STEN MAG REPAIR, How to adjust feed lips and fix other issues

In this video I describe how to use the original British special tools to adjust and repair the feed lips and magazine bodies on STEN gun magazines.
These adjustments are needed to remediate various failure to feed, failure to eject and other issues.
I'll apologize now for the out of focus shots. I'm using an older GoPro and need to get a better camera for this type of filming

I worked out the misfeeding was a mag issue, but I couldn't see the problem. Now I know what I need to do. Thanks for posting.

You want the bullets at 7.5 to 8' degrees of presentation. You want the gap at the rear of the mag feed lips top opening to be 0.330' and the front of the mag feed lips top should be 0.366', so it widens as the bullet is push froward into battery, leaving the magazine.

Can you post the demensions of the sten mag mandrel....? No one out there carries this tool any longer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. I have similar problems with 32 ACP Zastava pistol. They made the pistol in 380 also and I think my 7.65 magazines were used/adjusted for 380. Lots of feeding issues. New mag springs were so long they wouldn’t feed at all too much pressure. I haven’t found any specs for mags or springs.

That mag tool set has had a huge price increase since you bought it. Clean $575 rusty and pitted $450. The gauge is $225 clean and $145 rusty and pitted.

Great video. A lot of very useful info. I'll be watching this several times as I study. A well respected authority on the Sten stated that the feed lips should be parallel. Do you agree? Also what is the diameter of the punches you used to create the ridge? Again great presentation. Exactly what I need.

The feed lips are actually not parallel. They flare out slightly to the front of the magazine. They should spread out at the same angle on either side however. As far as the diameter of the punch I was using I believe it was a 1/4" major diameter. You could use any 1/4" diameter rod stock.

Thank you. Unfortunately the magazine repair tools have always been difficult to locate. The best way to find them at this point in time will be to post "want to buy" ads on all of the various MG owners forums and periodically check back. Also unfortunately I would expect these tools to go for a relativly high price when found. I think when I bought mine back in the early 2010s they were over a hundred bucks. I don't know of any blue prints out there either unfortunately and I have since sold off my set of tools. Sorry to have to give the disappointing news.

I lucked into both tools. I took them to a machinist friend and we made some measurements of the mandrel. Later I actually sent mine, on loan, to a more knowledgeable person in a machine gun group who took it to his machinest and got accurate measurements. Do a Google search for "Sten Magazine Tool" and you can likely find him. One caveat, there are some rather complicated angles and, I'm guessing, special tooling will be necessary. Good luck.
