In this video I am building Tamiya's Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden in 1:48 scale. This is an older release, with a combination of raised and recessed panel lines. The kit is cheap, so I had no issues experimenting with new techniques and the fit was good enough.
I am using Revell Aqua Color and Ammo Mig acrylic paints thinned with Revell Color Mix Thinner. The mixture of the paints was done by eye, so I don't have exact ratios. Airbrush is a cheap, no-name one.
Hope to see you soon for another video.

There are a lot of modelling-reports here on youtube, and in doing so almost everyone follows the same pattern. It's always funny to see that a lot of effort is done in painting and weathering, but obvious faults of the kit are ignored. In this case the wheel wells for instance are too shallow...

Just started building this kit. I took a 40 year hiatus from modeling and your video has inspired my to detail the cockpit similar to yours.

Excellent job. I really like those older Tamiya kits like that, the Frank, and the Buffalo for beginning modelers. They are simple, not too expensive, and go together well...

Hi, Fernando. Here's another tip: don't cut off the ends of the gear legs. The square ends are supposed to go in the square holes in the wheel wells. My gear is shorter than normal cause i didn't pay attention. Happy modelling and thanks for watching. 👍

interesting I got this kit as well. I wonder why the 70's ones are still around. they're cool planes. I'm painting with brushes though. I figured I got the green from my zero so why not start on it.

Oh wait, before I got any farther, I thought cockpits and all interior were a green blue color for Japans aircraft? ** nevermind, I googled it and it varies, and what I was thinking of is rustproofing called aotake.****
@SpruesToScale
@SpruesToScale 3 года назад
Hey Chris, I know what you are saying. I did that on the wheel wells and covers. The instructions say the cockpit should be painted with this aotake, but all references that I found led me to believe it was green. Not that I am a huge stickler for extreme accuracy. Thanks for watching. :)
@kevinnazario1015
@kevinnazario1015 3 года назад
Aotake was use for cockpits sometimes if there was a shortage of the proper paint color. It shows up in many different japanese planes from different companies. Actually is not paint but a rust preventer.

What airbrush are you using/what airbrushes do you recommend? I really enjoy modeling but I tried and I suck at brush painting. Also, great build!
@SpruesToScale
@SpruesToScale 2 года назад
Hey Andrej. I'm using an airbrush similar to this: www.airbrush-fengda.co.uk/en_US/p/Airbrush-set-Fengda-BD-130K/1051 I can't make recomendations-i haven't used many airbrushes- but i guess the more money you spend the better the equipment. For brush painting I found that Revell Aqua paint is the best. Thanks for the comment. 👍

Why is everyone over weathering everything? The only place you would see a plane that thrashed would be one that crashed into the jungle and was only found recently. I would imagine the Japanese painting and waxing their planes every week. You would honor your enemy by killing him with a clean well maintained weapon. If you were shot down, you would know that even if you were a shitty pilot, you were an excellent painter.

You have dishonoured my Father who was a Japanese imperial aircraft weathering corporal. He died in action at the battle of Ittcchyfannyi in 1944. Assigned to the Divine wind 101st kamikaze division, he flew 4 successful kamikaze missions, but alas on his final mission he died when ejected from his plane , where landed in a barrel of finishing paint.

Your radio is still too small, a long range voice radio in the 1940s were the size of a steamer trunk, 15 cubic feet. You can buy a ride in a P51 Mustang and that is where you sit, in the old radio compartment and it is quite roomy if you are short. Not even the Japanese could build a radio that small during WW2.
@SpruesToScale
@SpruesToScale 3 года назад
Lucky for me the war is over. :) The actual radio on the model was even smaller and one of the marking options has you remove it completely. As for the weathering, i usually don't go that far but i wanted to experiment with hairspray chipping and got carried away. I had fun tho and fun is good to have. Thanks for watching.
