Hey everyone! Sorry for the long gap in between videos, I have been fishing, just not filming a whole bunch! Steelhead fishing is something that has become extremely special to me over the past several years, and fly fishing has always been one of the biggest facets of my life. Recently, the two have merged, and it has led me towards learning new skills I never would have thought of with a single handed rod! Though my casting is pretty rough to watch at times, it has been getting the job done, and I am always striving to make a better cast! Thank you everyone for watching and I hope you enjoyed!!

I have not read all the comments, so this may have been mentioned, but when you are swinging flies you should never set the hook. Just let them eat, and let them turn. If you do anything, you wait for them to take line off the reel, and then you can gently sweep to the bank. It's a hard process to trust and takes a long time to learn (if ever) but they will hook themselves. If they don't take line off the reel, there really isn't anything you can do. Great video by the way!

Great to see you not give up and finally get that solid hook up on your first steelhead on the swing!! Wondered what brought you to that run since to me it seemed so flat and open? I'm not familiar at all with your fishery that far upriver and on such large systems. I'm a Western WA guy and Olympic Peninsula coastal fisherman with smaller higher gradient streams. Your determination and ability to analyze the situations is going to help your future adventures as you get more into steelhead on the spey rod. I still consider myself somewhat new even at 6 years in steelhead spey fishing, since making the change from more conventional methods my first fly caught steelhead was my largest fish ever in all my years of steelhead fishing and all by myself! Later that same morning I caught my second as well! It was a moment that hooked me for life as far as spey fishing method and learning a new approach to catch these beautiful creatures sparked a new interest in how I approach these creatures. Best of luck in the coming season, obviously i didn't see this until January so I'm sure you'll be tying flies and dreaming of warmer temps! Cheers, Chuck

Thanks, I appreciate the comment and I apologize for the late response! This is probably the widest section of the river, and honestly, I noticed faster water below this section and I figured that the steelhead may rest in this open area. But actually now, looking back at it, I believe the steelhead were displaced by the high number of chinook present in the system (You could see the salmon rolling towards the middle of the section). I am jealous of your water! I just got out to the coast and landed my first winter steelhead and your country out there is absolutely amazing. Best of luck out there fishing this season!

Hey bro awesome video a few tips when it comes to spey. First try not to set the hook let the fish hook its self and take some line. This will be extremely hard to do at first but once you get it down you won't loose as many. Second when spey casting your forward cast I notice you drop your rod tip pretty low. When you go to send your line stop your rod tip higher and will allow for a more powerful cast. Just a few things to work on but your doing an awesome job and out there at the right times. Keep up the good work and keep practicing. Congrats on a gorgeous fish!

Hey thanks I appreciate it! Yeah, it's definitely been a learning curve and a few of my cast are definitely forced, but I'm trying to pick at it each time I head out, so I appreciate the insight! And I definitely agree with the hook sets, I completely whiffed on the second fish and I probably could have hooked into the fish better if I waited :/

And use mustard 2 X hocks for tying streamers. Won’t bend out ever. Great steelhead jig hooks and fly hocks. Sharp. Also' tie a lot of minnow patterns in hot pink, WHITE , purple and pink and white. Tie them 3 to 5 inches long , don’t be afraid to use big flies when swinging.. in dead winter downsize.

Great videos! It's awesome to see you experiencing and vocalizing all the emotions that steelheaders share. Keep up the videos and keep up the swing. Dry line steelhead will change the trajectory of your life. I'd suggest putting together a couple of dedicated chase patterns for those nippy fish, that you can change to with confidence. Small muddlers in black and orange caddis are my favorites for summer/fall.

I rarely start short. I have no confident in short cast. I approach far up stream with long bombing cast. It’s a habit I’ve have. I watch to many people drop in on top of the fish. So is that why we petitioned to close our rivers here in Oregon? So that upstream anglers could keep fishing during this year of epically poor returns? Have you even seen the counts over the dams? My crew kept off the Columbia tribs even before our request to the regulators to close the rivers went into effect. Quite disappointing that our efforts to save native fish down here were not reciprocated by those upstream. Disregard if this is *not* a Columbia River tributary being fished in 2021.
@FlyAddict_Fishing
@FlyAddict_Fishing 2 года назад
Look... I am all for shutting down and not fishing fisheries that have abysmal runs of native steelhead. That is why I have not fished the Grande Ronde or Salmon River and it's tributaries this year because there are very few native fish returning and I do not want to add any stress. The river I am fishing has had a very healthy return of WILD fish, the hatchery fish are the numbers that are lacking (but still they are the healthiest return out of any river here in the west for summer run fish). I monitor the returns over LGD every day and I try to take in to account basic ethics and reports from my local fisheries agency when I am fishing on rivers that I cherish deeply. Rivers like the Deschutes were lacking sorely and were shut down accordingly. The river I am fishing even got approved for a spring fishing season because the return of wild and hatchery fish was healthy enough to sustain the fishery. Coupled with the fact that I am fishing barbless, without bait, and releasing every fish I catch properly (imo), I have the upmost faith that I am being respectful and responsible for our resource.
@EestiOke
@EestiOke 2 года назад
@@FlyAddict_Fishing Several people I know who are not just fly fishermen but actual professional fish biologists, conservationists are in heated agreement with me. And in quite disbelief that the runs in ID are not closed. You can justify based on barbless, C&R fly swinging tactics (as we could, incidentally), but ultimately some of us are in it for the long term health of the runs, and some of us are in it for the short-term opportunism of Clearwater/SR fish that didn't face any downstream pressure. Anyway, we'll focus on keeping our runs healthy. Cheers.
@FlyAddict_Fishing
@FlyAddict_Fishing 2 года назад
@@EestiOkeFirst off, In no way shape or form do I respect anything your state has done for preservation and conservation of our precious wild anadromous fish in recent years. Your state often creates the problems that IDFG has to deal with in the first place. You preach about protecting wild fish but you are backing a group who allowed for the continued harvest of wild fish. And yes, I'm sure ODFW knows what to do with Idaho's runs so incredibly well... Obviously better than IDFG by your logic! I am not justifying the fishing by the use of barless flies and proper handling, I am justifying the fishing by a VERY GOOD return of wild fish. Something the Deschutes, Umatilla, and John Day all did not have because of piss poor management.
@EestiOke
@EestiOke 2 года назад
Honestly, it's a bit odd that you're suggesting that I stand behind an organization that I haven't claimed to support. Do you know how many signatures and how much effort it took to push the state to take necessary measures to support the depleted runs and remediate the hot water temps? Probably not; instead you're making baseless statements when what I'm referring to is specific to a single issue, not broadly about any organization's track record. But guess what - when the water temps went up, and fish returns were starting to look meager, we didn't need the state to tell us to hang up the rods for the season. So, uh, yeah, don't make baseless claims about who or what I support when I haven't said as much. Thanks; I've made my point, I'm out.
@FlyAddict_Fishing
@FlyAddict_Fishing 2 года назад
@@EestiOke So you were talking to the biologists in Idaho on their beliefs on the matter? Because, honestly I find it much more likely with you being from Oregon you talked to local biologists. Does that sound far fetched? Any body else you may have talked to would have very little indepth knowledge on this system and would make little sense for you to consult, and anybody from Idaho would have told you this river has a healthy run of wild fish compared to literally everywhere else. I appreciate your work for the fish you have helped in your state, but to come on here and criticize fishing on a particular river you obviously know very little about is ridiculous. That's the point I'm trying to get across. You obviously haven't done any research on this system, and only know the impacts on your local rivers.
