Steinhart Ocean Vintage GMT Review | Best Rolex 1655 "Steve McQueen" Explorer 2 Homage Watch!

I own the Steinhart 39MM GMT with Ceramic bezel (Coke) . I love the watches quality, movement (SW330 elabore) and looks great. It's one of my favorite watches. I also own a Tudor BB 58, Longines Conquest, Tag Heuer Formula 1 and Bullova Marine Star .

Got the above piece 6 months ago, absolutely love it! My grail would be the 1655 as you stated but not a hope in hell at that price. This steinhart ticks all the boxes for me and wear it as my daily beater. At this price I'm not to bothered if it gets knocked about. Out of all the steinhart range this is the model that catches my eye the most. I even installed a Cyclops 💪😀.

I do not understand the hate for homage watches. The existance of a less expensive alternative doesn't diminish the prestige, history, glamour or glory of the original. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then having a watch design transcend a nameplate and become a template, an archetype, of a style is a tremendous compliment. Also, watch guys kvetch endlessly about homage watches but wear homage clothes without batting an eye. Do they only wear oxford cloth button downs from Brooks Brothers? Do they only wear waxed cotton jackets from Barbour? Do they only wear penny loafers from GH Bass? Sure as shit they don't think about these things. Inconsistent, two-faced, contradictory, incongruous, hypocritical watch snobs.

Great review! Gnomon watches sells the 39mm version, and Olko watches sells the 39mm with cyclops, but they sell out in about 20 to 30 minutes as just happened yesterday, I just missed out of 60 watches, so hoping for more and I get one lol

I had a Rolex 1655 back in the day. I now have a 39mm Olko Special Edition of this Steinhart Ocean GMT - and it is BETTER than the old Rolex in so many ways! Three times the water resistance. Solid end links and center links as opposed to stamped, a milled clasp rather than stamped, and a GMT function rather than just a slave 24 hr hand. It's a better watch! And you can't beat Steinhart's prices. Of all the watches I own, it is the one that is on my wrist a solid 90% of the time.

Hey mate. Thanks for the solid review of this piece. I just re watched it because mine is arriving tomorrow. 🎁 The Rolex 1655 is my ғᴀᴠᴏᴜʀɪᴛᴇ ever Rolex & one of my favourite timepieces ғᴜʟʟ sᴛᴏᴘ. I had absolutely ɴᴏ ɪᴅᴇᴀ that Steinhart made this watch, and 15mins after I found out I'd bought one! I'm not exaggerating. Generally speaking, I feel the same as you : if the original watch is out of production and / or rare and prohibitively expensive, it's fair game. I don't necessarily like the way 'homage' is used in the world. I have a San Martin Capt. Willard. It's not an homage - it's a copy. And I'm fine with that. The watch is simply incredible for the $ and holds its own against ᴀʟʟ my entry level Swiss pieces - despite being 1/3 of the price of most of them. So yeah. There's a place for these watches and I would argue that the Steinhart Vintage GMT ᴀᴄᴛᴜᴀʟʟʏ ɪs an homage piece, because of its size, and a few other styling choices. Luckily I have a larger than average wrist, which is also very flat - so if I'm lucky, the case profile will suit me. And I gotta say - I miss the cyclops. Just got last week my 39mm Olko edition (white indexes, cyclop), it's a perfect 1655 homage, I love it. It fits as a glove my 7' wrist and runs about 3 or 4 seconds late per 24 hours.

nice video! I love this watch with 42 mm, but I have a 19,5 cm wrist.

If you hurry, you might still get one of the 100 Boutique-Editions they just put on sale a few days ago. It's a 39mm version of this watch, so it's very close to the Rolex. AFAIK they've produced 50 pieces with Old Radium, 50 pieces with C3 lume. They're only available through the Steinhart boutique in Aachen, Germany. If you google "Steinhart Aachen" you'll find the store's rather plain website with contact info. However: From what I read in forums, these things seem to be selling rather quickly, so I'm not sure there are any left at this point.

Got to be one of the nicest tool watches around £500

I really like these and have no problem with homages when it comes to long discontinued/massively expensive designs. The only improvement would be to make it 39mm. Maybe that will happen at some point in the future.

I sold my GMT Tag and switched to this for my daily.

Wearing mine today, and love it. Agree, 40mm would be nicer, or at least a more curved case. I wish Steinhart would use a nicer clasp, as although the ones they do use are functional, they feel far from premium. For £460 this watch is remarkable. Because the watch it homages is now so old, I don't even see it as a homage

I very nearly bought one of these, but shied off at the last minute. Would still obtain one if a second hand one came up at a good price. I actually like the fact that it's 42mm as it's easier to read! Also my wrist isn't exactly small. I would love to see one of these with faux patina lume!

Not a fan of Steinhart, quite like this one but bit of a daft decision to make it 42 rather than 39! Not a bad price tho. Agree with your opinion on homages, tho not a fan of companies who just churn out other people's designs.... Prefer original manufacturer reissues. Cheers 👍🏻

A smaller size and this would fly off the shelves. Things are going in this direction finally. Steinhart do have some Ocean Vintage 39mm just not in this design......yet. I've a 6½ to 6¾" wrist and as an aside I'd really like to try the new Sinn U50 as I've always loved the marmite U1 styling.

It's a SUPER HOMAGE. Iove it, i cant take it off. You get all the great 1655 vintage looks with a modern size with out the high cost of vintage. It's a "standard" GMT not a "true" "travelers" GMT. It does the same thing just not in the same easy way. It's not a deal breaker.

Homages?I have loads of them,most of which I bought not knowing they were homage watches.I use my eyes and if i like the design and i can afford it,i buy it.The Steinhart is ok but at this price i would expect a colour matched date wheel.There are far to many manufacturers who seem to think its perfectly ok to destroy the dial design by just chucking a white date wheel on a watch that is screaming out for a different colour...........
