC. Point being, I think Russ is a better option than KP but it doesn’t always translate to being much better record with all things considered. I fully expect them to be much better this year than last but wouldn’t be surprised at all if this year’s record is worse based on playing Burrow twice, potentially fewer teams with backup QBs, a tougher back half of the season with an aging Cam and Larry O on the DL and QBs that put the ball on the ground.

I agree but the plan is still solid-build the best roster possible and then drop a QB in the middle of it. IMO, this is what they should’ve been doing with Najee and KP drafts-building the roster from the trenches outward (along with BPA) and then trading up in last year’s draft for a QB for a 4-5 year SB window or acquiring a vet for a shorter window. The last two drafts follow this model and the move could come in 2025… I don’t put much stock into the quality of the draft class before the start of the college season as there’s always risers and fallers. But you’re right, there will be another set of issues to deal with by then-always will be. I think building the best roster possible leading into that mitigates such issues more than anything else could and that’s best accomplished staying cheap at QB. Technically, the 2026 draft/offseason will coincide with GP’s 2nd contract and Watt will be a FA. 2027 will be Minkah’s FA year along with Queen’s and the rookie deals for Jones (assuming he’s on the 5th year), JPJ and Benton. Of course, they’d also have 2025/2026 draft picks to add to the team. A lot will happen between now and then so yes, seeing out that far requires a lot of guesswork!

Well this next draft is their best shot to get a QB early….because we are going to draft top 10-15 position after this coming season.

Nope. If Russ kills it he’s the dude. Steelers insiders have already said that Tomlin and Smith have said that they want to sign Russ long-term. All they need is to see that he’s still got it. I think they’ll break precedent and sign him during the season. They won’t let him get to feee agency, just like they didn’t let him get to free agency five months ago.

IMO, its the third option. Mediocre Mike will lead them to a 7-10 season and the future qb will be a draft pick.

Russ is capable of being that. Everybody will say I’m smoking the dust until December. Just three years ago (spring of 2021), there was healthy debate over the best QB, and there were three candidates: Rodgers, Mahomes, and Russ, and more than a few people argued for Russ. All we have seen since are some injuries to Russ (two years in a row), horrible coaching, horrible drafting, inferior offensive rosters, and one coach trying to tank (Payton in 2023-24). People need to quit writing off Russ and put things into context. Russ wasn’t the problem in Denver, and he wasn’t the problem in Seattle, either. The LoB, specifically Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor are B!tches for talking about their QB to media. What happens in the locker room should STAY in the locker room. I don’t respect the LoB for taking their bullsh*t to the media, and I don’t respect anyone who speaks of them in a positive light outside of football. They’re losers to me!

You have a FRANCHISE QB, and his name is Russell Carrington Wilson.

@@DeCurtaRican tell Chris that. Scroll these comments and see the rest of my thoughts. I’m capable of reading in between the lines of someone’s message. Are you? Chris is in their faces and in small rooms with them. He can’t come out and say what he’s actually thinking. So for him to explore “franchise qb” conversations and speaking of the next decade like even the kid we just traded for won’t make it, says a ton. Russell was in the Super Bowl 10years ago & Fighting to get there before that. He also came out as a super senior transferring through the portal to secondary schools… making him how old now? He has a shelf life. “Franchise” and all, let’s see how long his talent & body holds up. I definitely see us winning with him here,,, how long though? So calm down screaming that “franchise” stuff dude.
