I always look forward to your videos. I'm usually in the same boat as you but with twice the cussing and more than likely twice the time. Fine job with the instructions and camera work. Thank you.
Wonderful and entertaining video. It has convinced me to spend the money and get a re-manufactured unit, because I would more than likely lose parts. Thank you.
@@stevefye915 Just need to be patient, and never use force (hammer) to put things together! Teflon seals, microwave?😱 LOL,screwdrivers, sharp picks are a no no when doing hydraulics One little score on any surfaces with seals and its as good as finished, internal leak? Love the cleaning part of all meatals sealing areas or particulars 🤣🤣 CAN'T see that box lasting years
Great video. I will say that a 1-1/16" socket is the perfect size to land on the outer part of the bearing when driving in the input shaft seal. Also, using a small punch to push each individual ball into the worm gear makes quick work of getting the BB's back into place.
Excelente mi viejo. no entiendo el Ingles, pero viendo el paso a paso de tu video tranquilamente se puede realizar el mantenimiento correctivo de la caja de dirección de Toyota. gracias parcero por multiplicar su conocimiento. 👊👍
Just about to do this, great video thanks. I've already had to cut one of the chassis mount bolt heads off, so I'm already welding one step before you !
Great video Bud. I really enjoyed watching it ... and your comments throughout, made it SO much less boring than around 85% of the other shit on RU-vid.
Very useful video, this steering box is very similar to the one found on a 91 4x4 Toyota pickup. Be careful with that power plunger nut because I rounded that too.
That “pin wrench” is actually a very common tool here in Australia, we use it primarily to remove and replace discs on angle grinders, I’ve got no idea what we call it here though
the lock nut on the worm gear looks completely different on my 93 4x4. no holes for the pin wrench and only one big lock nut. It looks like a shallow socket, like you could the head of a huge bolt into it. any ideas?
Thanks for this video. My steering gearbox is similar to this, it's a Toyoda and I'm not sure if the repair kit for this and mine are the same. Is there a size ofthe repair kit?
Wait... did you place that oil seal (11:46) spring side in or out? Yours and mine started spring side out by the looks but itlooks like you placed it spring side in...?
Hey, thanks for the vid, very helpful, unfortunately I started pulling it apart before I watched this (diesel mechanic so I thought I knew better lol) I didn't mark the cap/ worm gear valve, do you know if it'll cause any issues if guess where it is it seated correctly haha thanks
I’m following this but I’ve pulled my pitman arm off and now I’m wondering how you know where it’s supposed to go back on? Like how do you figure out which splines on the shaft are the correct orientation for it?
I have play on the shaft with the bearings. The end that connects with the steering shaft. It's fully assembled makes the steering have play. Any idea how to fix?
What if there is no outer ring ? When you started to take the actual worm gear apart to rebuild it, that first ring that you removed with a hammer and screw driver. Mine doesn't have that outer ring. How do I get it apart so I can pull out the worm gear? I bought that harbor freight pin tool and tried to turn it cause mine don't have that ring. But it won't budge. So what is different? I'm working on a gear box for a 91 toyota pickup. It looks exactly like yours.
I had the same problem as you on a spare gearbox I bought. Decided to ignore it and hope that it's not a problem area. I was able to move it by hitting the wrench so I think maybe letting some penetrating oil sit in there for a few day would have loosened it up. Beside that, there doesn't seem to be any other way
Mines leaking, and has a lot of play, causing it to pull to the right, due to the crown on the road. Needs a rebuild, but I've driven it like 20k miles while it's been doing all of that
How much did the customer save by rebuilding vs buying a new one? It also appears the fluid was the now watery original fluid. Lasting 300K Miles is no problem with synthetic fluid, on 3 of my vehicles.
Hey Sam is this the same box/rebuild that I would find on a 93 4runner? I'm going to help a friend reseal the gearbox on his 93 and I'm having trouble finding a video listed as being for this specific truck. Also when you said put fluid on the orings, you mean ATF or PS fluid? Or some other sort of oil grease? And on the large Teflon seal you said microwave for 1 minute, do you microwave the small one for the same length of time? Good video thanks
@@onefortysixam9713 it's not my 4Runner I was just wondering what type of lubricant you recommended for those seals, if you use something specific or special sounds like ATF tho
Rebuilt my box using this great guide after fixing leaking steering column seal, re installed and now seem to have more slop in the steering than before (can turn the wheel almost 2" each way before the pitman arm begins to turn). Adjusting the adjusting nut all the way in doesn't seem to fix it. Any ideas where I might of stuffed up??
More specifically, if that large locking nut in the valve body (that you need the pin spanner for) was 360 degrees looser than it previously was, could this cause the slop? I may have tightened it up a rotation less than what I marked it at....
Hi mate I know this was ages ago, but I’ve just rebuilt mine and have the exact same problem. Did you ever solve this? I am not wanting to take it out again but if you’re right and tightening it another 360 degrees will fix it then I might muster up the courage 😅
Om 8:54 until 9:14 you've released Seal, Snap Ring, Metal Spacer, O Ring and Teflon. But why when you assembly its you assembly the piston first instead of Seal, Snap Ring, Metal Spacer, O Ring and Teflon ?
@@93paxon I’ve got it to slide about 1in onto the shaft but still need about another ~1in. I used a lot of WD40 + PB blaster with various tools (pry bar, large screw driver, large chisel, long block of wood, small hammer, BFH, brass hammer, etc). Basically stopped sliding and not sure what else to try. Got any ideas?
@@Allfather88 honestly bro it was a long time ago I did this and don't remember how did it. I do remember it was a giant pain in the ass but unfortunately thats all i can give ya. I do remember using a pry bar though lol
