Steep driveways vs little cars! Snow storm causes multiple recoveries

An icy snowstorm caused quite a few stuck vehicles. Due to the low weight rating of a bridge on the second one, I took my old grey Dodge as it’s the lightest truck I have and the only one under the rating. The first job was a very simple winch of a car up a steep and slippery driveway, but unfortunately the second car suffered some damage when it slid off the side of the driveway and into a tree. On that one I decided to do a side pull to move the car off of the tree without causing any more damage, and luckily the car was still drivable afterwards.

Tip for future rescues, Almost all European cars have a towing hook that you can screw into the front. You'll find it under the floor in the trunk and usually it attaches to a hole behind a little plastic cover in the front bumper, 90% of the time its below the passenger side headlight. Poke the plastic cover out and bam, perfect place to attach your winch without crawling around under the car ;) There's also a place for them in the rear, usually below the passenger tail light. BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen/Audi/Skoda, and Volvo all have them in a very similar location. Good luck, and hope it helps! Edit: Turns out its called a ”Tow Eye”, not tow hook :) Also thought i should add that most of them are reverse threaded so you dont go mad wondering why the thread wont bite haha
@ptso7580
@ptso7580 Год назад
It's not recommended to pull sideways like in the video. It is only ment to pull a vehicle forward on to a roll back.
@immDroidz

There is a reason why left hand threads are use screwing the towing eye. The way a synthetic rope is weave and the the pull release of the rope, unlikely, but is known to happen can unscrew the eye if it's screwed in with right hand threads. Also you never tighten or crank the towing eye all the way in, you will never unscrew it by hand.

Watching you do these winter service calls sure brings back old memories from the years I worked for my dad. Worked in the garage and did service calls with the pickup and the wrecker. The big storm of 1978 was the worst year for snow in my area. Cursed the wrecker calls one after the other every day for over a week straight after the snow dump but today I wish I could go back and do it all over again. Good memories. Thanks. And BTW, I always watch to the end. Just afraid I'll miss something. LOL

Well I know who I’d call in Oregon! What a careful tow operator. I had the pleasure of doing business with a local down-to-earth guy like Casey who got me out of a snowy ditch on Utah 12. He hooked up my rented Mercury AWD (yes I’m old), told me to roll down the back window, put just the right tension on the line, told me to gun it in reverse, and it popped out of that ditch like toast out of a toaster; just like he said it would. I made sure he had a tip big enough to take his wife and kids out for a good Utah steak dinner. These small rural operators are the best, just like you are Casey.
