Other than keeping your board flatter to the snow, by means of bending your knees (especially when on the heelside), you may also want to ride the steepest parts only on the toeside edge as you'll likely have less 'boot-out' and even if you do slightly lose your edge, it's easier to re-engage it into the snow and get back to riding the edge rather than your boots or bindings.

Have a quick evaluation of the situation but don't look down the steep hill or ice or moguls, it will intimidate you then you lose your balance. pick your next turning spot one at a time. It becomes an easy green, like you are doing a lot of small green runs. When you are down at the bottom, then look up the hill and say, wow.

Knees bent and balance on that edge. You don't want to lean to much trying to stop yourself or too little and gain too much speed. Just keep turning and balancing on that edge.

This is a great video. I feel like I'm basically side slipping down these here on the east coast. Just hopping toe to heel all the way down, don't feel like I'm ever really riding them, even with OK conditions. Do you have any videos you can point to of you cruising some steeps in good conditions (not fresh pow, but good hard pack)? I'm still trying to figure out the best way to navigate when the conditions are good. Also, a Mogul video would be much appreciated!

+Luca Sumberac Thanks. Search my name with 'horseshoe bowl fun' and a vid of similar conditions but with a nice grippy snow will show up. Happy shreddin!

That is gnarly. As an ass loafer, I want to say those guys should have put their edge back in the snow after booting out on their bottom.
@mikeoclimberMTB
@mikeoclimberMTB 6 лет назад
IMHO, sideslips over rocks are way more likely to blow out an edge, best to hit them straight on like a box if you can't avoid them, or hop over them while side slipping so your edge doesn't hit them.

@Jake McCoy is right but I am going to add this Yeap, I love my board, but not as much as my life... torn edge and being alive? I choose the latter...

Hey bro Loving your work, you mentioned riding a wider board, I'm 179cm 71kgs and riding a 155 by 294 Santa cruz pure ride. would you say 300 is too wide for my specs? Cheers mate. You're a real pleasure to watch

+Paolo Milana :). Agree! Avoid it if you know it's bad. I rode it the previous day and it was decent. Took one this day... And although it looks ok.... It was shit! So I took one more to make a video of it. 😂🤪😂

you should not seet even if you have a wide board, your as unwights your edge, if you need to stop and rest, then stand in a tripod position with an arm behind your back.

If you're hitting a lot of icy spots early in the season, would you recommend another board tune up? I'm very curious about when to get your board sharpened. I'm thinking you'd need it more frequently after hitting up icy runs. Please let me know! Cheers.
@RyanKnapton
@RyanKnapton 6 лет назад
+DigitalDreams for sure, when riding icy conditions or even dirty snow (pre-season) it does all these little abrasions to your base and edges, and a base grind and edge tune are needed way sooner than if riding good snow.
@leraginasian

guess I'll go first. question. what do you recommend for intermediate riders and stamina? I can go for a while, on any type of run, but after a bit my leg muscles need a (good) break. maybe that is normal? maybe I'm straining in my carves too much idk. also, what jackets do you use? I love the way they look, all one-color like. peace from the portland oregon area!
@RyanKnapton

Prior to the season I do tons and tons of squats. So maybe download one of the free 'squats' apps and get use to using that once a day if that sounds like something you'd want to do. Otherwise, right before snowboarding I always do some squats, calf raises, and some slight yogo / stretching. If I don't warm up my legs and body a bit with that before riding, I definitely feel it in a negative way. So maybe try that. And yeah, if while riding you start feeling fatigued, 1. Just pull off to the side of the run and catch your breath or let the legs relax a bit, or if its real bad, just hop in the chalet, maybe kick off your boots and do a bit of stretching. For jackets, I mostly try getting anything with colors that will show up decent of video. Then for brands, I've got some good stuff by 686, Volcom, Quiksilver, Burton, (and this one is DC). Check-out www.the-house.com... that's where I've gotten most my jackets from.

Ryan Knapton awesome thanks for replying man! I will be applying your tips. I also plan on trying buttering for the first time soon. I'm a bit nervous because every time I see your videos doing it, I always feel like if i tried it I would catch an edge. I'll take baby steps and see how it feels as low speeds. I'll check out that site too, thanks.

You're talking about rocks in Horseshoe Bowl. I can't tell if you're wearing your helmet or not in this video. Are there more dynamic riding conditions where you're always sure to wear one?
