This was a fun trip we took with a new young guide Ethan Bush. The American River can be very difficult but also very rewarding, sit back & enjoy!

Those people commenting need to look around... we have way more issues on the American that need to be addressed. Not gunna lie though... I kinda hope they close Sailor Bar soon. Give the fish that area to spawn and get rid of the snaggers.

I so agree with you, Kris. That spot needs to be shut down long ago-too much pressure, especially during the salmon season. The fish do not even get a chance to start spawning with so much pressure.

Thank you for an informative and educative video, sir! I hope that people realize that the American river Steelhead AND Salmon fishery is in big trouble. I ALSO HOPE THAT THEY SHUT DOWN SAILOR BAR! Yes, it's a good and productive spot, but in 2019 that whole area was reconstructed FOR A REASON -- to create spawning habitat for those fish.

I’ve been fishing the American for 8 years now it’s a great fishery also most the fish that spawn naturally there offspring don’t really ever make it back out to the ocean. The hatchery is what’s really keeping the river alive
@westerngroovetv
@westerngroovetv 3 года назад
Why don't they?
@vanshatoutdoors7384
@vanshatoutdoors7384 3 года назад
Because the predators in the river and most the nests get tore up by fishermen and sucker fish
@KyleSilva1990
@KyleSilva1990 3 года назад
@@vanshatoutdoors7384 so close that whole section of river, then fisherman won’t fuck up the reds. Every fish in every river has to dodge predators, even though predators are a lot more abundant now days, the salmon and steelhead are smart and resilient fish, They do survive, So like said let’s eliminate the people out of the equation and the survival rate for those spawning fish will be better. Closing sailor bar will also make the pressure on that river subside by a lot, 80% of people fishing the American don’t no how to catch a steelhead or salmon without snagging it, and if they actually have to hunt the fish and learn the patterns of these fish most the pressure will give up and move onto fishing the Thermalito outlet. Which I also believe should be closed. Like said us fisherman who love these fish need to act now, stand up for what is ethical and object to when something is Heinous. You see someone snagging salmon intentionally, fucking say something. Maybe I’m different, because I don’t fear back lash of confronting someone because I’m confident that if they wanna get hostile and take it to that level, they’re gonna have a soar jaw and most likely gonna come back to consciousness wet and confused. Not saying I’m some bad ass, but we literally have to start fighting for these fish, being the few we have left. Sorry to go off on your post man. Once I get going on this shit. It’s hard to stop. I want my kids to enjoy these amazing fish, and this lifestyle that comes with them. I’m just afraid they’re never gonna be able to experience it.

I never seem to be able to catch those big eel river fish but I do catch some of the coleman hatchery and even some wild fish on nightcrawlers and blood dot beads under a float(I think those fish behave alot more like a resident trout than their bigger kin) not sure if the wild ones are native strain, more than likely not but I do know that unlike salmon,all unclipped steelhead were born naturally in the river. This is info I got from speaking with an employee at the nimbus hatchery.

I 100% agree with not taking fish from the spawning beds. However, if people are catch and releasing, I'm cool with it. The fishery will not depend upon this. What it will depend upon is the management of the water and the amount that is sent out during the summer when the young salmon are in the water. You can watch the flows increase almost 3x what they are now during the summer months when there are no fish spawning. What is the reason for that??????? The water is used to flush the delta out of sewage and treated water. 2021 and we still have cities dumping sewage into the water ways that support salmon and steelhead. That is where the fight needs to take place. Stop the high water flows in the summer and save it for the fall when the fish are running.
@InformativeFisherman

Thanks for sharing, I wasn’t aware of that!
@bssaassin1900
@bssaassin1900 Год назад
You have good point about releasing too much water at once however the baby salmon and steelhead stay in the river for over a year and the in river juveniles need the flows as well both for colder temps and so they're not restricted to the main channel. The little fry and smolts will hide in the willows,overhanging trees and bank structure. Too low of water and they don't stand a chance against the stripers and those damn cormorants

@bssaassin1900
@bssaassin1900 Год назад
Yes! All anadromous rivers in california require a steelhead report card (in some coastal rivers even salmon require a report card) the american river's code is 18. No wild/unclipped steelhead can be retained but you're allowed 2 hatchery fish.

Most of these fish spawn in visible shallows and die off during the process and not come back to spawn the following year. As bass do every year and less than 20% are typically visible to the angler. Minimal damage vs lots of damage.

@@terrybolton5860 well for starters,bass are very well populated and invasive( i mean shit you can catch them in a ditch or canal or even a golfcourse. Whereas steelhead are in a plight so any natural reproduction should be encouraged and not disturbed. 2nd,although not automatically programmed to die like salmon, many of them do because it's alot of strain and they eat little. If you actually spend time out on the river in January and February you will see zombied out and dying steelhead.

Let's be clear. Steelhead love tailouts for multiple reasons beyond just good spawning water. With that being said, the American River is beat to sh!@%, so concern over walking on reds seems insignificant considering that there are two major damns that block the way to the real spawning areas. I don't fish that river even though I live minutes away. So those who do can correct me, but I would guess that the wild population is facing a battle that they are unlikely to win. Do people catch wild fish? Or are they hatchery misclips? Also, you take your life into your hands fishing by Nimbus. So walking on redds seems insignificant to me. But yes, stay off Redds if you can. And keep fishing the American, lol. Respect all fish and all bodies of water.
