Two beautiful alto players, a good ryhthm section, a live gig. This is the essential experience for me. wonderful! Which player has more technique is irrelevant . Playing music is the thing!
Even though the soprano saxophone is the star that begins the session, I cannot help but think of the clarinet - that of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman and the female modernist Anat Cohen. Of course, I also get glimpses of the spirituality of 'Trane and the sound of Lucky Thompson and Joe Temperary (sp.) - soprano saxophone sound that is. Nice alto Duet, n'est-ce pas?
Donna Lee is a show off session in this instance. Not musical to my ear. But it does showcase the band’s incredible ability. Just not in a musical way (in my humble opinion).
